Though this rarely happens – a store is opening earlier than expected! The Allen Edmonds shoe store coming next to the already open Tumi luggage store opens tomorrow. Hours will be M-Sat 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-6pm.

Last month we learned that the Benetton next G-Star clothing in north Dupont was closing. @scottjmedway tweets us the news of who will be taking over the space:
“Spoke to employees at Bennetton closing in #Dupont – store will re-open in a few weeks as Emporium DNA, a high end clothing store.”

I remember when folks used to bust my chops for calling corner stores bodegas. I feel vindicated!! Though technically this Bodega is also called ‘Bodega Market’ covering all their bases:

I was just curious if you had any idea what is being built on 13th and Florida NE. It looks like it could be commerical on the bottom floor, but I’m not quite sure. They are definitely moving quickly on the renovations, though.”
I spoke with some workers last weekend who said there could be plans for a restaurant or corner store but they weren’t 100% sure. Stay tuned.
675 H Street, NW
This was the former planned second location for a Yo Sushi. Sports Zone Elite will be located right next to Panera by the Chinatown Arch across the street from the metro.
1425 H Street, NE
When looking into the new sports bar coming to H Street, I learned some sad news for next door neighbor Mike’s Thrift Store. The building is for lease. The owner tells me that he will remain open until it does. The owner is super nice – so if there any thrifters out there – there’s still time to show him some love.
1919 14th Street, NW
When we talked about the new Harper Building leasing on 14th between T and Wallach Pl, NW – some folks were asking about retail. In addition to a Universal Gear move, I just spotted a sign for a Georgetown Optician. Their website says:
“Our latest location will offer a new and exciting shopping experience with the same attentive and personal service you’ve come to expect from Georgetown Optician. Located right in the heart of the bustling 14th Street corridor, our new location will be easily accessible from the U Street Metro stop, as well as a short walk from Logan Circle and Columbia Heights. Our location will host an onsite lab as well as full collections of many of our most popular brands as well as a few new exclusive brands making their debut in Washington DC”

“District Clay, a new 2,000 square foot ceramic studio, has opened in the District and is offering a wide range of ceramic and pottery classes, including classes for adults and kids. This is the first new ceramic studio that offers classes to open in the District in 20 years.
Classes at District Clay include basic to advanced wheel throwing, ceramic sculpture and ceramic tile and will be held during the day, on week nights and weekends. A full schedule of classes can be found at www.districtclay.com.
In celebration of its grand opening, students can get a 20 percent discount for classes during February.
The owner of the studio, Cass Johnson, said, “District Clay is designed to be a new creative cauldron for clay and ceramic enthusiasts in the Washington DC area. The studio significantly expands the ceramic offerings for residents in the District and outlying areas. “
Johnson noted that “Class sizes will be no more than 13 students at a time in order to keep instructions levels high. Students will be encouraged to branch out into new directions while learning the fundamentals of ceramic craft.”
Johnson said District Clay was also launching an Artist in Residence program for advanced ceramic artists which would give them full time access to the studio. The studio also includes a Work/Study program for students who wish to work in the studio in exchange for class time. Finally, the studio will offer Master Classes by visiting potters and ceramic artists.
The studio is located in a quiet residential neighborhood near Brookland in a renovated warehouse for artisans calledOff the Beaten Track and offers on-site parking. With the studio on the second floor, students will work in a sun-drenched space with large windows on three sides. The warehouse, at 2414 Douglas Ave NE, also includes metal workers, wood workers, photographers, a florist, fine art painters, a coffee roaster and a large vintage furniture store (not yet open).
The studio includes gas and electric kilns, 14 wheels, a pugmill, slab roller, glaze spray booth and an extruder as well a gallery for students to sell their works.”
The Iceberry is going to become a Little Penguin “Fresh and Frozen Yogurt” at the corner of 30th and M St, NW.
