“Dear PoPville,

A quick prop to the cops in the first district this weekend. My wife and I were home late on Saturday night and we heard a man and women yelling down in an alley. We’re fairly high up in a large building and the couple were obscured in shadows so we couldn’t see them, but we heard the woman screaming like she was in pain and saying “stop”, so we called 911. To our astonishment, it took less than a minute for the first cop to arrive. The police acted quickly and professionally and calmly diffused the situation.

Ed. Note: MPD warned we were entering prime package theft season and gave some tips.

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert the neighborhood of Adams Morgan and readers about a very scary break-in/package theft that occurred last weekend in Lanier Heights on Adams Mill Road NW. A handful of neighbors at our condo building reported missing packages right after Thanksgiving, and when we went to our security cameras to determine what happened, the findings were scary to say the least. Around 4:40 AM on Saturday, November 28, three men gained entry into our building through the front door, and proceeded to grab all of our packages in the lobby and take them to the stairwell, where they tore up the boxes, took the contents, and left all of the packaging behind. Our security cameras were able to catch their descriptions, which were given to DCPD along with police reports. If you recognize any of these individuals, please let the police know so that we can prevent this from happening again.

To our Adams Morgan neighbors – please be aware and safe, especially around the holiday season. It’s unfortunate that this happened, but thieves in the area know when people are away from their homes and prey on those situations.”

Another reader writes:

“At roughly 5:00pm we caught a guy trying to steal our neighbor’s packages off of the stoop. My boyfriend confronted him and took the packages away from him. The guy left but only after asking “Are you sure these are your packages?” and being unsuccessful in scaring off my boyfriend. He was roughly five foot eight, had a twisted afro sort of hairstyle, and walked off casually into the alley off of 11th & Irving.”

“Eye on Policing: How Body Cameras Change Law Enforcement

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

Body-worn cameras are becoming a required tool for police officers in the United States. Communities nationwide are creating mandates for new technology, and federal money is being directed to the implementation of body-worn camera programs. But how will body-worn cameras impact policing? What changes will police officers and the communities they serve experience? Can body-worn cameras solve the big issues like lack of trust, lack of accountability, and miscommunication? The National Law Enforcement Museum is bringing together law enforcement and policy experts to discuss these questions and more. Join the conversation on Tuesday, December 8th.

“Dear PoPville,

Can you post a PSA for the Shaw neighborhood about break-ins? Our basement apt (10th & O NW) had the door kicked in yesterday and the police that responded said there was a similar break in on Kingman Pl only a few blocks away yesterday, too. it was probably because we had an amazon package delivered. The guy(s) may have been following the delivery guy, went to investigate the package, which usually gets left under the steps in front of the basement apt door, and decided the door looked kick-in-able. They also tried to get in upstairs (cut the screen on our security gate) but fortunately we don’t have a flip lock on our security gate and they gave up.

We thought the door was secure, but we were obviously wrong and we’re replacing it and getting a security gate installed as an extra precaution. Sigh.

also, let me know if you see a guy trying to unload 200 amazon brand batteries…”

apathy

A reader shares this incredibly upsetting incident:

“I didn’t think much of the charcoal gray SUV that pulled over when I was walking up 16th St. until I heard the screams of the woman trying to get out of the passenger door. I ran towards the woman who screamed at me, “my husband beats me every day! Call 911!” And as I got closer I could see why she was screaming and trying to get out of the car. The driver was pummeling her and an infant in the backseat was wailing. I try to grab her arm but her husband is too fast and yanks her in the car and locks the door. But shutting the door does little to muffle the screams coming from the woman and the baby in the backseat. And I can see the man and his fists and arms flying.

So I do the only thing I can do and the very least I think common human decency requires. I step in front of the SUV and photograph the license plate and stand in front of the car so the abuser can’t drive away while I dial 911. But because my phone is a computer and not a phone I can’t get through but I’m not too worried about it because I know someone else is seeing this and surely they are calling 911. So I ditch the call and start beating the windshield with my umbrella to try and get the guy to lay off. He tires of that quickly and is ready to flee but I’m still planted in front of him so he does exactly what you’d expect. He starts driving into me and tries to pry me out of his path by threatening to run me over. But here’s the thing asshole: you are going to have to run me over if you think I’m letting you get away before the police get here. Because I am my sister’s keeper. (more…)
