Many may recall that I was super intrigued when the Lofstel opened up last January at 4115 8th Street. So I was super excited to hear about Karen’s adventures spending a night there. I have to say, it really does sound super cool.

I knew I was in for an interesting night the moment I stepped into the seemingly unremarkable rowhouse on a sleepy, non-descript street in Petworth. From the outside, the house looked welcoming, yet quiet, like any other rowhouse. White Christmas lights decorated the front porch, and a warm light peeped through behind patterned curtains that obscured the windows. Yet after ringing the doorbell and being ushered inside by a scruffy yet genial 20-something guy, I saw immediately that the rowhouse’s exterior was deceptive, providing little hint of the life within. A number of people have written me to inquire what was going on this weekend with that big white tent on Georgia Ave. Well I spoke with organizer, Shawn Spencer, who explained that it was a fundraiser for “Us Helping Us” a non profit that provides outreach, education and mental health services for those living with HIV or AIDS. I have to say Petworth definitely knows how to rock a fundraiser. There was great rap playing on the turntables during this cookout. As I was walking away, to my surprise, I had involuntarily started busting out some vintage PoP dance moves which I have no doubt caused much laughter to those driving south on Georgia Ave. I’m just glad, as a result, I didn’t cause any traffic accidents…

This is a super cool one from Georgia Ave. Not sure if you can tell but it actually takes up two sides of the building.

This is a bit random but for some reason it made me laugh so hard I nearly doubled over.  I think it also contributes nicely to the beautiful life.  Young girl to another:  “Girl, you need to get a fucking perm!”.  Beautiful.

Sweet mango cafe puts up a banner for a local candidate. Incidentally, I wonder if all the construction from the street improvement is going to effect their business? I certainly hope not and I’m pretty sure as long as that beautiful jerk chicken smoke continues to waft out the customers will keep coming, barriers or not.

They really love cats. That’s cool, I don’t judge. However, I’m not sure what’s going on in the corners. For some reason they look like cat heads a bit, like a council of cat elders of sorts. But now looking again, I don’t think they are cat heads. I think I may have gotten too much sun today…
