“Washington Gas Has Failed to Take Action to Stop Toxic Chemicals from Leaching into the Anacostia River; Settlement Requires Additional Mitigation Measures”

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today announced that Washington Gas has agreed to contain hazardous pollution actively seeping into the Anacostia River at the former site of the company’s East Station, a gas plant that operated on the banks of the river for nearly 100 years.

An investigation by the District’s Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) uncovered evidence that toxic chemicals—byproducts of gas manufacturing at the shuttered plant—are currently bubbling up from the contaminated riverbed and seeping into the water from polluted soil on the riverbank. OAG alleges that Washington Gas has failed to take adequate steps to prevent the ongoing release of pollutants. Under the terms of a new settlement agreement, the company must install a new floating boom to contain pollution on the surface of the water; install new barriers to prevent the release of pollutants from the riverbed and riverbank; submit to ongoing monitoring by the District; and face fines for any noncompliance. “Dear PoPville,

I am a resident in the Petworth neighborhood and my son attends EL Haynes. Yesterday morning, around 8:15 am, DC MPD and US Marshals appeared to be executing a warrant with extreme show of force two blocks from an Haynes with preschoolers on the playground. The effort appeared unsuccessful, and police took their time leaving the scene as families commuted to school and work. This show of force is unacceptable, a true lack of judgement and eroding trust in law enforcement that will take years to overcome.”

DC Attorney General “Secures $259,294 Judgement Against Former DC Assistant Principal Who Fraudulently Worked A Second Full-Time Job in Rhode Island”

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today announced that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has secured a $259,294 judgment against Michael Redmond, a former assistant principal at Stephen E. Kramer Middle School in Ward 8, for defrauding the District by taking a full-time, in-person job in Rhode Island while he was supposed to be working remotely for the DC Public Schools (DCPS). The court determined that Redmond “engaged in conduct that showed a willful disregard for the truth and a willingness to engage in defrauding the District of Columbia,” knowingly collecting more than $45,000 of his DCPS salary for work he did not complete. The court imposed treble damages and civil penalties for violating the District’s False Claims Act. (more…)

DC AG Warns “District residents about predatory practices in the home solar system sales and loan industry.”

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today issued a Consumer Alert to help inform District residents about predatory practices in the home solar system sales and loan industry.

Because federal tax credits for residential solar systems are ending at the end of 2025, residents may see an uptick in high-pressure sales tactics by salespeople for the home solar system industry. (more…)
