Photojournalist Noah Devereaux actually contacted me. He was looking for renovations in progress to take pictures of. When he explained that he’s doing a photo project currently titled, “Gentrification”, I turned the tables on him and asked him to meet me so I could share about it here at PoP. So, over a weekday lunch in an otherwise empty Domku, I found out a little more about DC through the eyes of Noah Devereaux.

Whereas everybody has something to say when the topic of “gentrification” comes up, Noah’s observation is refreshing. Ed. Note perfect example from yesterday. It’s not an argument or a point of view, but a reflection of a moment in time for each viewer to experience subjectively. There is both a sense of narrative, as well as a documentary quality to the series.  Continues after the jump. (more…)

Back in the summer I saw a similar one on 18th Street. It’s surely the same artist. (I was tipped off by the fact that they both say STER.) I just noticed that a commenter had seen this one back when I first posted. This one is from 14th Street just south of U. It’s a bit high up on the pole so you might not notice it unless you’re looking up. Of course I’m pretty short so it’s all relative I guess…

I’ve showed this mural in various states of completion but this is the final version. Holy cow – it is sick. It seriously stopped me dead in my tracks and I’ve kinda seen it before. Amazing.

Check out the details – that is an actual mirror:

Mad props to artist Joel Bergner:

You can see the profile I did on this gallery back in March here. Word of the gallery moving spread last week.

Their Web site says:

“The Nevin Kelly Gallery takes a fresh look at contemporary art. It is our pledge to be a different kind of art gallery–from our warm and inviting environment to our focus on works of high technical, cultural and academic merit. Because of the owner’s extensive travels to Poland and elsewhere in Central Europe, the gallery has numerous works from top young artists in that region.”

The new location is 1400 Irving Street, NW, #132 in the Highland Park apartment building. I think this is great news for Columbia Heights. Do you think Columbia Heights will support a gallery like this?

I was walking past the former neat neighborhood find, Healing Arts Gallery, located at 1632 U Street and I noticed they have a sweet National Geographic photography exhibit going on.

Their flier says:

“Visions of Paradise

Where…or what…is heaven on earth? Nine National Geographic contemporary masters answer the
question in a new gallery show. From the exuberance of a coming-of-age ritual to the boldness of a
wild creature’s gaze to the pride in catching the Big Fish, these images offer an exquisite sense of place
as they reveal an intimate state of mind. Visions of Paradise, part of the FotoWeekDC photography
festival, features master shooters William Albert Allard, Jodi Cobb, David Doubilet, Beverly Joubert,
Michael Nichols, Paul Nicklen, Randy Olson, Joel Sartore, and Michael Yamashita.”

The photographs are amazing. I spoke with gallery director, Sandy Rossi, who mentioned that there is a special reception Friday Dec. 5th from 5:30-8pm when the National Geographic’s Directory of Photography will host a Q&A session.

Sweet. The exhibit runs until Jan. 2, 2009.

This exhibit is really fantastic. I highly recommend you check it out (and it’s free). I hadn’t even heard of Sid Chafetz before stumbling into this exhibit. As always the pictures do more justice than I can write.

The exhibit goes until Jan. 31. Anyone check it out yet?
