“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to let you and the community know that apparently Wonderland Ballroom is no longer allowing dogs ANYWHERE on their premises.

I tried to sit outside the other night with my pup, as I have done hundreds of times, and the bouncer very sadly let me know that the health department had “cracked down” on them and they weren’t allowed to have dogs even in the outdoor seating area. He also told me that they said it was part of a “city-wide crackdown” on dogs – which scared me even more, but I wandered down to another patio and there was no issue.

I know Wonderland has been specifically such a dog-friendly place for the neighborhood, and many will be bummed as I am to hear this news.

I wouldn’t even know where to start but is there something we can do!?”

Unfortunately Wonderland confirms that:

“The health department said they got a complaint from a customer about dogs on the patio. They came by and left a flyer and said absolutely no animals on premise except for service animals.”

First, there is no God.

Second, thanks to all who messaged us.

From Cantina Marina’s Facebook:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the end of Cantina as we know it. Our last day of operation will be October 28, and then we’ll be gone until 2020-2021 with a new pier, a new coat of paint, and thankfully new bathrooms. It’s been a heck of a ride, and we’ll talk more about things later, but we hope to see you all soon.”

A reader reports:

The Heights was sold last Tuesday. Early word is that the new owner intends to turn the space into a sports bar. The inside will be redone. The bar will be removed and replaced with 30 self-serve beer taps. Much of the seating will be replaced with standing bar tables. Giant screen TVs will line the walls. Menu will be eclectic, to include pizza and crab hot pots.”

STAY TUNED.

I am moderately excited about Union Trust‘s opening this fall.

The liquor license placard says:

“New tavern, specializing in higher end spirits, draft beer, and possibly light pre-prepared snacks. Recorded music. Total Occupancy Load is 79.”

OK I lied, I’m out of my mind excited about their opening this fall.

STAY TUNED.

From Nanny’s:

“First things first: Nanny O’Briens is not closing its doors!

With our 25th anniversary just over the horizon in April 2018, we plan to continue operating on the Connecticut Avenue strip we’ve called home since 1993 with the same great burgers and pub food, large craft beer selection (and, of course, pints of Guinness), fun kids menu, and friendly service you expect from your neighborhood tavern.

However, things have been tough here. Over the past few years–and, in particular the past few months–as the face of Cleveland Park has changed and competition throughout DC has grown, foot traffic has gone down while the cost of rent, goods and labor have increased. This beloved neighborhood institution–owned by three Cleveland Park natives–is struggling to break even on some months.

We are now looking to you, our neighbors and friends, for support.

Starting at 12 noon this Thursday, August 31st, we will be offering a Thursday Neighborhood Discount of 20% off the bill for all our patrons who live in the 20008 and 20016 zip codes.
Now in the spirit of a rising tide lifting all boats, we reached out to our neighbors who will be running their own Thursday specials, including: (more…)

From an email:

“2 birds 1 stone (1401 S Street, NW), underground cocktail bar within Doi Moi, is celebrating its 4th birthday this Monday, August 28 with a cocktail-fueled anniversary bash from 7pm-midnight.

Bar Director Adam Bernbach will serve up some of his favorite festive cocktails — all only $6 all night — such as frozen Piña Coladas, Aperol Spritz punch, Watermelon punch and Dark & Stormys. The bar is usually closed on Mondays, so it’s an extra-special occasion! The birthday bash is free to attend and open to the public.”
