From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Vincent C. Gray today announced the signing of the lease for Walmart at the Skyland Town Center at the intersection of Good Hope Road, Naylor Road, and Alabama Avenue SE in Ward 7. The lease signing secures the nation’s largest retailer to anchor the long-awaited project that also will feature neighborhood retailers, restaurants and residential units.

“I want to thank our development partners, Rappaport and W.C. Smith, as well as Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Jeff Miller for working tirelessly to ensure this final piece needed to begin construction of Skyland Town Center was completed,” said Mayor Gray. “I am delighted that Walmart has committed to opening a store in a neighborhood that has been underserved for too long.”

More than a decade ago, the District embarked on a path to acquire and revitalize the blighted Skyland Shopping Center, which for years was poorly operated and never met the retail needs of the residents of Wards 7 and 8. With more than 40 parcels to acquire spread out over 15 different property owners and 29 different tenants, residents had little luck with their efforts to coordinate redevelopment of the shopping center on their own.

In 2002, the District, through the National Capital Revitalization Corporation, intervened and began its acquisition of the Skyland site. The Gray Administration worked to clear all legal issues and resolve all tenant-relocation concerns. Mayor Gray, city officials and members of the development teams held a ceremonial groundbreaking event at Skyland to highlight the start of construction work in March. To date, more than 90 percent of the site has been demolished. The District has invested approximately $40 million in the project for the purposes of acquisition, tenant relocation, property management and legal fees.”

From a press release:

“After 10 years at its current location, neighborhood staple Glover Park Hardware is closing its doors on Wisconsin Avenue. The store’s official last day of business at its current location is scheduled for January 15, 2015.

Glover Park Hardware opened in 2005, the second of nine Ace Hardware stores opened in DC and Baltimore by A Few Cool Hardware Stores’ owners Gina Schaefer and Marc Friedman. The owners decided to relocate the store when they were unable to renegotiate the lease, which expires at the end of the year. “We have really enjoyed our spot in Glover Park but it’s time for us to move. We love our Glover Park Community and are committed to reopening in this neighborhood,” says Schaefer.

The company is actively looking for a new location for Glover Park Hardware and hopes to find a storefront where they can expand to meet the needs of their customers. Updates regarding the store’s move will be posted on their website at www.acehardwaredc.com, and will also be sent out periodically via email and social media. To stay informed on the store’s move and relocation, please contact us via email at [email protected].”

Following news of Arc’teryx’s Grand Opening this weekend comes more CityCenter news – RareSweets is located in one of the ‘alley’ shops between H and I near where the new Hermes is coming:

From a press release:

“RareSweets?, a bakeshop and specialty dessert company, will open for business on Monday, December 15th at 8:00 a.m. at 963 Palmer Alley, NW, Washington, DC 20001 located in downtown’s CityCenterDC development. After over a year of operating a wholesale and catering business out of the food incubator Union Kitchen, and hosting various pop-ups, RareSweets’ founder and pastry chef Meredith Tomason will open her first brick-and-mortar bakeshop. The menu will offer seasonally driven layer cakes, doughnuts, coffee cakes, mini bundts, cookies, bars, biscuits, ice creams, and other heirloom American confections reimagined for a modern palate.

Tomason, who has held high-profile pastry roles in New York such as pastry chef at Tom Colicchio’s lauded Craft Restaurant, and stints at Tribeca Treats and the famed Magnolia Bakery, was inspired to open RareSweets by her late grandmother, an avid baker, through whom Tomason slowly learned the treasure trove of family recipes dating back several generations. Family recipes for gingersnap cookies and cocoa crinkles have earned a spot on RareSweets’ opening menu, which also features recipes inspired by Tomason’s vast vintage cookbook collection—some dating back to the 1850s.

Tomason has an affinity for fruit forward desserts, and enjoys creating unexpected textures and flavors, relying on raw sugar, nutmeg, and flower essences such as lavender and orange blossom to brighten berries and other fresh flavors. Customers can anticipate an arsenal of classic flavors that remain throughout the year, as well as an evolving array of seasonal flavors, which will showcase produce at the peak of their season.

On opening day, the first 100 people in line will receive a complimentary hot cocoa with purchase, limited to one per person. Initially, operating hours will be from 7am – 7pm, seven days a week. The opening menu is below: (more…)
