Ike pulled out the victory with 51% of the vote. It was a tough fight with the lead going back and forth between Ike and Dr. Dre. Now for 2010 I’m going to assemble a panel of 5 judges to select the winner. The polls proved far too easily manipulated. But as I’ve said before, all the contestants were great and brought many smiles to PoPville. Now one of the nice things about being the editor of this blog is that it entitles me certain prerogatives. I don’t often use them but in this case I will. I have decided to make an editor’s pick – coolest pet in popville as well. And I’m happy to bestow the editor’s pick to Dr. Dre:

I know that may sound a bit weak but I can’t wait to see Dr. Dre on a t-shirt. So as Ike is the people’s choice – he will be featured on a t-shirt as the people’s choice for coolest pet in popville 2009. Dr. Dre will be featured as the editor’s choice for coolest pet in popville 2009. Now I am going to provide Ike’s owner with a free t-shirt. But I need to know how many shirts to order. Please specify if you are interested in an Ike or a Dre shirt.

I’m gonna be offline for the next few days so I apologize if I don’t get to your emails right away.

I apologize if any comments get stuck in holding (try not to use curse words this week!).  I’ll be sure to get to them as soon as possible.  I also apologize if I’m not able to reply to your emails right away but please keep your tips/photos coming.

Also, entries for the coolest pet in PoPville contest have been closed.  No more entries will be accepted at this time but it’s an annual contest so you can always enter next year…  Thanks to all who’ve entered (132)!

Recently there have been a number of comments that have crossed the line. From time to time I delete comments. It’s not often but if someone uses the “N” word, or curses out a user I will automatically delete it. It is no secret that I am taking PoP full time in November. My IT guy and I are currently working on developing PoP 2.0 for a November release. There will be lots of new features that I hope you’ll find useful. But the question has been raised about registration and I’d like your input. You see, personally, I hate registering. I just find it terribly annoying. Registering has pretty much killed the forum section. Having said that, the number of readers and commenters has grown (thankfully) to a size where I can’t monitor all comments in a timely manner. I certainly don’t want to discourage commenting. But I also don’t want to make this site a place for bigots. Normally, the community is pretty good and pretty quick about quashing those comments.

So for the PoP 2.0 version would you like to have a one time registration process or would you like me to occasionally delete racist comments combined with the community’s self policing?

It was awesome to see so many folks out. Folks from all over DC. It was great to see the Social folks as well. It’s nice to see businesses get involved in these types of events. The picture above is from just one of the pick up spots so we put a good dent in! But more importantly were all the folks from the neighborhood who saw us walking around. I know my little clean up group of three had lots of people thank us for our efforts. I think this is just as important as the actual clean up. So thanks again for all who made the effort to come out. Next month we should have a hundred people! For a little more than one hour it is a great statement to make! Next month is Mt. Pleasant – stay tuned for details.

Yesterday there was some discussion about who we are. I’ve also been asked this question a number of times. Allow me to share my vision. In PoPville we are indeed a diverse community. Diverse in many ways including age, race, sexual orientation, gender etc. We are also a group that embraces who we are. We know what we like and what we don’t like and are happy to debate it intelligently. We are sick of crime. We seek to build community. We volunteer. We hold our politicians accountable. We love food of all varieties. We like to know what development is going on in the city. We appreciate architecture. We are curious about real estate. You are among the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever “met”. (more…)
