Don’t know how I missed this but there was a great story last week in Bisnow reporting that the new Ben’s Chili Bowl project will be called Ben’s Next Door. They say:

“Brothers Kamal and Nizam Ali don’t want to change the original Bowl, which was opened by their parents, Ben and Virginia in August ’58. The 1213 U Street, NW, eatery is staying the same, but the bros will be opening Ben’s Next Door, where patrons “can finally get a chili dog and a beer.” They say the new space, coming in August, will be the “Bowl version of a bar” and offer a more upscale ambiance than the original.”

This is super cool. So from the picture above do you think they’ll be ready by August. Do you think an upscale version of Ben’s with a bar will work?

Located at 3011 13th Street, NW this one is a “brand new custom built home brought to you by Leyla Phelan and Evers & Co.”. The flier says, “3 luxurious levels, meticulously renovated…4 bedrooms, 3 spa-like baths, a powder room, open floor plan, parking and a palatial outdoor roof deck.” Holy cow a palatial outdoor roof deck on 13th Street sounds pretty fresh. And I found the photos online here. Pretty sick. I think we may have a winner here. Of course it’s still way out of my league but it’s nice to see something this dope on 13th Street below a million. The price is $824,500. So good deal or not?

Didn’t Red Rocks used to have regular tables in the outdoor area? I wonder if they were influenced by Wonderland. What do you think, do you prefer picnic tables to proper tables? I can appreciate picnic tables but I think when I’m out to eat a meal I prefer to have a back on my chair. What about you guys?

What do you think of the brick on the first floor and vinyl(?) up top? Looks like they may have also been able to fit more windows in up top too, yeah?

What’s the word here? This store has always stuck out on U Street for obvious reasons. It seems deserted now. Any patrons know the scoop?

We’ve discussed this condo a few times in the past as it switched from auction to rental and back again. I just noticed that there are some numbers on the doors now. That’s a good sign. But I still think they are a bit stark. So what do you think, is this door sacrificing aesthetics for security a bit too much?
