“Hi PoP,

Do you work? How in the world do you have time for this blog? So much fun, I love it.”

Dear Curious,

Thanks for the kind words.  I surprisingly get this question quite frequently so I thought I’d answer it once and for all.  Yes, I work a full time job.  No, I do not have a trust fund and walk around all day taking photos.  Yes, I do wish I had a trust fund.  But as you can see I am typing this at 11:29pm not because I am deranged, although I am, but because I work during the day.  That is also the reason I rarely respond to comments, although I’d like to.  Unfortunately, I am simply unable to respond during the day.  I have time for the blog because I have decided to sacrifice sleep.  But obviously I love doing it.  Thanks again for the kind words.

Best,

PoP

So tonight’s blogging or rather tonight’s web service is provided by the good folks at Looking Glass Lounge.  Looking Glass Lounge where the bartenders might seem surly but they’re quite nice once you get to know them.  They made a mean pulled pork sandwich ($9) tonight and Tues. Wed. and Thurs. you get a complimentary drink with an order of an entre.  So if my posts progressively make less sense this evening you’ll have to understand.  Anyway, how far does this power outage go?  It’s obviously out in major parts of Petworth but working at Looking Glass.  Is it working in Columbia Heights?  Mt. P?  The one nice thing I noticed about the outage was that everyone on my block were on their porches.  I love that.  I’d be there too, but damn it then you’d yell at me for not having any posts up tomorrow…

The happy hour was fantastic! Unfortunately my camera was broken so I couldn’t snap any photos. But I got to meet lots of great new folks. And an unbelievably nice reader, Jamie, has hooked me up with a working camera with a sweet zoom. So I’ll be good to go for next week. My best wishes go out to Aunt Rose.

Scoop of the night: Looking Glass Lounge will be hosting a Bacci Bocce Ball League every Wed. night in the near future so stay tuned. Thanks again to all who ventured out on this dreary Wed. evening.

Looking Glass Lounge, 3634 Georgia Ave., 7pm – late. Mojitos and happy hour prices all night. I’ll be the guy wearing the PoP t-shirt to his own his own PoP happy hour. And I’m cool with that. See you tonight.

I’ve been inspired by a comment from last week to call this happy hour “Crossing the Line of Decency”. So come and cross the line of decency with me and many of your neighbors from Petworth, Columbia Heights, Mt. Pleasant, Shaw and elsewhere. Looking Glass Lounge, of course, is located at 3634 Georgia Ave NW between Otis and Princeton. It is about a block away from the Petworth metro. General Manager, Dan Searing, has concocted some special mojitos for the event and happy hour prices will go all night long. I will be there at 7pm until at least midnight or until I cross the line of decency whichever comes first. All you t-shirt winners make sure to stop by so you can pick up a shirt. I also have plenty of extra t-shirts (of the classic variety) if anyone wants to pick one up for $10. See you Wed. the 21st.

So many good choices. It was extremely difficult to pick a winner. Thanks again to all who entered!

Like I said, there have been lots of incredible entries. Thanks to everyone who put the time, effort and creativity into making these. I will announce the winner on Friday. So if you feel strongly about one make sure to comment today. One more entry after the jump. (more…)

I have really loved all the entries but I’m really digging this one. You? This decision just got a whole lot tougher.

This is the first letter I’ve received that requires a statement from the ombudsman. Sweet. I assure you that the following letter is legit and I am publishing it in its entirety, exactly as I received it.

Subject line: “do you mean your blog to be comedy?”

“i read it to see if you can pick an uglier garden or house of the day then the last. you truly have no taste – sorry if this sounds rude but really you seem to think the worst good renovation or front door is amazing. you once picked a gate on the side of my house and said you thought it was great with something about it leading to some old lady drinking in the back. trust me it is way off from the truth and the most unattractive part of the house.”

Dear Sir or Madam,

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “For art to exist, for any sort of aesthetic activity to exist, a certain physiological precondition is indispensable: intoxication.” As I am frequently drunk, er intoxicated, this quote really resonated with me. But now on to your question. This blog is not meant to be comedy. It is meant to be a window upon my soul. Thus the doors. Common? Sure. Profound? Frequently. For a door can be a window, have you ever thought of that? Indeed.

I don’t recall the gate you reference nor an old lady drinking but I dare say Norman Rockwell himself could not paint a prettier picture. Let us remember the great words of the mighty Bob Dylan – “I define nothing. Not beauty, not patriotism. I take each thing as it is, without prior rules about what it should be.”

Warmly,
PoP
