Back in April 2011 we learned that a Chipotle hoped to move into the former Cereal Bowl space (and Starbucks before that) at 3420 Connecticut Ave, NW next to the Uptown Theater. Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up that it’s official.

I’ve never seen an outpouring of support like this:

The Lord of Petworth, has called Bill’s Seafood Kitchen, located at 3601 Georgia Ave. NW, his greatest DC secret. Over the new year holiday while I was away on vacation – I had heard reports that there was a shooting late one night in front of the store. While the shooting in and of itself is horrible, I’d say this just adds insult to injury. And I certainly don’t mean to belittle the actual shooting but this storefront is def. iconic. I was walking by this weekend and there is clear evidence of a shooting (nevermind the ridiculousness of a bullet hole in front of a Washington Ballet flier):

And on closer inspection I saw that the whole glass pane is cracked:

I don’t really have much more to say about this, except it is very sad all around and I hope the glass can be repaired.

Exec. chef David Ashwell has left Le Zinc to raise his growing family (second son just born) in wife Kirsty’s native Northern Ireland in a small town outside Belfast. We wish David well in his new life and thank him for his considerable contributions to our successful launch last July.
Joining Le Zinc this week as its new executive chef is Janis McLean, who for the last three years was the exec. chef at 15ria. Prior to that, Janis was the exec. chef at the Morrison Clark Inn restaurants and also served in the same capacity at redDog Cafe and Red Sage.
McLean received her training at L’Academie de Cuisine, followed by five years at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Burgundy, France, where she taught classes and eventually became director of U.S operations. She is a member of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, Les Dames d’Escoffier and the American Institute of Wine and Food.
We are very happy to have Janis come aboard and look forward to a promising future.
New changes coming next week. Janis is going to do a red wine-braised duck leg salad on hearty greens with a port vinaigrette; rabbit with prunes; whole roasted trout, and a lot more lunchtime salads and a daily quiche.
Bistro Le Zinc is located at 3714 Macomb St. NW (just of Wisconsin Ave.)

You can see their menus here. Any fans?

Dear PoPville,
I have seen people cooking and cleaning at shaws tavern and update on them?
Back in mid-Dec. we learned of the new owners taking over the space.
Since that time they have applied for a new liquor license which says the new Shaw’s Tavern will be a:
“New Tavern. Gastro pub style American food, gourmet coffee and deserts. Jazz and Classical music as live entertainment. Occupancy load is 260. Sidewalk Café has 35 seats.”
In early Jan. Eater DC did an interview which revealed some interesting details:
First of all, it’s going to be a casual place. It’s not going to be fine dining. With the setup and everything it would be hard to go that way. You will see a lot of microbreweries still here and a lot of wine and also cocktails. Cocktails may be a little focused on American liquors and brands. Beers are mostly going to be microbreweries from the US, a lot of them from around here. And then back of the house, obviously, is all his.
The only change I did to the space is I got rid of some of those couches and I ordered some more of those high-tables that we have so that people have more tables to sit and actually eat. The only thing is they have leased the whole building now and the upstairs is commercial, so we’re thinking to expand upstairs in the near future. It’s going to be private dining.
And then we’re planning to hopefully add a rooftop deck as well.
Shaw’s Tavern is located at 520 Florida Ave, NW. I will update when an exact opening date is announced.

Back in Sept. ’10 we learned that Pho 14, was expanding at 1436 Park Rd, NW and in May ’11 we also learned their menu would be expanding. So I’m just curious – why do you think they don’t have a liquor license yet? Do you think they should get one?
From a press release:
This January, owners and husband and wife team Phillip Blane and Laura Schiller plan to open their first restaurant, Unum, in Georgetown at 2917 M St. NW in the former Mendocino Grille location. The intimate and contemporary 50-seat neighborhood restaurant will offer new American cuisine in a warm and dynamic space that also includes a 12-seat bar.
Blane will also serve as Executive Chef of Unum, creating a menu that marries his East Coast cooking experiences with his international travels. After growing up in New York City and London, Blane spent a decade in healthcare administration before following his passion to become a full-time chef. Having worked as the opening Chef at The Charlotte Hotel and Restaurant on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, as well as most recently as Sous Chef at Equinox restaurant under Chef Todd Gray, Chef Blane is looking forward to offering guests at Unum a range of approachable dishes with a contemporary spin.
To that end, guests will enjoy smaller plates such as Grilled quail with sautéed greens, pistachio nuts and a date sauce and a Four onion soup with slow roasted Spanish onions, crispy shallots, caramelized Cipollinis and fresh chives. Larger plates will include Smoked duck breast served with rainbow Swiss chard and pomegranate sauce; Rosemary gnocchi with oyster mushrooms, butternut squash, cranberries and truffle butter; and Indian spiced lamb shank with cauliflower, raisins, cashews and cilantro-mint chutney. Desserts will include Ricotta beignets with cardamom blueberry sauce and Winter citrus custard with candied kumquats and grapefruit sorbet. Appetizers are priced $8-12 and entrees $14-$24.
Blane will also serve a special bar menu with soups, salads and snacks, such as Cod and chorizo tater tots, creamy truffle mac and cheese, an Unum burger, and a selection of cheese and charcuterie.
Unum will soon offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with items like Belgian Waffles with seasonal fruit compote topped with frozen vanilla yogurt, and an Eggs Benedict on potato-caper cakes with smoked salmon & salmon-roe hollandaise.
Unum will offer more than a dozen wines by the glass, as well as a 60+ bottle list, and a rotating selection of craft beer and cocktails. The wine list has a strong focus on California wines as well as labels from old and new world wine regions, with an emphasis on value selections in the $30 to $60 price range.
Unum is located at 2917 M St. NW, Washington DC. For reservations or more information, please call 202-621-6959 or visit the website at www.unumdc.com
