Back in October ’08 I asked about all the stores on 18th Street, NW for lease in Adams Morgan. This past weekend I was able to speak with a longtime Adams Morgan business owner, Lynn Skynear, who’s been in Adams Morgan for 20 years. Skynear is located at 2122 18th Street, NW.

First let’s talk about the plans for this space, which are pretty cool. As you can see the third floor is for lease and now there is a sign saying the first floor is for lease.

Ms. Skynear explained that in this economy small furniture stores are having a tough time and therefore one needs to be creative. And here’s the creativity:

Skynear will remain a part of this space on the second or third floors. But on the first floor Ms. Skynear is looking for a tenant to open a European style bakery and cafe with an outdoor seating area. Skynear explains, “you have to give folks more than one reason to come here”. And to fill out the second and third floors, Skynear would like to see a consortium of Skynear furniture along with potential partners including the following possible vendors – clothing, jewelery, and/or pottery. She envisions folks having a coffee and cake downstairs and then shopping upstairs.

Ms. Skynear also addressed the issue of the many storefronts for lease on 18th Street. The only way Adams Morgan will become a destination spot beyond nightlife, she believes, is with better public transportation. Specifically she would like to see one of the new Circulator buses coming down 18th Street. She believes this is the only way to prevent other small businesses from leaving the area. And the only way this will be possible is if the Mayor embraces the neighborhood. She left me with these words: “I’m hoping the Mayor will embrace the place in which he grew up in.”

So what do you guys think, do you like the idea of a bakery cafe on the first floor? And what are your thoughts on a Circulator bus coming to 18th Street?

Well this is super cool. I get a lot of emails from folks trying to get me to promote their products. So I was a little suspicious about this email from AllModern.com. Then I went to their site and was blown away. They’ve got an awesome selection of modern furniture, home accessories and lighting from pretty solid brands like Knoll, Blu Dot, Alessi, Blomus. Well, they were gracious enough to let me select a product to give away for one of my contests. As a self admitted lover of coffee and coffee spots I thought I’d give away this dope Alfi thermal carafe (obviously I had a price limit). I stupidly didn’t think to ask for something for myself so I may have to enter the contest as well…

Anyway, the contest will be open for two weeks. Take a photo of your favorite spot in DC for a morning cup of coffee. It can be a balcony, like I often feature, or a spot in your house, in a park, anywhere in DC. Send a couple of lines of text along with the photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com explaining why it’s your favorite. I’ll select three finalists and we’ll vote on a final winner.

Social is the restaurant opening up at 14th and Meridian. From time to time folks email me asking about job openings so I thought I’d post this from craigslist:

“Social” seeks an experienced and enthusiastic staff for an exciting new concept driven restaurant located at 14th Street and Meridian Place NW. Hiring for ALL HOURLY POSITIONS. Open interviews will be held on Tuesday, June 9th-Thursday, June 11th, @ 2:00pm-6:00pm”

Click the craigslist hyperlink above if you want to send a resume in.

And a bit further south on 14th Street, (above Miss Pixie’s), I received an email from Mid City Caffe saying their opening has been delayed. They originally announced in a press release a June 14th opening but they’re not going to make it. A new date has not yet been selected but I was told I’ll be notified when they have one.

U Street Cafe, formerly Mocha Hut, located on U Street between 13th and 14th will have its grand opening Tuesday, May 26th. I had a chance to talk with some of the folks behind the new cafe and I think you’ll be pretty happy. One of the the VP for Operations, Elise, told me that waffles will continue to be offered! The menu will also be expanded. In addition to the waffles there will also be 4-5 fresh soups, quiches, salads, pulled pork sandwiches and more. If you really like the food there will be a grab and go option of freshly made sandwiches. Their bread will be provided by Firehook bakery and the bagels will be provided by Bethesda Bagel.

There will be plenty of coffee options as well as a bigger selection of loose teas. Their coffee roaster is Orinoca located in Columbia, MD. In addition to tea and coffee there will also be a limited selection of beer and wine.

Occupancy inside will be 50 while there will also be four tables located on the patio.

They will still be offering free wifi and the space will be children/family friendly.

Grand opening is Tuesday May 26th at 6:30 am. Regular hours will be 6:30am – 8pm Mon. – Thurs, 6:30 – 11pm Fri., 7am – 11pm Sat., and 8am – 9pm on Sun.

As many folks know these are the same folks opening up a spot in Columbia Heights on Irving Street. That space is slated to open in late July/early August.

“Dear PoP,

Next to Garden District on S there’s a building that was a pupuseria until a couple of years ago. It’s being rehabbed and one of the workmen told me it’s going to be a “coffee bar”. Do you or your readers know anything about it?”

I hadn’t heard that. I walked by this weekend and the workers I spoke with weren’t sure about a coffee bar. Since there is already a coffee bar set to open nearby above Miss Pixie’s, I’m not sure it would be viable. Has anyone else heard anything about a coffee bar coming to this spot?

If people have been in withdrawal from Mocha Hut’s closing up at U Street between 13th and 14th, you are in for some relief soon.

I’m told U Street Cafe is planning on opening up May 14th!

And the owners are the same folks who will be opening up Tynan Coffee & Tea in Columbia Heights (next to Five Guys on Irving Street).

Tynan Coffee & Tea is looking to open up later this year in the Summer/Fall time frame. For more info on Tynan you can see the press release from Donatelli Development after the jump. (more…)

On Friday we learned that Qualia coffeeshop had opened at 3917 Georgia Ave. For those that didn’t have a chance to check them out I thought I’d show you what it looked like. The owner, Joel, told me that they’ll actually be only half time or closed most of this coming week but the grand opening will be announced soon. Not only does the place look great but I’m super happy to report that the coffee was delicious.
