New Orleans Style.

This house is a beaut. I can’t tell if it will be residential or commercial or both. Doesn’t the windows in the front make it look like there will be some commercial as well? The brick is great though, yeah?

I don’t why but I thought this was a funny sign. I realize they are saying that just because the cafe is located in a gym doesn’t mean you have to be a member of the gym to enjoy the cafe. I guess it’s a good thing. So anyone from the community know if it is a good cafe. Good to know there is free wifi. Incidentally, the other sign said if you join now the summer is free. So anyone a member of Mint in Adams Morgan? Is this a good gym? Sign for the free summer membership after the jump. (more…)

I don’t mean to trivialize a stolen bike, I know it would piss the hell out of me. But this sign was found on 14th Street near the Black Cat and it says that the bikes were stolen in Georgetown. So why are they putting signs up on 14th Street? Do most stolen bikes end up around 14th Street? It just seemed a bit random to me.

After a lull in battles from the infamous car fiasco the squirrels have launched their Summer offensive on PoP headquarters. As I came home last night this squirrel was all sprawled out, just chilling. And daring me to do something. So I of course walked right up expecting him to flee the moment I got close. Ah, but these are a special breed of squirrel. They are fearless. This one scooted around the corner of the porch and as I followed this was the scene:

I am embarrassed to admit, but, I retreated. Damn that’s squirrels two – PoP zero.

This super cool spot is very unassuming from the outside but it is a really classy building inside and out. Located at 903 U Street, Project 4 Gallery is one of the few gallery’s in DC that hosts contemporary art. Inside there are two floors with a very open feel. I had a chance to chat with two of the gallery’s interns – Aisha and Kara. They told me that the gallery has been open for two years and is currently hosting an exhibition called the Sublime Landscape which opened May 31 and will run until July 19. Kara and Aisha remarked that the gallery often tends to pick interesting subjects that can be explored in great detail. The shows tend to rotate every six weeks. The gallery has four owners and the director is Anne Surak. The gallery is open Wed. – Fri. 2-6pm and Sat. noon – 6pm and by appointment. So if you are interested in contemporary art you should definitely stop by this gallery. Check out some photos of the Sublime Landscape exhibit after the jump. (more…)
Dear PoP,
I was hoping to hit you up for a little advice on a rental. We found one on Upshur street at Georgia AVE. It is a 4 bedroom townhouse that is not in the best shape. The pictures they sent showed a toilet in the backyard. They claim it will be cleaned up. I asked if they could reduce the rent because of the condition and they are willing to go to $1900. Do you think this is too much to pay for a dump in Petworth?
Thank you for any thoughts,
DC Bound
Dear DC Bound,
I think Upshur is a terrific street because you’d be right near a great little restaurant called Domku and you’d only be about a 5-10 minute walk to the metro. Also Upshur St. seems likely to become even more vibrant. An antique shop has just opened up and I believe the city also has some street improvement plans that will beautify Upshur. My one hesitation would be that Georgia Ave is a main thoroughfare and can be very noisy with both car and pedestrian traffic. Oh, I guess my second hesitation would be the toilet in the backyard that they sent in a photo. That’s pretty messed up. Unless there were flowers planted in the toilet… But as for the price $1900 seems very reasonable for a whole house. Obviously it will be very important to check out the condition of the house. But if it is in decent condition I’d say $1900 is market rate. Once again, if possible I’d make sure to visit and see if you feel comfortable living right next to a busy thoroughfare like Georgia Ave.
Cheers,
PoP
So what do you guys think – is $1900 reasonable for a 4 bedroom townhouse on Upshur and Georgia?

This scene felt very reminiscent of when I saw the hawk kill a pigeon. It was the same surreal scene that I glimpsed out of the corner of my eye. So my first thought was once again, what a bizarre spot for a lawn decoration, and damn is that realistic. I should add, I caught this sight at the tail end of my walkabout on Sat. when it was like 98 degrees, so I thought there was a significant possibility I was hallucinating. You see I had the bright idea of hydrating myself with one medium raspberry slush puppy over a five and half hour journey. But anyway, upon closer inspection I encountered a really sad scene. This was a six point buck (look closely under the bush) that was really a beautiful animal. It looked like he got stuck in the foliage and must of worn himself out to death trying to get free. Remember it was hot as hell. Very sad. I knocked on the door of the house to let them know but nobody answered. How the hell do you get a dead deer out of your yard anyway? Will the city do it? So for those who have an insatiable curiosity, like I, there is a closer shot I took when I was investigating after the jump. (more…)

Normally I like fluorescent neon lights but I think this one is kind of goofy given how awesome their mural is. Good sign or not? Mural after the jump. (more…)

The only thing missing is a mural on the wall to the left of the photo.
