A new bistro is coming to 3236 Prospect Street, NW. According to a recent liquor license application, it will be a:

“Contemporary bistro serving Italian food and cuisine, including salads and desserts. No Entertainment provided. Sidewalk Cafe with 50 seats. Seating capacity is 120. Total occupancy load is 140.”

Looks like a significant build out will need to happen first so stay tuned for an opening date.

“Dear PoPville,

I am working on a combination Carry Out / Communal Kitchen on Georgia Avenue a few blocks north of the Petworth Metro station and I would be curious to hear what your readers think would be a good cuisine for that area. (Also would be happy to hear from folks who are looking to rent commercial kitchen space for their food trucks, catering company, etc.)

Sincerely,

Future Petworth Carry Out”

I’m gonna take first crack here. And I think I’ll at least echo a few other voices because it seems to come up at least once a week – a good Jewish Deli carryout. Pastrami, corned beef etc.

What would you guys like to see?

Ed. Note: The writer of this note is the real deal. Whichever cuisine is selected I guarantee we will be doing back flips and shedding more tears of joy.

Filomena is located at 1063 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Their Web site says:

“JoAnna transported some of her mother’s furniture to the restaurant and set up a dining room (our Filomena Kitchen) that looked similar to Mother Filomena’s dining rooms over the years, dominated by the large heavy oak table, carved matching chairs and a large intricate sculpted Murano glass grape chandelier.

JoAnna also brought tons of her Mother’s antiques and knick-knacks to give the restaurant her Mother’s style. The music chosen for the restaurant was the type of Italian street songs Antimo liked to play on the Concertina in his youth or listened to because they reminded him of his boyhood home in Abruzzi, Italy.

Filomena, whose family also originated from the Abruzzi region of Italy, was a great cook. She had grown up learning very traditional Italian cooking, but found that sometimes it was very difficult to find many of the traditional ingredients. Being very creative, Filomena adapted many of her recipes to use what was available to her. Many of the original items that JoAnna chose to put on her menu were inspired by Mother Filomena’s simple, yet creative cuisine, as well as those wonderful old world traditional recipes—some that were prepared for the daily meal, for Sunday dinner, or when company called, or for specific holidays.”

You can see their menus here. For the fans – any must order items?

Smoke and Barrel is the new Craft beer, bourbon and BBQ joint opening up above Asylum at 2471 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan. When we last checked in on them in late Aug. they were still finishing the renovations and finalizing the menu. Well, the renovations have now been completed and some folks who remember what the space used to look like will think they are hallucinating. Contractor Joe Wood did an amazing job with the bar.

They will be having their grand opening on Tuesday. Lots of photos including a look at their menus after the jump. I know there are tons of bbq fans so we’ll def. revisit to see what you guys think of the food.

Ed. Note: Asylum and Smoke & Barrel are owned by the same folks who own Meridian Pint (primarily John Andrade) and is a PoP advertiser.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Avenue Cafe is located at 1501 Rhode Island Avenue NW and is part of the Holiday Inn. I can’t imagine this would be too many people’s first choice for the Logan area but I’m just curious if anyone has stopped by to try out the BBQ menu?

This one actually first caught my attention because I thought it was advertising a happy hour at the breakfast buffet starting at 6:30am. Reading comprehension has never been my greatest strength…

This is gonna be freaking awesome. From a liquor license application:

“This is a tavern that has a ramen shop on the ground level. Diners will be able to order bowls with a variety of fresh toppings. The second level will serve as a bar & restaurant with a Japanese menu.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 3 am Friday and Saturday 11 am – 4 am”

Washingtonian has some good details:

“On the ground level, there’ll be a ramen shop inspired by those in Sapporo, one of the Japanese cities famous for the dish. Utagawa will serve three styles of the broth-based soup: miso, soy-sauce-anchored shoyu, and shio or salt—which has a pale color and more-delicate flavor.

Another traditional touch: The ramen shop will be meant for slurping noodles not sipping drinks. “Eating ramen isn’t a very social thing,” says Utagawa. “You look at your bowl and eat, otherwise the noodles get soggy.” For socializing, diners can head upstairs to the izakaya, which will serve as both bar and restaurant.”

Daikaya will be located right next to the super popular Graffiato at 705 6th St, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

About a week ago there was a fire at Corado’s in Mt. Pleasant that closed the store. Do you have any new information since the fire?”

This fire happened when I was away on vacation but I spoke with some folks on the block who said that Corado’s is planning on reopening. Though it is not likely that will happen before 3-4 months. Anyone else hear of their plans?

We judged Corado’s, located at 3217 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW, back in Jan. ’10.
