1600 21st Street, NW

On Friday afternoon, I mentioned that Tryst Coffeehouse was opening up a 2nd location at the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle. They’re open for business today!

For folks that were wondering, you don’t have to pay museum admission to get into the cafe. And there is free wifi. They’ll operate with the same hours [Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm; Thursday 10 am-8:30 pm; Sunday 11 am-6 pm] as The Phillips Collection. In addition to sandwiches and pastries they’ll also have a bar.

And while the inside looks pretty sweet:

The huge outside courtyard is going to be the best part (unfortunately it was raining yesterday but you can see the potential):

More photos including the menu after the jump. (more…)

1837 1st St, NW

Big scuttlebutt for Bloomingdale this morning. I hear that two long term vacant spaces have finally been leased. The first one is the yellow building right next to Rustik at 1837 1st St, NW – I hear a Spanish Tapas restaurant will be coming into that space.

1822 1st St, NW

Perhaps more exciting is the scuttlebutt for the big yellow building at the corner of 1st and Seaton St, NW (1822 1st St, NW) that has long had massive potential. Well, I’m hearing it has finally been leased and an American Pub is on the way. It’s been tough to find out specifics but if either of these properties have finally been leased, it’ll be great news.

Oh yeah, I’m also hearing another restaurant is looking at a nearby space as well. Stay tuned…

Dear PoPville,

As a homeowner in, and resident of, the U Street corridor, I received a flier the other day from the organizers of the new civic association, the “Shaw-Dupont Citizen’s Alliance,” which is intent on imposing a five-year liquor licence moratorium on the Corridor. The new association defines its boundaries as being from 12th to 16th Streets and from S to U Streets, N.W. Their first meeting is TOMORROW night, at 7:00, at the Thurgood Marshall Center, which is located at 1842 12th Street. Here is a link to their website with the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting.

I already have communicated to them my own personal opinion on their proposed moratorium (I am strongly opposed), and I would urge that others let their views be known as well. Maybe I am wrong, but I do not believe that the majority of my neighbors want to see this happen.

3412 Connecticut Ave, NW

Yesterday we learned that Four Fields (formerly 4Ps) will be closing on June 23rd in Cleveland Park. A reader writes in with a bit more info:

“They are not planning on opening a McFadden’s in the location but rather a more upscale Irish Pub concept that they run in New York.”

The reader doesn’t think this will be a lightning fast turnaround so it could be many months before they open. In the meantime you still have over a month to reminisce at Four Fields located at 3412 Connecticut Ave, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

The owners extended the lease to the Four Fields through the end of June 2012. The latest info from the bar staff is that the 4 Fields will close on June 23rd, 2012.”

Back in Nov. 2011 we learned that the Four Fields (formerly 4Ps) Irish bar had their lease extended until March 2012 and could possibly stay open longer. Looks like the final date is June 23rd according to a reader.

Susie Taylor, President of the Cleveland Park Citizens Association writes on the Cleveland Park Listserv:

“Unfortunately the news about McFaddens is true. They have purchased the Alcoholic Beverage Control Administration (ABRA) license from the owner of Ireland’s Four Fields.”

In Aug. 2011 the owner of Four Fields confirmed he’d be closing:

“The requested increase in monthly demands will not make it economically feasible to remain at this location. It is my understanding that the building will be leased to a chain restaurant.”

More info on the new tenant and their concept as it becomes available. Should folks want to tip one last pint, I’ll be sure to remind folks of the Four Fields last day when it is officially announced.

Sixth Engine did a great job converting an old firehouse into a restaurant in Mt. Vernon Square. I just saw another great example up in Silver Spring called Fire Station 1 at 8131 Georgia Ave.

“The Fire Station 1 Restaurant and Brewing Company is proud to be locally owned and operated in the original location of the first firehouse in Silver Spring, MD. Retired firefighter Jeremy Gruber began his firefighting and EMS career at Fire Station 1 and nearly a quarter of a century later he’s the proud owner of the newly renovated family friendly Restaurant and event complex.”

More on the history of that firehouse here.

Makes passing the old firehouse on North Capitol Street that much more painful…

I’ve been wondering who will be coming to the vacant retail spots at 1730 M St, NW (just east of Connecticut Ave.) The one further east will be home to Oxford Deli. The owner says he hopes to open by the end of the month. Oxford Deli will only be open during the week.

Coming to the vacant space further east (next to the Edible Arrangements) is a new nightclub. Their liquor license application says:

“New Nightclub and Lounge offering live entertainment. Occasional catering services for corporate charity and private events. No Nude performances. Total occupancy load of 320, and total number of seats is 299. Number of Summer Garden seats is 21 and number of Sidewalk Café seats is 40.”
