“Dear PoPville,

Saturday night around 1am there was a hate-motivated assault on Q St. NW between 15th and 16th across from the JCC, and it did not show up in the MPD blotter. I could hear yelling of gay slurs that escalated into some sort of violent attack where a man was yelling that he “f-cked her up,” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We haven’t been able to find much information on this so I’m sharing it far and wide for help.

On Saturday afternoon there was major police presence on Upshur between 4th and Illinois. We saw multiple police officers take down a man on the sidewalk. Eventually they took the man away on a stretcher.

Later that evening we stopped to talk to some neighbors on their front porch, right where it happened. The told us that they saw a man and kids (I believe they said grandkids) running up Upshur saying a man was in Grant Circle with a knife trying to hurt them. The neighbors took them in as the man with the knife approached. They were able to lock the door just in time. The man was on their front porch trying to get in as they called the cops. They even mentioned that he threw up on their porch. The police came and arrested him.

This story is way too similar to the awful story from Logan Circle a few weeks back. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Someone stuck some fire starters into our car wheel Sunday morning and set our car on fire. I saw that you had some posts about car arson in DC, do you know of recent cases? It’s pretty scary and we want to know if it’s part of a recent pattern. Someone mentioned that there were some cases of car arson in Logan this summer.

Since the incident, we heard from others living in the area that there’s been a string of car arsons in the shaw/truxton circle/logan region over the last few months. People have been helpful in updating the fire detectives working on their case. I’m sure the detectives will connect the dots, but I’m trying to proactively see if there are other similar incidents in the area.”

A reader reported hearing shots fired around 1:30pm near the Line Hotel.

I inquired with MPD and they replied:

“Our 3rd District responded to a shooting in the 2400 18th Street, NW. Responding officers located an adult male, suffering from gunshot wound. He was last reported conscious and breathing. Investigators are looking at the possibility that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

From MPD:

“Unfortunately we are currently investigating a shooting that occurred in the Unit block of Massachusetts Ave. NE this evening. One adult male was transported to the hospital. That block remains closed to traffic. We will provide updates as we are able.”

Ed. Note: In early September there was also a shooting near Union Station.

From the Washington Post:

“A man who was shot multiple times Wednesday night in front of Union Station has died and the attack is being investigated as a homicide, according to D.C. police.”

Perhaps related to many messages I got along these lines:

“any reason I just heard the US Capitol alert siren go off? Typically they test it on Saturdays- Halloween at 11 pm seems to be a bad time to test it…”

“Dear PoPville,

There was a story about someone who metro police were looking for because he was sexually harassing people on the metro. I was very distressed to learn that he is an accounting professor at UDC. Students in his class still have yet to hear from the University about this issue. He was teaching accounting I class on Saturday at 9:30.

I am very concerned for many reasons, but mainly a registered sex offender was allowed to teach at the institution.

[ARLNow reported:

“Day is a registered sex offender, according to MTPD. He was previously accused of other sexual crimes on a Boston MBTA subway train in 2004 and a Metro train in Arlington in 2002, according to news reports.”]

At this point in history this is just unacceptable. Students are very worried about their safety and the plan for finishing the semester their grades.”

Ed. Note: An old article from 2012 after a previous arrest says: “He has taught at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am the owner of Summit To Soul. I wanted to provide an update on the indecent exposure incident that occurred Monday night. Last night as my manager and I were leaving the shop at closing, we spotted the perpetrator from Monday night starting to do the exact same thing less than one block from my business on 8th street.
