“Dear PoPville,
Wanted to share my experience this morning as both a chance to vent and an opportunity to warn drivers in DC. I had my car booted this morning for $96 in tickets, from 2 parking tickets. This seems like an incredibly trivial amount to boot a car over, and for two tickets I had honestly not remembered (an email warning would have been nice, as I’m signed up for email alerts). In addition to this, they scratched the wheel they attached it to. I have a RPP and DC plates, having just renewed. Seems like something that could have been brought to my attention then!
The man that came to un-boot me was quick, knowledgable and super kind. He polished off the wheel with a cloth after removing the boot, and then gave me a direct supervisor number to file a complaint, at which point he said it this happens “all the time” and that for such a small amount the government would absolutely lose money after paying for the wheel repair.“

From the Mayor’s Office:
“Mayor Muriel Bowser has directed her Administration’s agencies to monitor developments related to the coronavirus occurring across the globe and in the United States. DC Health has confirmed that there are no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Washington, DC and that the risk of coronavirus remains low. As with any public health concern, Mayor Bowser is encouraging residents to be prepared and informed. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to follow up and let you know that we were able to connect Arielle to her good samaritans. Both were honored this past weekend, along with the paramedics and Metro police who responded, with a Cardiac Arrest Save Coin. The coin is presented to anyone who helps return a pulse to someone who has suffered cardiac arrest and is later released from the hospital in good health. (more…)

From DPW:
“The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that beginning February 29, 2020, the agency will issue $150 tickets to any motorist improperly standing, stopping or parking in a bike lane.
DPW has increased its bike lane enforcement program by mobilizing 26 new Parking Enforcement Officers (PEO’s) and giving the entire PEO team–now nearly 300 strong–the ability to photograph vehicles blocking bike lanes. (more…)

From DDOT:
“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced a year-long demonstration project of bus lanes on 14th Street NW in Columbia Heights designed to improve bus performance as well as pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
“Washingtonians are riding the bus more than ever before, especially in the thriving 14th Street NW corridor,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “We expect this project to help us advance Mayor Bowser’s goal of improving bus service across all eight wards, particularly for transit-reliant residents.”
The demonstration project, set to begin this summer, will be installed on 14th NW Street between Euclid and Newton Streets NW. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I am interested to know if any of your readers have suggestions on how to handle a situation. We have a developer in our neighborhood (Kingman Park) who came in and flipped a house on only two postcard permits. This includes adding two full bathrooms, an HVAC, moving the main plumbing line and shifting the entire kitchen, moving the electrical, gas, and plumbing. After complaining to DCRA for almost a month, during which time the house was actually listed on the market/came under contract, the city finally issued a Stop Work Order.
DCRA assured us that the realtor would have to make the Stop Work Order known to the new potential buyer, but honestly we are not sure. Since the order has been put on the house, the developer has covered the windows and started doing work again inside the house. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
My car was parked on a Sunday morning in a legal parking space on U St NW (in September.) When my daughter and came back to the car after exercising, we saw the note from the police officer and the damage to the front of my car (pics above).
A homeless man told us that the street sweeping vehicle backed into my car – which makes since given the damage. Mr. Chapman, the supervisor of the driver in the street sweeping vehicle, said the driver claimed he swerved to miss a pedestrian and hit my car. Interestingly, there is no damage to the driver side of the car. The damage is in the front. Also, this was early on a Sunday morning – not many people are out and about on U Street at that hour.
The timing could not be worse. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I had a couple of disturbing encounters with who I think is a homeless guy in the U street area. First time was a couple of months ago, I was walking my dog on U street and Vermont. He stopped as if he wanted to pet my dog, and when my dog approached him, he started cursing and tried to kick her head as if it were a football. Luckily, my dog reacted fast and avoided the kick. Last Friday, I was walking on V and 13, same guy was walking, this time carrying an 8-pack of paper towels. When I walked by him, he started cursing and again tried to kick my dog’s head. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
My car, which was legally parked in a Resident Only Zone on 3rd Street NE, between L and M Street (East side, closest to M Street) was ticketed and towed on Monday at 9:37am. I learned of the ticket on Tuesday morning, via an e-mail notification from the DMV Ticket Alert Service. I didn’t learn of the tow until the third inquiry call made to the Towing Control Dispatch Center, but that’s another story.
The stated reason for the ticket was that I was parked in an Emergency No Parking spot which, per the DMV Associate I’d spoken with, had been reserved for the day by a resident/neighbor. It’s my understanding that these notices are supposed to be put up 72 hours prior to the time the area is being reserved, meaning that there would have been a sign up on Friday on/before 9:37am. There was no sign up on Friday at 4:00pm and there was no sign up when my boyfriend walked by the car on Saturday. (more…)
