From a reader:

“Glam Racket is a new dance party happening at Mayorga Lounge. As of now the upcoming dates are this Saturday the 16th and the 30th. It’s 21+ and free. The music is a fun, quirky mix of hip hop, indie, pop, electronic, and pretty much anything you can dance to.

I’ve attached a flyer, and people can get free downloads at: http://www.zshare.net/audio/15366741c64bcfbb/ or www.djdocrok.com. We’re also giving away free CDs (and maybe cupcakes)!”

Think Mayorga is a good spot to host a party like this?

Well this is sweet! Someone mentioned it in the comments last week and I’d actually never checked it out. (Julian may do a more detailed post later on put I wanted to get something up quick so people could take advantage of it.) Located on the 2800 block of Georgia Ave. the pool is open 1pm-8pm on weekdays (closed on Thursday) and 12-6pm on weekends. It is a huge pool and people seemed to be having a blast. So if you’re looking to cool off in August this seems like a great option. Anyone a regular? Tennis courts after the jump. (more…)

PoP:

I am happy to report that the lost cocker spaniel, Coco, has been reunited with his relieved owners. Please convey my appreciation and gratitude to all your readers. Having grown a little jaded at the big city life, I really was amazed and touched by the outpouring of support and tips from a mere lost dog notice. Special thanks goes to Ms. M, who called and generously offered her time and assistance in distributing flyers and who was instrumental in locating the owners. Thanks to Parkwood for the spot-on tip, Julie for her offer to foster, and basically all your readers for showing me what a wonderful little community we have here. I’ve lived in Petworth for less than a year, and this experience has shown me I made the right decision in moving to this part of town!!!

Do not be deceived. Dollar Star, at 3219 Mount Pleasant Street is no Dollar Store. The Mount Pleasant Main Street Business Directory (yes, this exists and I own it) bills it as “a mini-big box department store.” I am not sure what the owners bill it as, but in the 30 minutes I spent wandering the aisles I found only 4 items that sold for one dollar; bleach, rubbing alcohol, single rolls of toilet paper, and some Spiderman pins.

Dollar store or not, this place is totally insane and filled with all kinds of crazy junk. I read a review on Yelp that said places like this are “amusing to look through, but contain little of value.” I beg to differ. Where else can you find anything quite like this!?!

Story continues after the jump. (more…)

This is a very interesting offering located at 1740 New Jersey Avenue between S and Rhode Island, NW. The flier says:

“A Very Rare Offering — Originally a Doctor’s office and residence. First level offers a 3 room suite plus bath off the main living area. Some recent improvements made while still offering you a palate in which to create your ideal home. Tax records indicate approx 5632 sq ft.”

Lots of interior photos at the Red Fin Web site here.

The price is $799,900. It’s been on the market for 319 days. So good deal or not?

You know the rules – add your caption in the comments section and the best one wins a t-shirt or free beer. (Odentex shoot me an email when you’d like to claim your beer from last weeks victory). This week’s winner announced Friday.

For the curious I have another angle plus a photo a reader sent in when the bumper was in the middle of the Columbia Heights plaza. (more…)

Well, he didn’t go down but he looked like he might. This was pretty random as he was by himself outside a church on 16th Street. But how can you not love bag pipers?

On Friday night DJ Gavin will be performing at the Looking Glass Lounge. Do you think this will infuse some life into the LGL? Good idea or bad idea?

Anyone know if there are plans to refurbish and reopen this theater? I imagine it was quite grand back in the day. It’s located at 600 block of T Street, NW near Florida. (more…)
