A reader writes with a link to NotionsCapital:

“Ben’s Next Door (1211 U Street, NW) was a club where jazz legend Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton played from 1936 to 1938.”

A bit more history from the article:

“U Street NW was Washington’s “Black Broadway” long before Ben Ali served his first chili dog. The Lincoln Theater and Lincoln Colonnade night club were at 1215; the theater, now a “theatre,” survives. The Chili Bowl itself (1213 U Street NW) was previously a nickelodeon theater and pool hall, and 1211 next door was a nightclub, variously called the Blue Moon, the Music Box, and the Jungle Inn. From 1936 until 1938 the night club, soon to be Ben’s Next door, was the musical home of jazz pianist, composer, vocalist, performer, and all-around character “Jelly Roll” Morton.”

Very cool. You can read the full article at NotionsCapital.

Looks like they have a great outdoor dining area here. What’s the scoop here? Is this a brunch place, a restaurant, a bar or all of the above? What’s the scene? Is it high falutin? How’s the food? Anyone strongly recommend it?

I saw this on the CH listserv and thought it would be of great interest. It is from the owner – John Andrade:

“Located at 11th & Park, The Pint, as I’ve come to nick name it, will be 2 levels. The street level will be very much restaurant/bar similar in casualness to Commonwealth Gastro Pub with an open style kitchen. We’ll offer great food, a casual groove, 25 beers on draft and no bottles or cans, plentiful wines and yes, an outdoor seating area. Beers will be diverse including cask conditioned as well as the occasional gravity poured, firkin. There will be 2 “idiot boxes” since I do enjoy sports and I believe few things go better than quality beer while watching some football. Certainly not a sports bar, just some back ground.

The basement level will be equal in size and will have both a separate entrance and internal connection. The downstairs will have a more playful personality and will carry the name “The Joint Chiefs” while still serving the same food and beverages. There will be 4 8ft. billiard tables, to be rented by the hour, shuffle board, another bar and a spacious lounging area with the ability to section off for private party/receptions. A ping pong table top will be available for covering 1 billiard table for those interested.

Scheduled opening is based on 3DG’s renovation of the building but for now I’m hoping for spring of ’09.”

Sound good?

From a reader:

“Glam Racket is a new dance party happening at Mayorga Lounge. As of now the upcoming dates are this Saturday the 16th and the 30th. It’s 21+ and free. The music is a fun, quirky mix of hip hop, indie, pop, electronic, and pretty much anything you can dance to.

I’ve attached a flyer, and people can get free downloads at: http://www.zshare.net/audio/15366741c64bcfbb/ or www.djdocrok.com. We’re also giving away free CDs (and maybe cupcakes)!”

Think Mayorga is a good spot to host a party like this?

On Friday night DJ Gavin will be performing at the Looking Glass Lounge. Do you think this will infuse some life into the LGL? Good idea or bad idea?

“Dear PoPville friends and neighbors:

Before I get into all the hoohums and fancy talkin’, let me give the bottom line:

Wednesday night is my birthday party at Looking Glass Lounge. I’ve hired an Elvis impersonator to entertain. You are invited.

Okay, now for the back story…

I don’t know how your summer has been, but mine has SUCKED ASS.

You name just about any awful thing that could happen to someone and I know a person that’s experienced it this summer. I mean, in addition to the fucked up state of our economy and world. And in addition to the death, cancer, lay-offs, surgery, and other assorted terribleness that’s happened to the people I care about–I have not escaped myself. My beloved asshole cat died two weeks ago.

One evening I was sitting around sipping a few drops of liquid comfort (i.e. Yukon Jack), saying to myself, “Woe is me,” when I had a moment of clarity and enlightenment. Invite continues after the jump. (more…)

Wow, when did the Angry Inch bar on 18th Street in Adams Morgan change it’s name? I think this new sign looks pretty ridiculous. Do you like this sign?

So what’s the story here, is this a new bar? Is it any good?

“For Olympics dorks such as myself, who also enjoy a good drink now and again, what neighborhood bars/restaurants will be showing Olympics on t.v., and most importantly, what bars have good t.v.s!?”

I’d think Solly’s would be a good place. Maybe Momo’s Cafe Nema? Where do you think would be a good place to catch the Olympics at a bar?

So it seems “PI” is coming in the place of Blue Fin on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Anyone know what PI will be? Restaurant? Bar? Both?

This note was posted in the Columbia Heights Listserv regarding the new wine bar slated to go into the corner spot at 11th and Lamont:

“I have not posted on here in a while, so not sure if this subject has been raised of late, but I wanted to find out if there were any other residents in the neighborhood concerned about the proposed wine bar for the Southwest corner of 11th and Lamont Streets, NW. I am adamantly opposed to it, primarily because I live in close proximity and am certain this will lead to late-night crowding, noise, and other pollution. While that corridor of 11th Street is zoned commercial, I doubt most of us want to see it turn into a corridor of bars. As a resident in close proximity of the business, I suffered enough from the trash and nuisance (horrible, overflowing dumpsters and lots of rats at my doorstep) when the location was a deli — I can only imagine it will be worse as a bar.I plan to oppose the liquor license at the hearing in September and would appreciate hearing from other like-minded neighbors. I am also willing to organize a petition drive.”

Well, I am willing to organize a petition of support to counter the author’s petition drive. Fortunately I think he will find it very difficult to counter the prevailing sentiment of support.

Heather Goss wrote a thoughtful response to this post:

“I can understand your concerns, but respectfully disagree with you. It’s not quite right to call this another “bar,” a la Wonderland. Yes, it will be open late, but it will be a more classy, sit-down wine establishment, not a rowdy joint. And I don’t see it creating any more trash than the deli that preceded it. Furthermore, it’s owned and being run by a foursome of guys who’ve established a number of fantastic venues around the city, not the least of which is Warehouse (Paul Ruppert), an art gallery/cafe/bar/theater whose closing due to the massive tax hike down at the convention center is a huge loss to the D.C. community.

As someone who lives off of Georgia Avenue, I continue to look forward to venues moving into the neighborhood that aren’t more huge chain stores or dumpy liquor stores. And along the same note, I’d really love to see anyone opposing this venue step forward (perhaps with some cash) with some suggestions of what should be there, because right now it’s an empty storefront, just another blight like so many others in the neighborhood.”

I obviously agree with Heather on this matter. So what say you all: Is there actually some controversy to a fantastic wine bar going into a commercially zoned strip?
