“Dear PoP,

A friend and I are wracking our brains trying to determine whether there are any bars/restaurants/public spaces (anything really) with an outdoor fireplace/pit. I love winter, and would dearly like to sit outside by a fire on a sunny afternoon, but sadly my search to find one in the city has proven fruitless.”

This is an awesome question. I can’t think of any off the top of my head – do you guys know of any?

Bar Pilar is located at 1833 14th St, NW (south of T street). Anyone who has spent time at Bar Pilar on a Friday or Saturday night will recognize that an expansion would provide some needed breathing room. Personally I think it would be great.

According to a liquor license amendment recently posted out front, the:

“LICENSEE REQUESTS EXPANSION OF PREMISE TO INCLUDE 2ND FLOOR FOR 46 ADDITIONAL SEATS”

Their Web site reminds me:

“Every Tuesday night from 5pm – 11pm our chefs prepare a home style meal inspired by different cultures. From rustic French to American picnic food, come discover our home cooking with your friends and you’ll be sure to leave happy. Each week he creates a menu based on the freshest produces available to him that week. No future menus have yet been established. The theme is usually announced each week a couple days in advance of the event.”

You can see their regular menu here.

And on a side note while looking upstairs I was reminded of their awesome art deco numbers:

As well as some awesome sculptures:

When I walked by the old EFN Lounge space at 1318 9th St, NW last weekend I heard some serious work going on inside. There are also a number of permits on the door, one of which says the proposed new use will continue to be a restaurant. Anyone hear any rumors/scuttlebutt of what/who’s going in?

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

And nearby at 1414 9th St, NW in the old Vegetate space, Cafe Eagle and Lounge has applied for a liquor license.

Back in May we learned that a place called the Museum of Arts and Sciences was coming to 915 F St, NW. Didn’t know much more beyond that and the mystery continues. Thanks to a reader for sending the word:

“At noon on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, the ownership of Museum (Museum of Arts & Sciences, LLC) unexpectedly suspended all operations and shuttered the business.”

You can find a bit of background on the space from DC Mud here.

Anyone ever check it out?

Thanks to all who sent links to updates. I’m not even gonna pretend to understand what’s going on here. TBD writes:

The Office of the U.S. Attorney for D.C. has just released a statement on the medical examiner’s findings — no move to re-file charges at this time, but they “intend to carefully study these conclusions as part of our legal analysis of this tragic incident.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has confirmed that the manner of death was a homicide, and the cause described like this: Excited Delirium Associated With Arrhythmogenic Cardiac Anomalies, Alcohol Intoxication and Physical Exertion With Restraint.

DC 9 reopened this past Friday.

You can see some background on the incident here.

Anyone want to speculate what’s going to happen?

The folks behind the Ugly Mug are continuing to expand their empire. Most recently they took over the old Alliance space and opened up District 2 Bar and Grille at 3238 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.

Now they are taking over the old Uptown Cathay space at 5016 Connecticut Ave, NW (across from Politics and Prose). The liquor license application says the new spot will be called Jake’s American Grille and will be a:

“New Restaurant, Serving American Bistro and Cuisine, televisions, music.
Seating Capacity is 50. Total occupancy load 50, including Sidewalk Café seats – 10.”

A little competition for Comet Ping Pong?
