Props to the Cops – Multiple Robbery Arrests

Due to community concerns regarding robberies, the Metropolitan Police Department is releasing information on recent robbery arrests. Citywide there have been 351 arrests for robbery this year. Below are recent robbery arrests made within the last week.

First District

Saturday, March 10, 2012, at approximately 9:00 am, in the 1200 block of I Street, NE, a suspect assaulted an individual and took cash from the victim. The victim sustained minor injuries. On Monday, March 26, 2012, following an investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department, an adult male suspect was arrested for Robbery Force and Violence.

Monday, March 26, 2012, at approximately 7:50 pm, a victim was approached by an individual armed with a handgun who demanded the victim’s money. During the robbery, the suspect shot the victim who sustained non-life threatening injuries. On Thursday, March 29, 2012, following an investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect was arrested in the 900 block of 3rd Street, SW for Assault with Intent to Rob while Armed and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon – Gun.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at approximately 9:30 pm, a victim was in the 800 block of 3rd Street, NE, when two individuals attempted to take the victim’s cell phone. A short time later two suspects were arrested at 11th H Streets, NE. They were arrested for Assault with Intent to Rob.

Fourth District

Saturday, March 24, 2012, at approximately 7:15 pm, a victim was accosted by two suspects at 9th Street and Rock Creek Church Road, NW. One of the suspects reached into the victim’s pocket and grabbed an Apple I Phone. An investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department led to the quick apprehension of two juvenile male suspects in the 3900 Block of 13th Street, NW. The suspects were arrested for Robbery Snatch.

Sunday, March 25, 2012, at approximately 9:45 am, a victim was physically assaulted by two suspects in the 3900 block of 7th Street, NW. The suspects attempted to steal the victim’s bicycle but fled when other citizens appeared. Members of the Metropolitan Police Department apprehended one of the suspects, an adult male, in the 600 block of Newton Place, NW. He was arrested for Assault with Intent to Commit a Robbery.

MPD Takes Tweeting to the Next Level and Props to the Cops

Yesterday a reader tweeted to @PoPVille that he thought there was a bank robbery in NoMa which leads to a pretty cool Props to the Cops:

Most police officers go through an entire 25 year career without arresting a bank robber.

At noon today, Captain Marvin Lyons and Sergeant Randy Griffin, both of the Fifth District, were in the 1200 block of 1st St., NE when a man walking nearby suddenly had the backpack in this hand explode in red paint–the dye pack an alert teller had inserted into the robber’s bag along with the cash.

Capt. Lyons and Sgt. Griffin were able to subdue the suspect and arrest the man, who had just robbed the TD Bank across the street.

Streets in the nearby area were closed until 2:30 as we examined the getaway bag and a bag inside the bank that the robber had left behind.

We are happy to report that the quick actions of these two officers put a dramatic finish to the bank robbery, and their actions are certainly worthy of high praise.

On March 21, 2012, at about 10 PM, a citizen was walking in the 3900 block of 14th Street NW, when a subject grabbed him and pushed him up against a building and attempted to take his property from his body and his hand. As this was happening, two of our own Fourth District members, Lt. John Haines and Joseph LaFrance, were off-duty in the area and quickly intervened before the victim could be seriously hurt or any property could be taken.

The suspect was only able to obtain the victim’s cigarettes from his hand and then drop it. And the victim was not seriously injured. An adult male was arrested for Robbery Force and Violence.

Congratulations go out to the Fourth District Members John Haines and Joseph LaFrance for their hard work and dedication to the job in keeping the citizens of the District safe!

Props to the Cops: “Arrest Made in the Homicide in the 1000 block of Taylor Street, NE”

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Departments Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the fatal shooting which occurred in the 1000 block of Taylor Street, NE.

On Monday, December 19, 2011, at approximately 5:54 pm units from the Fourth District responded to a call for a shooting in the 1000 block of Taylor Street, NE. Upon arrival, they located the victim, an adult male, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local area hospital. The victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 19-year-old Derrick Ragland of Northwest, Washington DC.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 26-year-old Raymond Faunteroy, of Northeast, Washington DC, was arrested in Arlington County, VA pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.

On Tuesday, March 20, 2012 Mr. Faunteroy was returned to the District of Columbia and formally charged with First Degree Murder while Armed for the shooting death of Derrick Ragland.

“This afternoon at approximately 3:45 pm a suspect was arrested for Robbery in the 700 block of Pennsylvania Ave SE as part of a MPD Robbery Decoy Operation. Two months ago Chief Lanier initiated a city-wide plan to address the rise in robberies. This plan includes deployment of patrol officers, the investigation of suspects (including those who traffic in stolen property) and several tactical operation, such as decoy operations. The initial deployment of MPD decoys were done confidentially; however, with the progression of the operations we will from time to time identify those arrests which are the result of a police decoy operation.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the selfless of officers who assume the undercover roles in the operations”

and

“At 2:45 PM, a robbery knife occurred in the 700 block of Columbia Road, Northwest.

Several officers on patrol were nearby the scene and observed the suspects fleeing.

The officers gave chase on foot and apprehended three suspects.

All three suspects have been arrested and charged with Robbery. The victim of this robbery was not injured.”

and

“Tonight at approximately 10:30 PM the Third District Crime Suppression Team made contact with two subjects in the 2600 block of 14 St NW.

Subsequent to the stop a hand gun was recovered from one subject and drugs were recovered from the second subject.”

This is pretty awesome. 3D Commander Jacob Kishter sent an email to the 3D listserv:

“At 1200 PM, a robbery snatch occurred at 12th and Vermont Streets, Northwest. A nearby officer on patrol observed the robbery and gave chase on foot. The subject was apprehended a short distance later and the victim’s property was returned, she was unharmed.”

Chief Groomes replied to the message:

“I want to add that it was 3ds commander…jake kishter who apprehended this felon. Kudos to him and his team.”

Props to the Cops – Another Graffiti Arrest

On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at approximately 12:49 am, a Third District midnight officer was patrolling the alley in the 700 block of Irving Street, NW. The officer observed a suspicious person in the alley and proceeded to investigate further. Upon observing the officer, the person ran from the officer but was stopped in the next block. The person was caught in possession of a bag containing items commonly used to deface public and private properties. During investigation, police discovered that suspect had made graffiti marks on privately owned buildings. Police arrested the adult suspect and charged him with Destroying/Defacing Private Property.

This arrest is significant in that business owners and residents had recently reported a number of “tagging” incidents in and around the Pleasant Plains and Parkview neighborhoods and we trust that this investigation will help reduce graffiti in our communities.

The First District Vice Unit has been deployed in PSA 104 for the last few weeks due to robberies. Tonight, shortly after 7:30 pm, vice officers working in plainclothes observed several suspicious persons in the area of 9th and H Streets NE. The subjects approach a couple, at which time one of the suspects separated himself from the others and pulled a mask over his face. As he approached the couple, the officers exited their vehicle and the suspect looked in the direction of the officers and immediately removed his mask. The officers continued toward him, he ran and was observed tossing a weapon in a trash can. The suspect was apprehended and the weapon was recovered. The weapon was found to be a imitation pistol and the juvenile suspect was charged with Possession of a Prohibited Weapon and Wearing a Mask While Committing a Crime. The offense that this suspect was charged with is a misdemeanor; however, I believe that the officers preventing at least one robbery from occurring.

Props to the Cops – Arrest in a Home Invasion Burglary and Pistol Whipping

On Saturday, December 17, 2011, at about 1:45 PM, an adult male was the victim of a home invasion in the 1600 block of Irving Street, NW, during which he was pistol whipped and bound with duct tape.

Two male subjects ransacked his residence and fled with cash and other property. After an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department, the two suspects were identified and arrest warrants were obtained.

Both individuals have subsequently been arrested and charged with Burglary One while Armed for their participation in this offense: The first adult male was arrested on Saturday, February 25th, and the second adult male was arrested on February 28th. A .45 caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol was also recovered in relation to this case.

Three District Men Sentenced to Prison Terms
In Attempted Drive-By Shooting of Rival Neighborhood
– More Than 25 Shots Fired in Pre-Dawn Attack –

WASHINGTON – Three men have been sentenced to prison terms on charges stemming from their roles in an attempted drive-by shooting that targeted a rival neighborhood and their subsequent efforts to obstruct justice, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced today.

Sergio Waynes, 24, was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice. Brian Coles, 27, was sentenced today to three years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, and obstruction of justice. Marcio Green, 28, was sentenced on February 27, 2012 to a seven-year prison term for assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license.

All three defendants are from Washington, D.C. They were convicted by a jury in December 2011 following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and sentenced by the Honorable Heidi M. Pasichow.

The government’s evidence at trial demonstrated that the defendants were affiliated with the Kennedy Street neighborhood in Northwest Washington, a crew also known as “KDY.” KDY has a rivalry with the Crittenden Street neighborhood in Northwest Washington, also known as “CRT.” Waynes believed that individuals from CRT were responsible for the July 2009 murder of his best friend, Dewayne Coles, 20, a KDY member and the brother of defendant Coles.

Early on August 17, 2011, the defendants were overheard talking about Dewayne Coles and seen pouring out liquor, presumably in tribute to him. They also were seen passing around a semi-automatic handgun with an extended clip during various points. Then, shortly after 5 a.m., the defendants made their way in Waynes’s vehicle from the Kennedy Street neighborhood into CRT territory, near Ninth and Crittenden Streets NW, at which point Green commented about someone he saw on the street and told Waynes to stop the car.

Armed with the semi-automatic pistol with an extended clip, Green exited the vehicle. At that point, no fewer than 26 bullets began to fly. Although it is not clear whether Green was able to fire before he himself was hit, the government’s evidence established that Waynes and Green had entered their rival neighborhood’s territory on a mission to seek revenge, and upon seeing their intended targets, Green brought upon himself, the eyewitnesses and the residents of this otherwise quiet residential neighborhood a hail of gunfire that resulted in two gunshot injuries to Green. Following the shooting, numerous acts of obstruction and tampering ensued, including efforts to persuade eyewitnesses to lie to the police and tamper with evidence, as well as the discarding of the weapon used in the shootings.

The shooting was one of many violent episodes in a back-and-forth battle between the warring neighborhood crews. This prosecution was, in part, the result of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s initiative to target gang violence in the District of Columbia, and to stop the cycle of violence.

U.S. Attorney Machen commended the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department officers who were involved in the investigation and prosecution of this case. He commended the outstanding work of Detectives Thomas Austin-Braxton, Curtis Prince, John Cobb, and Michael Pepperman; Crime Scene Search Officer Jaron Hickman, and Officers Eric Young, Jeffrey Maslona, and Kenneth Bryant. U.S. Attorney Machen also cited the efforts of several members of his staff, including Litigation Support Services technicians Tracy Van Atta, Jeannie Lattimore Brown, and Joshua Ellen; Victim Witness Specialist Michael Hailey; Paralegals Wanda Trice, Debra Smith, and Kelly Blakeney, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katherine Sawyer and Jennifer Kerkhoff, who investigated, indicted, and presented the government’s case at trial.
