“Dear PoPville,

Last night, I found a pink iPhone near 3rd St NE and R St NE in my alley. After reaching out to the Eckington listserve to find it’s owner, I was informed that there was a mugging on the Metropolitan Branch Trial around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, July 13, 2015, and the only things that were stolen was an iPhone and $50 (and probably the victim’s general faith in mankind).

Information on the mugging (with pictures of the assailants) can be found here.

I can only imagine the state of shock the victim must be in, and I would like to get her phone back to her ASAP. Can you help?

Interested folks can e-mail me at [email protected] and simply tell me what kind of sticker is on the back of the iPhone.

If I don’t hear anything back today, I’ll send the iPhone to the police — where it will likely fall into a evidence-holding cosmic black hole.”

A reader reports:

“I heard gunshots last night in the vicinity of Montello Ave and Neal Street in Trinidad close to 12am last night. Police responded very quickly, stopping at that corner, before driving east down Neal street. A few neighbors came out on their stoops. I didn’t see any reports on the DC twitter feed. Has anyone heard of what may have happened?”

From an email:

“The meeting was arranged in response to community concern when a juvenile was arrested in connection with a vicious attack on a U Street resident but was then not subsequently charged by the DC Office of the Attorney General. Other community members have raised concerns after the shoots fired in the park in Columbia Heights and the way violent attacks by juveniles are being handled by the DC Office of the Attorney General.”

USC Trojans O.J. Simpson 32 Red College Football Throwback Jersey

“Dear PoPville,

About 3 weeks ago, my condo was robbed while both my roommate and I were home. [2nd and V St, NW] They broke in through our front door and stole about $15k worth of items. As you’ll see from the below email that I sent to friends in my neighborhood (Bloomingdale/Shaw), the police believe the most distinctive quality is a red jersey one of the suspects wore. Red OJ Simpson throwback jersey with 32 written on it. They believe he and his ‘teammates’ are still in the area and encouraged me to tell as many people as possible.”

Hey guys-

I wanted to give a quick ‘neighborhood watch’ warning/update.

Just back from the police department where they showed me surveillance footage of the guys they suspect robbed our condo. I’m very glad we didn’t wake-up during the robbery…

Four big men, estimating between 6’0 – 6’4, African American, 30-50 years old. The one distinctive fact we all need to be on the lookout for is a red throwback OJ Simpson jersey with the number 32 written on it. He believes all live or are still in the area (thanks to a big group house bust a few weeks) and think he’ll be wearing it again. Police in the area are on the lookout for it and he said if any of us see it to call 911 immediately.

From Council Member Nadeau’s Office:

“Councilmember Brianne Nadeau will be convening a public meeting tonight (Wed 7/8) at 9pm with MPD and DPR to answer any questions parents may have about the incident yesterday at the Columbia Heights Community Center, what the response was from the government agencies, and the work we are all doing to keep our neighborhood safe.

What: Public meeting with MPD and DPR about incident at 14th and Girard
Who: Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, Third District MPD Commander Jake Kishter, DPR Chief of Staff John Stokes, other officials and representatives to be confirmed
When: TONIGHT, Wednesday, July 8, 9pm
Where: Columbia Heights Community Center (1480 Girard Street NW)

Tonight’s meeting will be a chance to bring community members together so we can get all the facts out, and bring some comfort to our residents.

The meeting will complement Councilmember Nadeau’s ongoing efforts to improve public safety in the neighborhood.

On Thursday, July 16 from 4-6pm, Councilmember Nadeau and Mayor Bowser will hold a meeting at the Columbia Heights Rec Center to discuss community concerns, including public safety. Immediately before the meeting, the Mayor and Councilmember will take a “Results Walk” with the Joint Roll Call team, a community-police collaboration supported by the Councilmember that meets weekly to share information about public safety concerns.

Councilmember Nadeau’s office is also working with the Department of Behavioral Health to focus their prevention services in areas of concern to Columbia Heights residents. Last week, DBH’s team was on site at Columbia Heights metro to provide support services. The office is also in the process of organizing several public safety walks and meetings at locations in the Ward, and other efforts with ANCs, MPD, and DPR to address ongoing concerns in the area. Last week, the Councilmember met with DPR Director Anderson to talk about the work they are doing to prevent violence among youth with the programming they do throughout the year. The Councilmember has been working closely with MPD throughout Columbia Heights on issues that have arisen this year as well.”

A reader reports around 12pm:

“Apparently there was some sort of “shoot out” near the Girard Street playground on 15th and Girard (by the rec center). While dozens of kids were playing… Police are at the scene.”

Update from OP:

“Two people (at least) were shooting at each other. One ran into the park and turned around and kept shooting at whoever was outside of the park…WHILE HE WAS IN THE PARK. Surrounded by little kids.”

Update from DPR:

“The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has temporarily closed Columbia Heights Community Center (1480 Girard St., NW) due to a police incident in the Columbia Heights area.

The playground and building are closed. Everyone is safe inside the center and parents have been notified. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is currently conducting an investigation in the area.

Constituents will be notified when the center has been given the “all clear.” No evening activities have been cancelled at this time.”
