Around midnight last night a victim was stabbed inside the bathroom at Fruit Bat located at 1236 H St, NE. The victim was quickly taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition. The suspect fled and no arrest was made. As usually happens after incidents like this, there will likely be an emergency closure of Fruit Bat. Fruit Bat will remain open during the investigation.

I don’t know anything about the victim, the assailant, or the circumstances of what/why it happened. I hope to update when more info becomes available.

Red Palace is located at 1212 H St NE.

From a press release:

Since merging buildings and opening in November of 2010, Red Palace has quickly established itself as a premiere venue for live bands and alternative, side show artists and burlesque acts.

We are proud to immediately announce the opening of our patio. This brings another popular addition, and favorite outdoor space to socialize and enjoy the DC evenings.

Ghana cafe is located at 1336 14th St, NW by Rhode Island Ave (and formerly of Adams Morgan). The last few times I’ve walked by the place has been pretty crowded so I thought it was time for a proper judging. For those who are fans of the food – do you recommend any specific dishes?

You can see their menu here.

Also – do folks like this as a place to just grab a beer?

A couple of weeks ago I gave an update on the new bar/restaurant coming to replace Commonwealth at 1400 Irving St, NW. At the time I was able to share that it will offer bbq and have a southern/bluegrass/country music component. I’ve been getting lots of emails for an update – particularly asking about the new name. It’s called Acre 121.

Acre 121 comes from the history of Columbia Heights. Apparently 14th and Irving St, NW fell under a parcel called Acre 121 consisting of 121 acres of land. It was acquired in 1881 by Sen John Sherman who then named the 121 acres Columbia Heights. Later on there was also a horse track that ran through this area so when all the decorating is completed, you’ll be seeing lots of historical photos inside.

As I’ve mentioned before the food is going to bbq style so expect to see lots of pulled pork, chicken, cornbread etc.

But to be honest – my favorite part is the music element. The band they had last night even played some Mumford and Sons! There will be live music 5 nights a week.

And the space has been opened up nicely (though some furniture will be updated):

So mark your calendars for June 29th opening.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Around 2:30am last night/this morning bricks were thrown through the windows at Room 11 (3234 11th St, NW) and Meridian Pint (3400 11th St, NW) in Columbia Heights.

A white man wearing black jeans, black sweatshirt, and black ski mask threw 2 bricks at Meridian Pint breaking one small window then headed south on 11th and broke one large window (see photo above) at Room 11. While employees were in both establishments at the time, fortunately nobody was hurt.

The police responded quickly.

I’ll update when the vandal is arrested.

From a press release:

Nearly a decade after first opening its doors in the District, Kimpton’s Bar Rouge is proud to introduce a new menu and design. Located at 1315 16th Street, N.W. adjacent to Hotel Rouge, the longtime fixture on the hotel lounge scene will re-launch as a neighborhood wine bar offering a global wine list, seasonal American small plates, and handcrafted cocktails.

The wine menu features a tailored list of 50 wines from around the world, handpicked by Kimpton’s Master Sommelier Emily Wines and Bar Rouge’s Manager/Mixologist Rico Wisner, formerly of Poste Moderne Brasserie. These selections will be offered in three pour sizes, with all standard pours under $10. “Our goal is to offer wines that are hot yet approachable, and that over-deliver on value,” says Wisner. Examples include the Paco & Lola Albarino and the Mas Guiot Rosé, as well as a selection of Wisner’s favorite “local and funky” wines, such as the Keswick Verdejo from Charlottesville, VA and the Vint Hall Cabernet Franc from Northern Virginia. The bar will also offer a diverse menu of craft and local beers, such as Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon IPA from Baltimore, and Port City Optima Wit from Alexandria, VA.

Wisner will augment the wine list with a new batch of the handcrafted libations that gained him a loyal following while bar supervisor at Poste. Most of the specialty cocktails will feature a wine base, and make use of fresh ingredients harvested from the organic rooftop herb garden Wisner maintains at the hotel. Signature cocktails include the Sakerinha, made with sake, sugar, pineapple and basil; the San Juan Sizzle, with Bacardi 8, Domaine de Canton, Cockburn Ruby Port and soda; and the Taurus 38 Special, made with Novo Fogo Silver organic Cachaca, lemon juice, Prosecco, and blueberry and sage syrup. Cocktails are priced from $7 to $11.

To develop the menu at Bar Rouge, Kimpton tapped Executive Chef Thomas Dunklin of the B&O American Brasserie in Baltimore – just named Maryland’s Best New Restaurant by the Restaurant Association of Maryland. Chef Dunklin’s bar menu features an expansive selection of shareable American small plates, ideal for pairing with a glass of wine or a cocktail. Guests can choose from a broad selection of fish, meat or vegetarian dishes in small or entrée portion sizes, or opt for plates of charcuterie, artisanal cheeses and sweets.

Small plates include Roasted Beet Carpaccio served with Goat Cheese, Pistachios and Creamy Mustard; Lamb Meatballs in a Roasted Red Pepper Puree with Sweet Peas and Feta; Hamachi Crudo with preserved lemon and green olives; and Bacon Wrapped Oysters with Sweet Pickle Aioli. Entrees include Slow Cooked Pork Ribs with a Pineapple Glaze and Spicy Cabbage Slaw; Seared Rockfish served over a Polenta Cake with Chard and Citrus Butter; and a classic Bistro Steak with Garlic Smashed Potatoes, Asparagus and Olive Butter. Small plates and snacks range from $4 to $12, and entrée size portions range from $12 to $20.

Bar Rouge is located at 1315 16th Street, N.W. The lounge is open from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for dinner daily, and from 5:00 p.m. to close for drinks.

Back in Nov. ’10 we learned that Saki was looking to change its alcohol license:

Expand the licensed premises to include the entire building at 2477 18th Street, N.W. This expansion will include the space at 2473 18th Street, N.W. which is currently occupied by District Lounge & Grille which will cease to operate after approval of the expansion. This expansion will add an additional 120 seats for dining space as well as create 25 seats for summer garden space.

Looks like that expansion has begun. Back in Sept. ’10 we judged Saki.

And in other coming and going news – I just spotted this coming soon sign for Turquoise Jewelry Boutique coming to the basement space at 2118 18th St, NW.
