Lost Society opened up back in June ’11 at the corner of 14th and U St, NW. You can see their menus here. So I’m curious what folks think of this spot all around. In addition to dinner has anyone checked it out for brunch? What do you think of it just as a spot to get a drink?

I was able to get a preview of the new Tortilla Coast coming to 15th and P St, NW in Logan Circle. Hard to believe it used to be a paint store. Also note, when the warm weather comes back they’re going to have some sweet outdoor seating on the 15th Street side.

The hope to open to the public in the next couple of weeks and a press release gives more details:

Tortilla Coast will open a second location at 1460 P Street NW, near Logan Circle, in mid-December. While the new restaurant will offer the same fun atmosphere and focus on freshly made food that guests have come to expect at the original Capitol Hill location, the Logan Circle restaurant will feature authentic regional Mexican cuisine.

The menu at the Logan Circle location embraces the unique ingredients and culinary styles of the Yucatan, Puebla, Veracruz, and Baja regions. Offering lunch, dinner and weekend brunch dishes, the menu is highlighted by fresh, house-made tortillas, salsas, guacamole and sauces. Signature dishes include Lomito con Mole Negro Oaxaqueño, an adobo marinated grilled pork tenderloin, Tilapia a la Veracruzana, pan seared tilapia in a rustic lemon caper sauce, and Mama’s Enchiladas, stuffed with pulled chicken Mexicana in a ranchera and tomatillo salsa. Traditional favorites like ceviches, tacos, and fajitas will also be offered.

Building on Tortilla Coast’s tradition of great drinks, the Logan Circle location will serve up an eclectic selection of handcrafted cocktails, and a superb mix of Mexican beers and Spanish and South American wines. Margaritas made to order with fresh juices and organic nectars pair with any one of Tortilla Coast’s 99 tequilas and mezcals. Standouts include prickly pear, available on the rocks or frozen, blood orange or white peach. “Micheladas,” refreshing traditional Mexican beer cocktails, are served two ways: “Chelita,” with Modelo Especial, fresh lime and a salted rim, or “La Sangrita,” with Negro Modelo, house-made sangrita and a salted rim.

The restaurant boasts 152 seats (including 45 in the bar area) and, come spring, will feature a 48 seat patio on 15th Street NW. The décor is vibrant and fun, anchored by a 30 foot mural of Mexican street art collected by local designer Walter Gagliano.

Tortilla Coast Logan Circle will be open for dining Monday-Thursday 11:30am–11 pm, Friday 11:30am–midnight, Saturday 10am- midnight and Sunday 10am-10pm. Brunch on Saturday and Sunday will be served from 10am – 3pm.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Back in August ’11 we pre-Preview of Mintwood Place coming to 1813 Columbia Rd, NW below Perry’s in Adams Morgan. I stopped by this weekend to see how it was progressing. I was lucky enough to run into the owner, Saied Ayoubi Azali, who invited me inside to take a few photos. There are still some finishing touches ongoing but they are fairly confident that they’ll be open by the end of the month.

I don’t think the photos do it justice because I was trying to avoid the construction but the reclaimed materials were looking awesome:

Saied was also very psyched about their wood burning oven:

This is def. one of my top three places I can’t wait to open (the other two are Chez Billy’s in Petworth and the Tryst/Diner spot coming to Columbia Heights.)

From a press release:

The District’s first traveling restaurant opens in Georgetown December 13th through 17th

Uncurbed is a traveling restaurant that brings the enjoyment of the food truck experience off the curb and into various vacant spaces. The first Uncurbed DC will feature a BBQ Bus Holiday House Party in a vacant second-story space at 2805 M Street NW.

Jeff Kelley of Wonky Promotions explains, “Uncurbed was born out of a desire to bring vibrancy to vacant spaces through a combination of great food, local art, and lively entertainment. By joining forces with food trucks to cater food service at these events, we are partnering with
people who care deeply about engaging their customers in meaningful and innovative ways. Che and Tadd at BBQ Bus epitomize this thoughtful approach.”

The restaurant will feature a menu of smoked ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and other BBQ and comfort food classics regularly served by the BBQ Bus food truck.

“We opened BBQ Bus because we love cooking and sharing good times with family and friends,” said BBQ Bus Chef and owner Tadd Ruddell-Tabisola. “Uncurbed gives us the opportunity to share those passions with guests in a relaxed, house-party environment.” Uncurbed is a production by Wonky Promotions and verdeHOUSE, a DC based company that activates vacant space with temporary users.

Toki Underground located above the Pug at 1234 H St, NE probably has gotten the most positive buzz for any new restaurant that I can remember. You can see their menus here. So is the food as good as the buzz? If so, what are the must order items?

Whoa, have you walked by the old Borders bookstore at 14th and F St, NW lately? The huge windows are not covered and reveal the much anticipated Hamilton (to be open 24/7 with an 800 person capacity) from the Clyde’s group:

Founding father, mover, shaker, lover & dueling politico, Alexander Hamilton’s vision for America helped it to become the world’s venue for opportunity and success.

Washington DC’s newest destination for music and entertainment is dedicated to celebrating the talent and passion of America’s best artists. DC is a city where polish and sophistication have been charmed by a bohemian spirit creating a new thriving artistic underground.

The Hamilton will offer local, national and international musicians the unique opportunity to entertain a city that is never short on opinions, all within earshot of The White House.

Check out the renderings of the music space here.

And here’s a glimpse from street level:

Dear PoPville,

I live in Logan and every weekday, I walk by a new restaurant called Tortino on my way home–it’s on 11st St NW, between M and N, on the west side of the street. For the past few months they’ve been getting it ready and it appears to have opened for business in the last week or so, but I can’t find anyone talking about it on the internets. It’s a small, Italian restaurant. Any intel on who is behind it, any info about whether the food is any good, etc?

I stopped in to the new space as yesterday (thanks to all who wrote in) and I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but once you step inside, you’ll see that they did an amazing job. It’s two spaces combined. And the menu looks great too. You can see it here.

They’ve been open a couple of weeks but will be having their Grand Opening celebration on New Years Eve:

I’ve been wondering for a long time what would become of this prime vacant retail space at the corner of 15th and K St, NW across from McPherson Square. I finally ran into some folks working on the space and it’s gonna be a Pret a Manger. They’re also on a bit of a tear – they have one location at 11th and F St, NW; 1825 Eye Street, NW; 1828 L St, NW; and are also coming to Union Station soon. And now they have 15th and K St, NW listed as ‘Coming Soon’ officially on their Web site.

I just spotted the Dorothy Moon food truck on Sat. at Farragut Square. Looks like they just launched. From their Facebook page:
