‘Tis the Season for BrewLights

Friends of the National Zoo’s hoppiest holiday event, BrewLights at ZooLights, is back December 12 for a night of unlimited craft beer.

Virginia Tech Adapts MBA Programs for Local Professionals

The working professionals who pursue the Arlington-based Executive MBA at Virginia Tech get a rich education in the fundamentals of business — accounting and finance, marketing, operations, ethics, communications and leadership.

But woven around foundation courses are “experiential modules” designed to accelerate development in four essential and current areas: business analytics, entrepreneurship and innovation, leadership and governance, and global business.

The hands-on experience of the integrated modules is meant to allow Executive MBA students to immediately put their learning into action. That’s the idea behind all of Virginia Tech’s MBA programs — giving working professionals the tools they need to advance their careers as they pursue an MBA.

“What we did at Virginia Tech a few years ago was to say that we really want to focus on the working professional — someone who wants to enhance their career or make a change in the direction of their career, but not at the expense of continuing to be a business professional,” says Pamplin College of Business Dean Robert Sumichrast. That allows those students to come into the classroom, he adds, “and use what they’ve learned as part of the experience of the MBA program.”

DC Circulator Celebrates the Holidays with Third Annual Winter Wonder Bus!

The third annual DC Circulator Winter Wonder Bus returns to the District of Columbia on Friday, November 29.

Each year during the holiday season, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) decorates a 44-foot DC Circulator electric bus with a festive bus wrap, ornaments and other holiday adornments. The theme of this year’s Winter Wonder Bus, “A Gingerbread Holiday” was selected by local riders via an interactive Twitter poll. The interior and exterior decor illustrates an enchanted tale of a gingerbread holiday celebration in the nation’s capital.

This year’s Winter Wonder Bus will rotate between all six DC Circulator routes and participate in multiple District-wide holiday events. For the second year, the DC Circulator will offer a special weekend evening shuttle to the annual ZooLights exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Lower Your Closing Costs with This Creative Title Insurance Hack

One of the largest closing costs a home buyer pays at settlement is the title insurance policy required by their mortgage lender. Title insurance protects the home buyer (and the lender) against any title claims by prior owners or lien holders.

But there is a way to save hundreds or even thousands of dollars off of the title insurance premium — and it doesn’t cost the home buyer a thing. When negotiating the purchase contract, buyers should ask the seller of the property for a copy of their title insurance policy. With it, a reduced title insurance reissue rate can be obtained.

Most buyers are not aware that they can get this significant savings simply by asking for it up front — the best part is that there is nothing else that the home buyer needs to do to qualify for it.

National Cathedral Offers Family Friendly Version of ‘Messiah’

For many in the Washington area, the holidays don’t begin until they sing along to the resounding and inspiring “Hallelujah Chorus” that ends the majestic “Messiah” by Handel. But at two-and-a-half hours long, families with younger children simply can’t see it through to the climactic ending without the fidgeting becoming distracting.

The thoughtful music-lovers at the Washington National Cathedral have solved the problem. On Saturday, December 7, at the family-friendly hour of noon, the Washington National Cathedral Choir and the Washington National Cathedral Orchestra, with four guest vocalists and conducted by Michael McCarthy, will offer an “abbreviated” performance of “Messiah,” consisting of just the familiar rousing highlights. Hallelujah, indeed!

Admission to “Handel’s Messiah Family Concert” range from $25 to $95, with $15 student tickets available. Be advised that this performance will likely sell out.

For those who want to enjoy the “Messiah” in its entirely, the same ensembles will perform the work on December 6 at 7:30 p.m. and December 7-8 at 4 p.m.
