“Dear PoPville,
I live on the corner of 13th and Taylor Streets, NW and have noticed some construction activity at an old, abandoned auto shop across the street from me. I believe that the address would be 4100 13th Street, NW.
Any idea what this might be or where I could possibly find out? The whole neighborhood has been watching this site for some time, hoping that we may get some kind of a coffee shop or small eatery.”

I think this was the first ever house of the day I featured a long time ago when I was still using the camera phone. So, I wanted to make sure I captured it in its proper glory. The wrap around porch is sick. Still one of my favorites. (8th and Varnum)
Tina, Karen and Julian have been fantastic contributors and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. However, as PoP continues to expand into new neighborhoods I think we would all benefit from a few new folks. Basically I’m looking for one person from Adams Morgan and one from Capitol Hill or H Street NE. I’m also looking for someone who is obsessed with real estate. Your commitment would be one post a week. If you’re interested please email me directly at [email protected]
Thanks.

Ed. note: I’m going to milk this Maureen Bunyan photo for as long as possible.

The Makepeace Brothers – With an unclassifiable eclectic mix of bluegrass, jazz, Brazilian, African world rhythms and Celtic, their sounds are as worldly as their messages. Just ask the thousands of Jason Mraz’ fans they played for during the “Music Magic and Make Peace” tour. You have got to check a song on their site: www.myspace.com/
BloomBars – Don’t be surprised if you haven’t caught word. BloomBars is Columbia Heights’ new decidedly underground, spontaneous and inspirational space for local and global art, music and film you more than likely haven’t seen or heard. It’s raw. It’s organic, and slowly rising from a seed–offering an opportunity for guests to say, “I watched it grow when it looked like it was going to be a weed.” And did we mention that it’s free? Well, it’d be nice if you threw in a $5 donation to keep the lights on. Sneak a peak: www.bloombars.com (vids are up).
Suggested Donation: $5.00 (supports the venue and the musicians)
Sweet! From a listserv:

This apartment looks like it has an interesting mix of zen: what looks like bamboo reeds in the shower (just for appearances or does they have functionality?), and steam punk: check out the exposed ducts in the ceiling.
I’m also mesmerized by the stairs–how cool are they? I thought the coolest thing you could ever do with staircases was spiral them but here we have a new contender for the prize. They must have a really strong support–but don’t they look like they’re floating? Led Zeppelin could write a song about these stairs.

I also for some reason really like it that the only decorations shown are bins of fruit. It’s spartan and healthy to boot.
$4,900 for a three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath with a loft in Columbia Heights on 13th and Lamont. (The master bedroom includes the loft.) The outdoor space is large, with a huge backyard and a two level deck. Also private parking. Perks for sure but this place is totally worth it for the ducts and stairs alone. Rentals continue after the jump. (more…)

I got all depressed over the street harassment and the schools post so I thought it was time for a lighter question of the day. The post about the death of the cassette tape got me thinking. What was the first cassette I ever owned? Then I thought what was the first cd I’ve ever owned? And finally I thought about the first concert I ever went to. And I’m dying to know your answers.
So first cassette I owned – Michael Jackson’s Thriller
First cd I owned was U2 Joshua Tree
First concert I ever went to was Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet Tour – 1986. Oh yeah!
So what was the first cassette, cd and concert you owned/went to?
