I think this is some nice new construction. Thumbs up or down? After the jump check out a potentially interesting renovation. (more…)

Located between 11th & 13th Streets on Kenyon St. NW

At Harriet Tubman Elementary School

I think this is going to be a really good time. I’d like to highlight one event though. At 1:45-2:00 There is the Columbia Heights Cupcake Eating Contest sponsored by Sticky Finger’s Bakery and I’ve been told Council Member Jim Graham will be a participant!

Bloombars is also having a fundraiser Sat. night:

“To Benefit Haitian Hurricane Victims”

Start Time: Saturday, October 4 at 8:00pm
End Time: Sunday, October 5 at 1:00am
Where: Bloombars on 11th Street just north of Wonderland

All the other details and itinerary after the jump. (more…)

This has been a week of good deal or not previously featured on PoP. This particular condo at 2128 11th Street was featured in a judging buildings post. People seemed to like the building so when I saw a condo for sale I thought it’d be interesting to see if you thought it was a good deal. The flier says:

“MUST SEE, UNIQUE PROPERTY! Clean lines and open flow are emphasized in this bright unit with window walls in the Living and Dining rooms. Large Master Bath features 2 sinks, tub and shower. Bamboo floors, stainless appliances, granite and marble finishes. Large private balcony with a panoramic view. Parking included, two blocks to U Street metro.”

More photos and info found here.

So in this location, in this building, is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom for $635,000 a good deal or not?

There are many fans of the Rib Pit on 14th Street in Columbia Heights. But we’ve never discussed where to find the best bbq in the city. I think my favorite is Kenny’s (pictured above) located on Maryland Ave. near Capitol Hill. So where is the best bbq you’ve had in the city?

Kenny’s has the bonus of a pretty sweet city sign:

Since last Friday’s favorite book FQOTD was so popular I feel obliged to ask the natural follow up. This post will be invaluable to me as I’m about to set up a netflix account for the very first time. So the Friday Question of the Day is: What is your all time favorite movie. (Please limit your responses to three).

Mine are (in no particular order) Cool Hand Luke, Empire of the Sun, Big Lebowski.

Your turn.

Remind your elderly neighbors to collect their tax rebates! The number one zip code in DC for unclaimed payments is 20011 – Petworth, with almost 1500 total possible outstanding payment opportunities. The total amount unclaimed for this zip is $437,700.

From a reader:

“Remember those tax rebate checks we all were entitled to get earlier this year? A national non-profit organization (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities) has issued a report listing the number of unclaimed economic stimulus checks by State (and DC) and zip code. Out of curiousity, I looked it up. Interestingly, the number one zip code in DC for unclaimed payments is 20011 – Petworth, with almost 1500 total possible outstanding payment opportunities.. The total amount unclaimed for this zip is $437,700. The link for this is: http://www.cbpp.org/states/7-28-08stim-fact-dc.pdf

Many of those thought not to have filed are seniors, the disabled and disabled veterans. The deadline to claim the money is October 15, and the IRS commissioner is calling on folks to inquire with friends, family and neighbors to ensure that they have filed for the money they are entitled to. So, perhaps in the vein of today’s “looking out for your neighbor/fellow citizen” post, maybe you can urge readers to check with their neighbors, particularly the elderly, and make sure they have applied for this.”

Surely Frederick Douglass should have a museum. No doubt. I’m just questioning the need for a “Hall of Fame For Caring Americans”. C’mon, we Americans are better than this…

K’Naan – Kicked Pushed

From the National Geographic Web site:”As a child growing up in war-torn Somalia, hip-hop artist K’NAAN saw more violence and tougher streets than any gangster rapper could imagine. Now, in North America, he has established himself as a voice for change, a peacemaker, and a cultural bridge between the developing world and the West. His debut album, The Dusty Foot Philosopher, left an indelible mark on the hip-hop world and earned him a Juno award for Best Rap Recording. This performance will feature the Washington, DC, premiere of new material from his upcoming album, Troubadour. This concert will take place in the National Geographic Courtyard.”
