I’ve shown his art before in the vacant storefront at 1541 14th Street, NW (formerly the international bookstore.) But I had the chance to see the artist himself this last weekend. It turns out his friend is the owner of the space (it’s still for rent) and Gary suggested that he place some art there rather than keep the space barren. He will be there on the occasional Saturday, so if you see the door open be sure to check out the art and say hello.

Spotted this one at Columbia Heights Coffee. I can’t find his name in my notes. But he lived in the CH neighborhood. Def. a bit on the darker side but pretty impressive art.

One more angle after the jump. (more…)

I really liked this tree from the sculpture garden on the Mall. It was a Yoko Ono Exhibit where people placed their wishes on the tree. The one above seemed more sincere than one’s simply wishing for world peace, it says:
“Good SAT Scores, get into a good college, I wish that me and Nick will get to be good friends again, love, happiness, prosperity for all, a BMW would be nice too.”

This week’s selection is for Father’s Day coming up. The owner is Luis Gomez who got it done at Paradise Tattoo on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The tattoo is a portrait of his father who was a surgeon in the Colombian Army.
Ed. Note: I’m embarrassed to admit that when I saw it first out of the corner of my eye I thought it was of Nehru. But this is very cool too…
Often over-shadowed by the national museums, the DC art scene makes a spectacular roar in the form of a huge and intense month long arts festival known as Artomatic. Located this year literally on top of the Navy Yard Metro next to the new Nationals Stadium, the event features a staggering nine floors of artwork, over one thousand participating visual artists, as well as performers, workshops, and seminars. While the sheer volume of artwork is amazing, perhaps even more remarkable is the elaborate coordination, largely by artist volunteers, to secure space, manage registration and installation of all the artists, schedule staffing, handle marketing, a website, and a million other aspects. The philosophy is

Until last week I only passed these mosaics by car. But I always wondered what they were. Walking by I found half the answer. It was a sorta fundraiser called the hopscotch kids. Continues after the jump. (more…)

I think this one looks great. Do you consider this graffiti or art?

She got this tattoo in while stationed in Hawaii with the Navy. She wanted a tough looking pin up girl with the US Flag incorporated. The Chinese characters above translate into “Honor, Courage, and Commitment”.

Irvine Contemporary is located at 1412 14th Street, NW. It’s easy to walk by without realizing it’s an art gallery (as I had done many times) because there is a very unassuming glass front.

But it is well worth checking out. Currently there is a cool exhibit that has been extended to June 13th of works by Shawne Major.

You can see future exhibitions here. Well worth checking out!
