Love how this old one, St. Patrick’s, “built around 1792” sits right next to a modern office building. Plaque after the jump. (more…)

Didn’t actually see this tattoo in person but found it on flickr when I was looking for a proper Paul Newman tribute. Two birds, yeah?

I thought this was interesting. A house that seems to be getting a facelift has plywood over the front. Isn’t this where the Tyvek (or Tyvek alternative) is supposed to go?

Seriously though, is it common to use plywood in this capacity?

Kilimanjaro Nightclub DC
The area around California/Florida and 18th Street has been transformed over the past couple of years.

Where once there was once just a dilapidated building on an oddly shaped lot, there is now Mint Fitness, street-wear retailers Stussy and partner-stores Commonwealth & For the Greater Good, home furnishings from And Beige, confectioners Locolat, Urban Escape Salon and the ever popular Rita’s Iced Custard.

A store-front over the road was also recently refurbished and is now home to a neighborhood grocery. Meanwhile, barbershop par excellence, the classic “Eddie’s Hair Creations” is still going strong. They have original barber chairs that swing back to a horizontal position – almost like those at the dentist and a vacuum cleaner contraption to suck up stray hairs from your scalp and the back of your neck.

Kilimanjaro: As It Used to Be
Although the building sat empty for many years, this now-revived space used to be home what Kinuthia Macharia, a Sociology professor at American University described as the “most famous African club in North America in the 1980s until the early 90s,” – the Kilimanjaro ClubStory continues after the jump.

Full sized washer/dryer off master bedroom in separate laundry room for extra storage. Absolutely breathtaking space to live in and entertain guests.”

More info and some pretty fresh pictures can be found here. This is a pretty interesting property, make sure you check out the photos. So for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom at this location do you think $460,000 is a good deal or not? I’m also curious to know what you think about the home itself?

From a reader:

“I know that between here, and the Columbia Heights News forum a lot of people have asked what’s going on with Royal Blue – the supposed to be Mediterranean place next to The Heights on 14th Street in Columbia Heights. I was surprised that no one seems to have mentioned that the build out of the space has commenced full steam this week, with interior walls all framed, and ready for drywall.”

I had been waiting all month to go to Oktoberfest at the National Harbor, MD this past Saturday, when it was finally time to go the weather didn’t sound promising. The website said the event would take place rain or shine so we were excited anways. We met at a friend’s house and got dressed, that’s right, some of us dressed up in costume! (We were not the only ones)

We then headed out to the event around 1pm and got in the Will Call line to pick up our tickets. We were given bracelets and those of us who dressed up got a few extra beer tokens. The next line was to pick up our beerfest mugs and the rest of our tokens. We then headed to the main tent passing tons of seating and a live band playing German music. In the tents were venders selling jewelry, stines, wooden kegs, German foods and beer. 1 token would fill a 1/3 of your mug and 3 would top it off. Some vendors were very generous with these fill lines and others were very stingy. My favorite beer was a Sarnac Pomagranite Wheat beer. They offered a bunch of German beers as well as a couple of Irish beers and domestics. (I wish I had, had the foresight to take pictures of the signs that said what beers were at which stands so I could relay the offerings to you now, but unfortunately I was too drunk) On the other side of the main tent there was a stage with a guy playing your standard mix of American music with some of the party goers dancing on stage behind him.

Food offerings were brats with krout, pulled pork sandwiches, crab cakes, potato pancakes as well as cheeses, nuts and funnel cakes. My friend Erin and I decided to split a Chesapeake brat and a pulled pork sandwich, both were excellent! Another friend had the crab cake and said it was excellent! The funnel cake was also very tasty.

The weather was very humid with scatters of very light sprinklings here and there. At one point the sun came out and it was apparently pretty strong as I now have tan lines from the puffy sleeves on the beer girl costume I wore. The turn out was pretty good, although I had expected more people to show. I think the weather earlier in the day scared a lot of people off. This was also the National Harbor’s first year to host Oktoberfest so there were a few things that could have been better…they started running out of beer and brats around 2pm (the event ran til 8pm). We were a little disappointed with that, but all in all we had a great time and we willl probably go again next year. I think I would def recommend Oktoberfest at the National Harbor to anyone looking for a fun day, but definitely buy your tickets online for the cheaper price and be sure to hit up your beer selections and food earlier rather than later. If I had to give this a grade I would say B- More photos after the jump. (more…)
