Shooting Homicide in Petworth/Brightwood Park 6:25pm Sunday

800 block of Jefferson Street, NW

From MPD:

“On Sunday November 18, 2018, at approximately 6:25pm Fourth District members responded to call for sounds of gunshots, in the 800 block of Jefferson ST NW. Upon their arrival they located a victim, who had been shot multiple times. The victim was suffering from life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

This case is actively being investigated by MPDs Homicide Branch. Anyone with any information is encouraged to call MPD on 202-727-9099.”

A reader reported:

“I heard eight or so shots. Heard a similar number near there yesterday [Saturday] at 8pm.”

Another reader heard the Saturday 8pm shooting was around 5th and Kennedy Street, NW.

Woman Walking Her Dog Sexually Assaulted 10:45pm around 12th and Mass. Ave, NW

A reader reports:

“A woman was sexually assaulted last night around 10:45pm near Logan Circle. She was walking her dog and a man followed her into the driveway of her building just off of 12th St and Mass Ave NW.

The suspect was not caught so people in the area, please be careful and walk with a buddy if possible!”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect in connection with a First Degree Sexual Abuse offense that occurred on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, in the 1200 block of Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest.

At approximately 10:45 pm, the suspect approached a female victim from behind at the listed location. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim and then fled the scene. (more…)

“On my morning commute this morning around 7 am, I came to an abrupt halt at 9th and Florida due to the whole area being closed off by police. From Warby Parker in Shaw all the way down to Nellies was taped off, including side streets. There were multiple police cars throughout each closed off area as well.”

“What in the world is going on tonight?! Sounds like there may be a third. Heard at least 6 gun shots around 10:35 or so. Shortly after, lots of sirens. Still hearing them now. Can’t be certain but the sound of the shots seemed like it came from somewhere southeast of Shaw/Logan.”

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting in the 800 block of Florida Avenue NW. An adult male has been transported to an area hospital with a non life threatening gunshot wound.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect road closures in the area as we investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

“In reference to the shooting investigation, the 700 and 800 blocks of Florida Avenue, NW along with the 1900 and 2000 blocks of 8th Street, NW are currently closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. These closures may extend into rush hour traffic so please plan an alternate route should this be your normal course of travel in the morning.”

Ed. Note: Further west on Florida Ave:

“Good morning. The Northbound lanes of 18th Street NW between T Street and Florida Avenue are currently closed to vehicular traffic as a result of a police investigation. The Metropolitan Police Department is assisting with traffic control for a federal agency who has executed a search warrant related to violent crimes and narcotics in the block.

We are working to get the roadway reopened as soon as possible. In the meantime motorists may experience delays in this area.”

Thanks to another reader for responding with this likely related article from the Washington Post yesterday:

“A D.C. man who described himself as a white nationalist to law enforcement officers and became a social-media follower of the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting has been arrested on a gun charge after his worried relatives contacted the authorities, according to federal court filings.

Clark, who lives in the Bloomingdale neighborhood, was arrested Nov. 9, court filings show, after two family members alerted police to his increasingly agitated outbursts, including that the 11 victims of the Pittsburgh shooting “deserved it.”

Hero Dog Survives Being Shot in the Face Protecting Owner After Armed Robbery

Amazing. On November 9th we learned that:

“an armed robbery occurred in the 1600 block of Franklin Street, NE at approximately 7pm on the evening of November 9th. The victim of the robbery was exiting his vehicle when he was approached by a man with a gun who took several items of value from the victim. After obtaining the items the suspect attempted to run to an awaiting vehicle, but the victim’s dog, who was in the car at the time of the robbery, jumped from the vehicle and attacked the robber. A second suspect waiting in the car fired a single shot, striking the dog.”

At that time all we knew as that the owner took the dog to an animal hospital for treatment of its injuries. I am happy to report that MPD has now let me know that “the dog is alive. He lost his eye but is now back with his owner.” It’s not much but I know many, myself included, were eager to learn how the hero dog was doing. That s/he is alive and back home is great news. Thanks to all for messaging me their concerns for the pup.

“Earlier today [11:30am] officers responded to the 1300 block of North Capitol St NW for a call for sounds of gunshots. Responding officers did recover several spent casings in the block. A canvass of the area for victims or damaged property yielded negative results. Police presence in the area will be increased in the interim. Anyone with any information regarding this matter are urged to contact MPD at 202-727-9099.”

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting in the 1900 block of 8th street NW. An adult male has been transported by ambulance to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso.

A second adult male was taken by private vehicle to an area hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound. It is believed that this second victim was also shot in the 1900 block of 8th street NW.

MPD tells me the owner took the dog to an animal hospital for treatment of its injuries. It’s unclear of the status right now but will update when/if more becomes known.

“Detectives of the Fifth District are investigating an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) that occurred on 11/07/18 at approximately 2330 hours. A call for Sounds of Gunshots was dispatched for the 1100 block of Owen St. NE. Officers were on scene quickly and located an adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg. Preliminary information suggests that the female victim was shot from a vehicle that subsequently crashed and was left on the scene. Four suspects exited the vehicle and fled north through the alley in the 1100 block of Owen St., where they were last seen. The victim was conscious and breathing when she was taken to a local hospital. The suspects are described as 4 black males, wearing all dark clothing with the exception of one who was wearing lighter-colored pants. Any persons with information regarding this crime may contact the Fifth District Detectives’ Office at 202-698-0260, or the MPD Command Information Center at 202-727-9099.
