Thanks to a reader for sending the word. The new place will be located at 1112 1110 H Street, NE. We talked about Jin, located at 2017 14th St, NW near Busboys & Poets, here. Not sure when the H St location will open but the reader sent in an old liquor application license which was posted in Nov. ’09:

It said:

“New restaurant featuring Asian cuisine and a summer garden with 25 seats. Request an entertainment endorsement to feature live bands, DJ, and Karaoke with no designated dance floor. Occupancy load of 99.”

Kababji is located at 1351 Connecticut Ave. NW. Now that they’ve been open for a bit I thought we could some initial impressions. Their Web site says:

“The vision emphasizes on product freshness, healthy cooking. Food served fast is not to be confused with fast food, for the main distinction is that our food is entirely prepared from fresh ingredients, Kabab-ji goes the extra mile to bring you fresh quality food that taste great every time.

Our history is that of a traditional Lebanese / Mediterranean menu evolving to an open grill in a contemporary design. In short , it is the essence and value of the past served in a modern dish.”

You can see their menus here. Any fans?

I know folks were eager to meet the El Floridan Cuban Food Truck. I’m happy to report that you will be able to do so soon. But you have to get a bit lucky as the locations for the soft opening will not be announced in advance. I’m told they, “will be rolling around watching for people flagging me down”. However starting Monday 5/24 they’ll be up and running for real kicking off near 18th and M Streets, NW.

They can be followed on twitter here @FLmeetsDC

While I was following up on the new Wok and Roll Restaurant location on 18th Street, NW I happened to notice that the door to the old Caribou Coffee spot (across the street) was open. I walked inside and spoke to the new renters – Uptowner Cafe.

If the name sounds familiar it’s because they have a few locations around town including the relatively recently opened spot on 14th St, NW in the Tivoli Complex in Columbia Heights. I have to admit I’m a fan of the Columbia Heights location (they have Dr. Brown’s soda!).

They plan on opening up this Friday. Think they’ll make a nice addition to 18th Street?

Twitter user AliMcSherry spotted the good news earlier on Tues. Wok and Roll’s Web site says a new location is coming soon to 2400 18 St. NW (at Belmont). I took a look late Tues. afternoon and a lot of work was going on (though it didn’t look like the opening was imminent). This is the old Prince Cafe/ House of Kabob (and Hookah) spot. Over the past months, the entire building has been renovated.

Wok and Roll has a current location at 604 H St, NW in Chinatown. We judged that location here. I’ll be sure to update when an opening date is announced for the Adams Morgan location.

Every time I walk past the Whole Foods on P St, NW (b/w 14th and 15th) the tables inside and outside seemed to be full of folks eating lunch. So what’s the story here – is the food that good? Are the prices that good? Is it just really convenient with a plentiful selection of seating? Or is it some combination of the above?

For the fans, any must order items?

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any information about Chix moving to the corner of 13th and U? A sign went up the other day (next to the Georgetown Valet sign). Seems like a better use of that corner than just another dry cleaners. I’m assuming Chix is moving, not adding a second location, but figured you’d have the inside scoop!”

No, Chix is staying at 2019 11th Street, NW. I checked in with the owners and it turns out they simply saw an opportunity to advertise in an area with high foot traffic (13th and U). As far as I know the building being renovated at 13th and U Streets, NW will host Georgetown Valet and Boundless Yoga. I’ll be sure to update if/when more tenants are signed.

Thanks to all who sent emails (sorry I didn’t get back to everyone I was at a wedding out of town). But ever since we last discussed IHOP coming to Columbia Heights in the DCUSA, I’ve been getting regular emails from folks asking if it was still happening. Last week a simple tweet from @dcjobscouncil said:

“New IHOP coming to Columbia Heights _ with 110 new jobs.”

And with that we can continue the celebration or the mourning period depending on your perspective. I see an IHOP coming to Columbia Heights kinda like the establishment of the State of Israel, some people (the Jews) celebrate independence day and some people (the Palestinians) call the same day the Nakba, the catastrophe.

Will you celebrate or weep?

Haydee’s located at 3102 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW has applied for sidewalk seating. I say the more outdoor seating the better.

And I just wanted to give props to some new signage from the Dons that has sprouted up (relatively) recently: (more…)
