“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to put out a safety alert to the biking community and anyone else using the greenways in the area.

I was tackled off my bike and robbed at gunpoint on the Sligo Creek Trail. This happened in the wooded area between Green Meadows and Kirkwood Apartments, which is near the West Hyattsville metro stop, around 9:20 am on Thursday morning. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to alert readers to be on the lookout for this person who was able to gain access to the Library of Congress daycare earlier this week. He is a known convicted sex offender (his victim was 5!!!).

The system worked – he had no contact with the children, was escorted out, arrested by Capitol Police and charged with unlawful entry. However, parents were notified last night that he has been released.

Capitol Police has issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for him for the Capitol Hill area, but it appears that his address on record may be the shelter on New York Avenue. If he is homeless and transient, he could end up anywhere in the city.

Wanted to alert readers to be vigilant, as always, but in particular for this person.”

I got a bunch of messages from folks asking why KIPP was on lockdown earlier this week – now we know why and it is awful. From the Washington Post:

“The incident occurred in a middle-school classroom at KIPP DC Key Academy in the 4800 block of Benning Road SE, according to the school and a police report. The report said the boy and girl were arguing “about a pencil” shortly before 12:30 p.m. when the boy brandished a pocket knife and threatened to stab the girl.

He then lifted his shirt, showing the girl a loaded Beretta pistol, police said.”

Ed. Note: Yesterday we heard the other side.

From Councilmember Grosso’s office:

“The following is Councilmember David Grosso’s opening statement delivered at the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety hearing on the Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019, which would abandon the District of Columbia’s criminalization approach to sex work in favor of one that focuses on human rights, health, and safety:

“Thank you, Councilmember Allen, for convening this hearing today.

“This is a historic occasion as we consider how we as the government and the community should treat commercial sex and, most importantly, how we can better protect the human rights of the people involved.

“Earlier this year, along with Councilmembers Robert White, Brianne Nadeau, and Anita Bonds, I introduced the bill before us today, the Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019.

“Over the past 3 years I developed this legislation in close partnership with the Sex Worker Advocates Coalition, and the bill is in line with recommendations from Amnesty International, the World Health Organization, U.N. AIDS, Human Rights Watch, and numerous other human rights, public health, and anti-trafficking organizations.

“Since coming into office, I have met with and listened to sex workers and other people who trade sexual services for money as well as survivors of human trafficking.

“I met with them because all of my work at the Council is grounded in a human rights and racial equity framework.

“That means looking out for the human rights of the most marginalized communities, including people in the sex trade, and reconsidering policies that perpetuate racism.

“In listening to those most directly affected, I heard how criminalization and stigma cause tremendous harm to people in the sex trade. (more…)
