Island Jim’s is located next to Colonel Brooks at 901 Monroe St NE in Brookland. I was surprised to see them open last Friday (I think they close during the winter). Is this a fun place to eat crabs? Any fans?

Wow, that was fast – Ketcha Fire BBQ had just opened up in July at 928 U St, NW. Last night Jamaican Joe’s had some grand opening festivities. You can see their menu here. We’ll revisit after a bit for a proper judging.
As for the tagline – wanna get jerked? – no comment…

I’m happy to finally be able to share an update since the groundbreaking took place over a year and a half ago. We’ve got some serious progress! I was super psyched to a new permit go up on the front window:

A Demolition permit had been up for a while and while major demolition was accomplished we can now see a Building permit posted which is when the real build out takes place. Every time I walk by the space at 3813 Georgia Ave, NW (just north of the metro) I hear work going on. It seems like a late Autumn/early Winter opening isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
And another sign of more good news is that ANC rep Robert Mandle says that they’ve applied for an ABRA alcohol license which will likely be on the ANC’s September agenda (which is when you can show your support if you’d like, I’ll send a reminder at that time.)
Sweet!
For those not familiar with the project from the folks behind Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd and more you can read some background info here.

From a press release:
“The new Prosciutto Bar at restaurant La Tomate happily offers a therapeutic variety of cured pork from around the Mediterranean, all cut with an Italian artisanal hand-slicer. And when diners order from the Prosciutto Bar during La Tomate’s anniversary month of August, the restaurant will treat them to a complimentary glass of select Italian wine or beer.
La Tomate is the familiar wedge-shaped Italian bistro located at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and 20th Street, NW above Dupont Circle. On August 17, the bistro commemorates its 24th anniversary as a neighborhood staple, and is offering the celebratory drink to thank loyal customers and meet its new neighbors. The Prosciutto Bar is the only one of its kind in Washington, D.C.
The Prosciutto Bar menu reads like the ingredient list from a picnic in the Tuscan countryside: Parma Prosciutto, Prosciutto San Daniele of Fruili, Smoked prosciutto from Alto Adige, buffalo mozzarella, fontina, motasio, pumpernickel, cerignola olives, pickles, fruit preserves, honey… Plates can be shared or eaten individually – from the Salumi e Formaggi, a wooden cutting board strewn with a generous assortment of meats and cheeses, crusty bread, and olive oil – to the rolled meat and cheese Rotoli or the Prosciutto sliders. The Prosciutto Bar was recently built at La Tomate as part of restaurant renovations.”
La Tomate is located at 1701 Connecticut Ave, NW.

Back in March ’11 we learned that Lola’s would be expanding into the second floor at 711 8th St, SE on Barracks Row. Now that it’s open I thought we’d do a proper judging. You can see their food and drink menu here. Any fans?

Last Saturday, Bloomingdale hosted their Third Annual Art Walk (which was awesome) and I ran into the owners of Boundary Stone. We last noted that construction had started at their space at 116 Rhode Island Avenue, NW. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the space (and while it’s not quite photo ready) you can really see it starting to come together. One photo I begged to take – and finally wore them down – is the great tin ceiling:

Another super super cool feature is that they got their electrician to hook up the big Sylvan sign out front. They have a switch in the bar so whenever you see the Sylvan sign lit you’ll know the bar is open.

Speaking of when the bar is open – while I couldn’t get an exact date – I was able to get “definitely in Autumn 2011”.
And more good news – here’s a sneak peek at part of the menu:
Sound good?
And for beers they’ll have cans and drafts. You’ll be able to get a $3 can of Bud, a $7 20 oz Guinness and lots of others including from the 21st Amendment Brewery, DC Brau, Brooklyn Lager and many many more. Not to mention all of the whiskeys they’ll have…
Stay tuned.
In the meantime you can stay updated by following them on twitter @BoundaryStoneDC and checking their facebook page here.

Their farewell message:
“It is with great gratitude and pleasure to announce the retirement of Thai Kingdom Restaurant and Bar. This being our twenty fifth year in Washington DC, we thought there would be no better time to say our goodbyes then the present. We thank all our loyal patrons that have made it possible for us to have been here for so long. Thank You for sharing your special moments with us, and allowing us to have so many fond memories to take away. We invite all patrons to celebrate with us before we close our doors for good on August 5th 2011.”

Friends Kabob is located at 1195 20th St NW. Their Web site says:
“At Friends Kabob you will enjoy delicious international cuisine, served in a family friendly environment. Authentic food cooked daily, fresh tandoori bread baked in our traditional clay oven. All of our dishes are prepared to order, using only the finest fresh ingredients.”
You can see their menu here.

Back in May ’11 we learned that Sandella’s had been evicted from 1911 Eye St, NW. I was excited to see a coming soon sign on the space for BONMi – Banh Mi sandwiches. Their Web site says they’ll be opening in September.
Sweet.

From an email:
“We are opening a new restaurant on 1612 14th St, NW called Pearl Dive Oyster Palace with a bar on the top floor named Black Jack. We have been getting a lot of request for reservations and to see the place. So in trying to accommodate these request we have decided to have a charity fundraiser for the Washington Nationals Diabetes Care Complex. We are hoping the neighbors will come out and help us support this worthy cause.”
