The new Central State Hospital reflects Virginia’s focus on providing high-quality, recovery-based treatment in behavioral health. By prioritizing safety, flexibility, and dignity, Page’s design supports wellness and security with 252 beds, serving civil and maximum-security needs.

Building off Central’s centuries-old legacy, Page designed a cohesive facility to modernize in-patient care within a single campus. Natural and biophilic elements were integrated into every living space, providing users with outdoor views in each room. Double-height common rooms and ample glazing cultivate a warm and friendly environment.

An expansive entryway featuring ambient light and high ceilings offers a welcoming space, while small-group rooms provide open-concept areas that enhance interpersonal connections. The team pioneered a “three-tier” organization of psychiatric patient spaces, featuring five “Program Communities,” a collection of common areas and counseling rooms serving as an additional middle-ground option between the 18-to-28 patient living units and the two 100+ patient-treatment malls.

Keeping staff in mind, the team designed for passive observation by providing clear sightlines throughout patient spaces and to critical doors from defined observation points. Layouts allowing easy observation of historically problematic areas, like dining rooms, help minimize the risk of incidents. And generous corridor widths and ceiling heights reduce safety concerns while enhancing the feeling of wellbeing.

The campus’ safe outdoor spaces cultivate therapeutic recreational opportunities, offering a variety of amenities and diverse pursuits, from game-centered activities to more contemplative  courtyards with meditative gardens.

Hundreds of kids spend the holidays at Children’s National Hospital. This GivingTuesday, you can make an even bigger difference to bring them hope, healing and holiday magic.

Ace Hardware will generously match your gift, dollar for dollar, up to $30,000 through midnight on GivingTuesday, November 28.

Every donation will light up Dr. Bear, the hospital’s mascot, showing patients and families how much we care. As a nonprofit hospital, donations make a powerful difference to extend access to world-class pediatric care and advance groundbreaking research that leads to new treatments and cures.

Your support helps local kids like Naomi grow up stronger. When she was 4, a condition affecting the nerves in her spinal cord meant she couldn’t walk. Thanks to expert care, Naomi is back to doing what she loves — dancing hip hop, riding her bike and running track.

Give now to double your impact for kids like Naomi our community and make their holidays brighter.

Live on stage at the historic Capitol Hill theater through Dec. 17.

Folger Theatre has returned to its historic stage for the first time in more than three years and is welcoming audiences with The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s timeless story of transformation and forgiveness.

Director Tamilla Woodard — named one of 50 Women to Watch on Broadway — calls The Winter’s Tale Shakespeare’s love letter to the theatre. The play contains the magic and fantastical elements of a fairytale interwoven with an astonishing romance. It’s filled with emotional depth, extreme behavior, complex relationships — and an infamous bear in pursuit.

The Folger’s production features a talented cast including Antoinette Crowe-Legacy (Broadway’s Slave Play) and Hadi Tabbal (The Public Theater’s The Vagrant Trilogy), alongside D.C. favorites Drew Kopas, Cody Nickell, and Kate Eastwood Norris, as well as recent Howard University grad Kayleandra White. Visit folger.edu for videos and photos of the cast and production.

The Winter’s Tale runs through December 17, and tickets start at just $20.

Car owners in D.C. have enough to worry about, wasting your time in traffic just for a service appointment shouldn’t be one of those things. As temperatures drop and wild weather is predicted, it’s important to stay ahead of basic maintenance on your car.

Roda knows that taking care of your car can and should be simpler.

We pick-up, we service, we return. This is how it works, but first-time clients often include already baked-in requests when they book their first appointment (or sign-up to reserve their Cyber Monday VIP offer.) Questions like:

  • “Can you text me when you arrive?” Communication is first and foremost in the valet car care world. Customers receive booking confirmations both via email and by text, including tracking service when a valet is dispatched to pick-up (and return locations.)
  • “How much? This sounds expensive.” There is no upcharge for valet, even if you decline services. You can also drop your car off at our flagship service center in Rockville. Roda offers flat pricing on basics like oil changes, with complete digital estimates and line-by-line approval of all costs before the work is done.
  • “Do I have to stay at the same location for pick-up and return?” No! Pick-up and return locations can be different. Getting work done at home in the morning, then running errands that afternoon in another part of town? All you have to do is say so. Valet service means they meet you where you are

Check your battery, top-off fluids, and more with ease. Their Winter Special offers a $225 detail, wiper replacement, fluid top-off, comprehensive safety inspection PLUS 10% off services added to same visit.
