The new building going up at 10th and G St, NW has really taken shape. It’s interesting that this corner now features three very different styles in contrast to the MLK Library (behind it) and the old church (across G St). You like the way the corner is looking?

I haven’t seen too many with a brick front. How would you rate this one – thumbs up or down? I usually feel like I can predict if people are gonna like or hate these but I have no idea about this one.

It’s not too far from the Florida Ave, NE Market.

I’ve always thought this was a peculiar home in Cleveland Park – I’m 92% sure that it is a single home (combined with the bungalow on the left). It now looks like there might be some renovations about to happen. Does anyone know what this arrow means? Do you think they’ll demo the structure to the right? Do you think they should?

This building just went up on the corner of Phelps and California St, NW. It also may have one of the more unusual names I’ve ever heard – Widow’s Mite Lofts. Their Web site says:

The Widow’s Mite Lofts are located in the Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood in northwest Washington. Now a peaceful enclave in the middle of metropolitan DC, the Kalorama area was primarily rural until the end of the 19th century. In 1795, Gustavus Scott, a city commissioner, purchased a portion of Anthony Holmead’s “Widow’s Mite” holdings and began development in the area. In 1807, a poet named Joel Barlow bought a property at 23rd and S Streets and renamed it “Kalorama”, after the Greek “fine view”. The Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood began to take shape around this property in the early 1880s as the area was subdivided for urban development and has become a popular choice among diplomats and senior government officials. In 1893 Congress ordered L’Enfant’s famous design for the city of Washington extended out to the rest of the District, but existing developments were exempted, which is why Kalorama is one of the few sections of DC that doesn’t follow the city’s grid system.

So what do you think of the building itself?

This is the first time I’ve heard bells ringing that didn’t come from a church. The Robert A. Taft memorial is located near Union Station at the intersection of First St and Louisiana Ave, NW. Anyone else heard of a memorial having bells before? It was ringing on Sat. afternoon around 3pm.

Also is this a memorial to the Senator Robert A Taft who opposed the New Deal?

I’ve always thought this building has terrific potential. It is the former Langston school (located on P St, NW just west of North Capitol) and apparently at some point had a Jewish affiliation:

Anyone know the story? I know across the street there are plans to renovate an old school into senior housing (I think senior housing?).

Next door the (old) Slater School building (now a daycare?) could use a bit of an upgrade as well:
