Dope sky for sure. And check the super cool tall grass to the right.

I guess it might have been converted to condos but I still think it’s pretty fresh.

“My husband spotted this car on Vermont Ave. and made me walk down to see it. It was a light blue demo-derby-looking car with face on the hood and a big pink handle bar moustache covering the hood and front corner panels. The name of the car one side is “Denada #7” and “Stache #7″ on the other side.”

Another angle after the jump. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for the heads up. Film starts at 9pm on Georgia Ave. just north of Morton.

“Come enjoy a walk-in movie with popcorn and sweet tea! We’ll be projecting the film onto the blank white wall of an abandoned house and discussing it in the parking lot of the grocery store right next door.”

Super cool. What ever your politics are Persepolis is a great film and it’s even cooler to catch it outdoors!

Here’s some new construction on H Street behind Union Station. I have to say I think it looks phenomenal. I like how they built around the existing structure. I think it blends quite nicely. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

Looks like they have a great outdoor dining area here. What’s the scoop here? Is this a brunch place, a restaurant, a bar or all of the above? What’s the scene? Is it high falutin? How’s the food? Anyone strongly recommend it?

So here’s the scoop on the Saturday night shooting at 14th and Fairmont from the Columbia Heights community meeting last night. The investigation into what happened is still ongoing, and thus not all information could be released, but it appears the shoot out involved two crews. Two individuals, both in their twenties, were apprehended at the scene and have been charged. They were both on foot—rumors of a car being involved are unsubstantiated. Police are also looking into an additional person as possibly being involved—a lot of evidence has been recovered that they’re following up on.

There was a problem with crowd control as and after the two individuals were arrested, and a few friends and family members of the perps did attack the police apparently in protest or to prevent the suspects from being taken away. The four people who were involved in that attack were arrested, and one of those people had a baseball bat. There was also a problem in terms of controlling the surrounding area—police had to prevent several people from returning home while they secured the area and it seems there was a bit of a pandemonium for a while.

Also, and this is very interesting, apparently members of a private security firm that works the Faircliff Plaza East at 1350 Fairmont St were the first on the scene.

Police have been targeting the areas near where the shooting occurred, and it’s comforting to know that the security firm that apprehended the suspects is there every Saturday night. But violent crime has been up in the neighborhood in the past few weeks. I know it puts me, at least, on edge.

Story and illustrations by Julian. The following is part 2 of a series detailing the experiences and travails of a server in our fine city. Part 1 can be read here.

The Island

Like most restaurants, the staff typically hangs out long after the shift is over. I began feeling like the Gollum of the restaurant, there for the gold and not much else. Seeking my angle in, I strategically eased myself into the lives of the staff without making it seem too obvious.

Like myself, many of the people at the restaurant were already in committed relationships. The Princess and her Prince were engaged and lived close by, and were notorious for hosting many after-hour parties. “Burt” had a girlfriend who occasionally came in to have dinner. Also coupled were “Brandon” and “Tiffany,” two bartenders who had been committed for years.
My strategy was clear – ask people about their favorite topic: their personal lives. I started questioning about their relationships and began to serve as the unofficial love counselor for anyone lusting after a fellow co-worker. It was entertaining and it was fun, but it was also somewhat predictable.

You see, I have this theory called “the island.” Have you ever devoted so much time to a job that you began to feel as though you and your coworkers were stranded on a deserted island? Almost instantaneously, crushes a-la High School Musical begin popping up everywhere, between people who may or may not have found each other attractive otherwise.
Two new servers landed on the island about a month after I did. “Mandy” was from the same neck of the woods as I was and we immediately bonded over a common dialect (“hella” and “jankie,” anyone?). “Cole” was also from California, good-looking, and with a personality that made people want to be around him. Michael, the lead server, who was quickly becoming one of my better friends, took a liking to Cole. Story continues after the jump. (more…)
