“I am submitting this on behalf of our Peeps diorama team – directed by my daughter Ella. Ella describes it here:

My name is Ella. I’m twelve. I’ve loved art projects since I was little, particularly complicated design & building projects. My dad (George), brother (Sam), aunt (Jeanne) and I for years have loved peeps diorama contests- Washington Post, St Paul Pioneer Press. Each year we look forward to seeing them online. We’ve tried making peeps dioramas at home for a couple of year just for fun—and this year I decided we should really do it!

This fall was the first election I really paid attention to–partly because I loved the idea of a woman president. In the spirit of women power, I decided to make our diorama “Marching with My Peeps” modeled on the Women’s March (my dad was at the march in DC and my aunt went to the one in NYC). My aunt came to visit for a weekend this winter, and the four of us spent the weekend building our diorama.

I wanted each peep to be unique—reflecting different races, ages and issues people cared about. We spray-painted the peeps 5 skin tones. I sewed mini-pussy hats, designed outfits and made wheelchairs. We created many many signs based on actual ones from the March. I loved the wordplay—Peep Your Laws off My Body, Fight like a Chick, Peeps Grab Back, We the Peeple… as well as using the peep image on signs like We Shall Overcomb or Peeple R Peeple or Dissent is Patriotic. See how many peep images or word plays you can find in our diorama. We also included a CNN camera person, the stage with the three march organizers, the singer Milck and “I cant keep quiet” and tons of other details.

The weekend started making our diorama, people across the country protested Trump’s executive order about Muslims and immigrant, so we took a break from building and joined protesters at the airport (now one peep’s sign- #NoBanNoWall).”

Jess & Vy write:

“Similar to its human equivalent “WestWorld,” our amusement park serves as a destination where Peeps can live out their wildest fantasies. Our Peeps-like “hosts” aren’t filled with marshmallow fluff. Rather, they are fully functional Peepdroids meticulously designed by Delos’ Creative Director, Dr. “Rabbit” Ford, and his protégé, “Birdnard” Lowe. Our hosts are here to fulfill your every desire. They look forward to serving you. Exist free of rules, laws, or judgment. No impulse is taboo. In Peepstworld, you have the freedom to become who you’ve always wanted to be – or who you never knew you were.”

“This is a tribute to the ultimate confection: The Great British Baking Show.

We wanted to celebrate our favorite show by building a celebration cake! The layers are Styrofoam but are covered in fondant and buttercream frostings we made from scratch. We actually did some baking, the little pastries are made from Sculpey which you bake to harden.”

“Dear PoPville,

The National Museum of Women in the Arts is in the annual March-madness inspired #ArtMadness, in which art museums pick artworks to fill a bracket and then followers vote for their favorites. We’re in a competition with the Toledo Museum today, and our artist is a DC legend!

About Alma Thomas:

Celebrated abstract artist Alma Woodsey Thomas became Howard University’s first fine art graduate in 1921 and taught art at Shaw Junior High School for 35 years. She debuted her own painting at a Howard exhibition–at the age of 75!  She was a contemporary of Washington Color School painters like Sam Gilliam, Morris Louis, and Gene Davis, but her style is distinct.

An important role model for women, African Americans, and older artists, Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum and has exhibited at the White House three times. She was the first African American woman to have art displayed in public space at the White House, when Michelle Obama selected her work for the family dining room in 2015.

Her family home, where Thomas lived from 1907 to her death in 1978, is located in the Logan Circle neighborhood at 1530 15th Street and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Learn more about Alma and then vote for her today to advance to the next round in #ArtMadness! D.C. artists for the win!

Thanks to Victoria Pickering (an awesome photographer often featured in Photos from PoPville and elsewhere if the name looks familiar) for her interpretation of The PoP Peep Project. While not a diorama, unsurprisingly, I love them!! If you dig them as much as I do, check out all the others on her blog PeepCycle Inc..

As heir to the Washington Post Peeps contest, I take this competition very seriously though I allow exceptions for awesome attempts like these!  All entries should be emailed to [email protected] with ‘The PoP Peep Project’ in the subject line.
