Remember the super cool new addition to 11th Street? Bloombars located at 3222 11th Street (next to Wonderland) gave us a taste of sweetness before closing their doors. Well, if you missed it last time be sure to catch them this time. It is free (donations accepted) and there is a super cool vibe. You can read about last time here. And if you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of famed WJLA anchor Maureen Bunyan.

Bloombars describes the featured singers:

“Kissey Asplund Profile:

Crowned an electro-soul funk queen by legendary BBC RadioOne DJ Giles Peterson, Kissey was one of just 20 of his 2008 WorldwideWinners. Since the release of her debut album, Plethora, this native of Sweden with Caribbean roots has been on an odyssey to funkafy the globe with her soulful vocals over a plethora of futuristic funky beats created by some of the hottest producer/DJs in Europe and the US. At her first Washington, DC appearance, Kissey is poised to continue her early bloom at the appropriately named BloomBars.

Shantell Martin Profile:

With Jamaican roots, Shantell Martin based herself in Tokyo a few years ago, where she found her art and illustration transcended the luminous light from a projector, the energy of live music, and what appears to be an interpretation of a musician’s aura on a screen serving as the stage backdrop. The result pushes the boundaries of live art as the audience is treated to not only the performance onstage, but the creation of performance art like nothing you’ve ever experienced.

From DC Dude: “Bad news for all you San Marco fans.  I spoke to the owner last night and he says he is retiring and selling the place.  Saturday night will be their last night in operation.  Better get yourselves down there for one last taste before the lights go out for good.”

Last chance to check out San Marco! Very sad news if this turns out to be true. Best of luck to the owner in retirement. Can anyone confirm the news?

UPDATE:  Sadly, it is true.  I just spoke with the owner who confirmed Sat. night will be the last service of San Marco.  He did, however, mention that the reason why it took them so long to sell was because he wanted to make sure the spot remained a neighborhood restaurant.  And that it will.  It is set to become a Napalese Italian restaurant that will be remodeled and hopes to reopen in September.  More news as it becomes available.  But for those who love San Marco – send your best wishes in person or in the comments as the owner and his wife are heading for a well deserved retirement.

So apparently is Pottery Barn. Only they call them “Rustic Wood Accents”. Check out the photo from the catalog in the upper right corner. Those look strikingly like tree stumps to me, yeah? The catalog says: “The rustic lines of our reclaimed-wood accents are hewn from the trunks of Argentinian cypress trees that have died of natural causes. They’ve been smoothed with a natural water-based finish to bring out their inherent raw character.” And they only cost $199 for short ones (18″) or $249 for tall ones (24″).

“…died of natural causes…” that is too good. J.Peterman would be proud.

Does this apartment remind anyone else of the Starship Enterprise? This rental is located in Columbia Heights, which surprised me a bit–I’d expect such an innovative design more in Adams Morgan. But it’s evidence of the gentrification that’s taking place–these are the Park Triangle lofts right across from DC USA.

$2,488 for a two bedroom, two bath on 14th and Kenyon. What do you all think? Maybe it’s just that I’m used to the Columbia Heights of the past–I’ve been in the area for four years–but it’s almost hard for me to believe when looking at the pictures that this is my neighborhood. These are exciting times for sure. More rentals after the jump. (more…)

Now that I’ve got this fancy poll thing down I thought I’d ask this question once and for all. I’ve been getting a number of emails from folks who are concerned that crime is increasing in the summer months. Here is the last post written on the subject. Obviously your answer is based on your own comfort level and may vary a bit depending on what neighborhood you live in but it should capture the basic sentiment on the topic. So the Friday question of the day is how late will you walk home (for the purpose of this poll let’s say alone)?

If you haven’t visited Chix, located on 11th St just north of U, you have no more excuses. On Saturday you’ll be able to find:

“two organic wines (one red and one white) from the Chilean Emiliana Natura line (http://www.emiliana.cl/filiales_in/filiales.html), and we will have two organic beers from Clipper City (http://www.ccbeer.com/beerlist/Oxford+Organic+Ales). In addition, we will be serving other Chilean and Argentine wines, the Mexican beer Tecate, and a couple of other Clipper City brews.”

Nice! I love Tecate.

This building at 1527 12th Street has a sign that says First Genesis Baptist Church. Although a neighbor living near by said that he believes the building is vacant. Lots of potential to this building, yeah? Anyone know if the church still owns it?

From Councilmember Jim Graham:

Today the Council approved the land swap between the Central Union Mission and the District involving a vacant parcel of land on lower Georgia Avenue and the old Gales School, downtown.

The Central Union Mission will relocate its homeless services program to the Gales School. This approval opens the way for much-needed, mixed-use, mixed-income development on the 3500 Block of Georgia Avenue.

This is exciting news for residents of the lower Georgia Avenue neighborhoods who have worked hard to revitalize the Georgia Avenue corridor with expanded retail and residential opportunities. With your support, we have moved a step closer to this goal.”
