When I was walking through Adams Morgan on Sat. I entered the residential section of Calvert St. and noticed an impromptu sort of yard sale. But the goods were all hand designed by Gretchen Cook of Fiber Arts Design. She sells “hip, urban crafts, clothing and jewelry with a contemporary aesthetic”. Keep your eyes peeled next time you are walking down Calvert towards Woodley Park from Adams Morgan. Some more photos of her goods after the jump. (more…)

So for some odd reason I went into a closet the other day that I never go into. I noticed that there was some paint cracking which I thought was odd. I went to investigate and it peeled right off like a warm piece of string cheese. I knew this was not a good sign. It turns out I had a small crack in my roof and slowly water was coming into a closet. Christ, I don’t know when I last went into that closet but it was a good year or so. What would of happened if I didn’t go into that closet for another year, I shudder to think about it. So the roof part was easy to fix. And by easy to fix, I mean it was easy for my contractor to fix it. But the closet, ah the closet. That took a bit more time. The contractor had to completely break it down, take out the plaster, and rebuild it with drywall. You see these old houses have plaster instead of drywall. Let me just say it is a messy business. It has taken the contractor over 12 hours and counting to fix. Crazy. You wake up one morning and the next thing you know you are $750 lighter in the pocket. This great book I’m reading about a house renovation (I plan on posting about it Monday when I finish it) says that home projects will be completed when you are dead or you sell the house. I understand what he means now. I’ve just spotted a new crack…

I like this one because of the advertiser’s description. A one bedroom “garden apartment” is available for rent in Mount Pleasant beginning July 1. What a romantic name for a home. I’ve generally referred to my various residences by the street name they were located, as has most of the people I know. Anyone have any original and/or quirkly names for their homes that don’t involve streets and numbers?

This place is high class–not only does it have the regular benefits the nicer places have–stainless steel appliances, central air, lots of light–but it comes with actual heated floors. As someone who lives in a poorly insulated house and spends the winter months in like, five layers of clothing, that sounds like quite the perk. Even beyond a perk–downright Jetsons-esque living.

The patio looks very lovely as well, though unfortunately from the angle doesn’t look very gardnesque. (I’m sure that’s something that can be remidied if the angle is actually what you get, however. Ah, garden apartment.) Rent is $1,300 plus utlities; the place is located at 18th and Kenyon. Rentals continue after the jump. (more…)

I thought we’d keep this week’s Friday question of the day a little bit on the lighter side. Although let me be clear for me personally this subject is of the utmost seriousness. So let me thank a reader for sending me the news that my beloved Budweiser may be purchased by a Belgian company. The story can be found here. So I have two questions, firstly, will this destroy Bud as we know it? Secondly, what is your favorite domestic beer if not Bud and why? I truly and honestly believe there is no rival to Bud. I’m not saying it’s my favorite beer I’m just saying it’s my favorite domestic beer (excluding microbrews). So for all those who love Belgian beers will this change your opinion of Bud? While we are on the topic, what’s the best Belgian beer out there?

“Hi PoP,

Do you work? How in the world do you have time for this blog? So much fun, I love it.”

Dear Curious,

Thanks for the kind words.  I surprisingly get this question quite frequently so I thought I’d answer it once and for all.  Yes, I work a full time job.  No, I do not have a trust fund and walk around all day taking photos.  Yes, I do wish I had a trust fund.  But as you can see I am typing this at 11:29pm not because I am deranged, although I am, but because I work during the day.  That is also the reason I rarely respond to comments, although I’d like to.  Unfortunately, I am simply unable to respond during the day.  I have time for the blog because I have decided to sacrifice sleep.  But obviously I love doing it.  Thanks again for the kind words.

Best,

PoP

It may be under contract according to this listing but still is this a good deal or not?

what is this statement saying? This is just wrong.

I was out to dinner tonight and apparently my house alarm went off and I missed the call from the alarm company.  Well, one neighbor called my cell phone and two others came up to me when I came home to ask if everything was alright.  This is what I mean when I say that people watch each other’s backs here.  It’s a damn good feeling.  For the record it was a phantom alarm, whatever that means.
