620 T St, NW

Community Day @ The Howard Theatre is this Monday, April 9th:

“On Monday, April 9th, come on down and breathe life into The Howard Theatre’s Rebirth. At 11:30am, we’ll kick things off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by live performances by Robert Thompson & The James Brown Experience Band, along with a host of other talents. Also, get a glimpse of The Howard Theatre’s magnificence, which will open its doors to the public for the first time in over 25 years.

For this special occasion, we’re closing down T Street to dedicate the recently installed sculpture of Duke Ellington and make way for fun and celebration. Hope to see you here at The Howard Theatre, on this Grand Reopening day!”

And last week a reader sent in some cell phone photos of the Duke Ellington sculpture going up in the plaza out front. I went back on Monday and my jaw promptly hit the ground. It looks amazing:

Remember when the building looked like this back in 2008:

Hard to believe this was a horse’s ass award nominee back in June 2009.

I’m loving all the images from the Hirshhorn. For those not familiar this is a work by artist Doug Aitken called Song 1:

“March 22, 2012 to May 13, 2012
Sunset to Midnight

For nearly eight weeks this spring, internationally renowned artist Doug Aitken (American, b. Redondo Beach, California, 1968; lives and works in Los Angeles and New York) will illuminate the entire facade of the Hirshhorn’s iconic building, transforming it into “liquid architecture” and an urban soundscape. Using eleven high-definition video projectors, Aitken will seamlessly blend imagery to envelop the Museum’s exterior, creating a work that redefines cinematic space. A bold commission that will enter the Hirshhorn’s permanent collection and enliven its public space, “SONG 1″ allows visitors to the National Mall a chance to witness the first-ever work of 360-degree convex-screen cinema.”

You can read the rest of the explanation from the Hirshhorn Website here.

Anyone check it out in person?

***** THE WAITING ROOM | BILL CRANDALL *****
The Waiting Room is a ten-year documentary series by DC photographer Bill Crandall. This long-awaited book is an insightful, intimate photographic study of a post-Soviet country often called ‘frozen in time’ and ‘the last dictatorship in Europe’. Yet the book explores themes of identity, culture, and everyday life, not politics.

Signed copies of The Waiting Room will be available. There will be a select print exhibition and projection of work from the book.

I hear that an art gallery and studio is coming to 1015 U St, NW home to the former Eaton’s Barber Shop. It’s been vacant for a bit so I really hope this is accurate. Plus it would be great to have a new art gallery!

1015 U Street is located right next door to the Lovely Frozen Yogurt spot which looks very close to opening.

Yesterday we learned that the Shakti Yoga space was coming up for lease at 1302 9th St, NW. It seems that is not the only space coming up for lease on the 1300 block of 9th St, NW. The Lamont Bishop Gallery space at 1314 9th St, NW is also coming up for lease. They have a new exhibition launching March 7th so it’s not clear when the space will be vacated. The landlord commented yesterday:

“They are 6 months in arrears in rent etc. and an eviction is forthcoming.”

1314 9th St, NW is located in front of Sundevich and next to Seasonal Pantry.
