You can find more info and a virtual tour here. I think it looks pretty sweet except for the mirrored wall. It was originally listed at $594,900 but is now on the market for $525,000 $499,000 – think that’s reasonable?

After the jump see the house I really wanted to show at 2218 Wyoming Ave for the Wed. porn edition but I couldn’t find any info. It is pretty sick. (more…)

One of the things I have enjoyed the most about writing for this blog is that it’s given me the opportunity to meet some really awesome people, see some very cool things, and discover little pockets of the city that I might not have otherwise. Last week I had the great pleasure of meeting David Snider and Elizabeth Andrews of the Young Playwrights Theater in Columbia Heights.

This is one of those places that you find out about and wish more people knew it existed. It’s a small operation, but they are doing really big things and I am going to do my best to tell you all about it. The basic premise of YPT is to teach students to express themselves clearly and creatively through the art of playwriting. The organization was born with a woman named Karen Zacarias, a successful playwright both regionally and nationally, in 1995. Karen remains active on the board, but the organization now operates under the leadership of David Snider, an actor himself who has many years of experience in the theater business.

David, along with Elizabeth and only two other full time staff members are running a pretty big show themselves, with in-school and after-school programs, a 5 week tour of student work, and a number of special projects and performances. Through the in-school program students in the fourth through twelfth grades at 12 public schools in DC (mostly in wards 1, 7 and 8 ) as well as a couple in Arlington, participate in a 12 week program where every student gets the chance to write their own play. Schools can apply to partner with the program, and once they are selected YPT works with staff to craft the program and incorporate it into the curriculum. Once a week a teacher who is contracted by YPT comes in for a full class period and guides the students towards their goal. The program has been really well received by the schools, the students, and also the community. And some teachers have even revealed that students complete their playwriting assignments at a much higher rate than a lot of other work. Who’d have thought that students would respond well to opportunities for creative expression, huh?! Continues after the jump. (more…)

Your caption in the comments section. Winner gets a PoP t-shirt (if you’ve won in the past you can get one of the new shirts), announced Friday.

This is phenomenal news. I am so psyched to announce that Fresh off the Roast Coffee will be opening up a brick and mortar shop on Georgia Avenue! The exact address can’t be announced yet because it is still undergoing the permitting process but it will be close to the metro. The owner, Joel, expects the store to open as early as mid-December but more likely in January. I’ll obviously keep everyone updated. Above you can find a layout of what the store will look like. I’ll also post pictures as they become available. Finally a proper coffee shop!

Ed. Note: Full disclosure Fresh off the Roast is a PoP advertiser. By the by do you want me to continue to add this disclosure every time I post news about a spot that is a PoP advertiser?

Yeah, I hadn’t actually heard of HPAP either until I received a number of emails about it. From a reader:

“This is a pretty big deal- was only able to buy my condo here in Columbia Heights because of this amazing program. Housing prices locally might finally start to see some of the collapse in the rest of the country if this program disappears. Can you send out a note to people?

Basically, the concept of HPAP program is that if you meet certain low-income requirements, you can get up to $70,000 as a downpayment on a house, which never has any interest, you don’t have to start paying back for 5 years, and then have 40 years to pay back. I know, sounds too good to be true- but it’s not, I personally used the program. And they’re talking about eliminating it. Make them stop!”

You can read more and learn how to sign a petition after the jump.

Update: The Post is reporting that it actually has passed. Their story can be found here.

Update 2: From comments – “This is from Councilmember Barry’s office, regarding the conflicting post article about $50m being approved for HPAP.  It was wrong.  HPAP is indeed still frozen:

The report in the post story is wrong. I plan to reach to them for a correction. The 50 million (which is incorrect too) is for the Housing Production Trust Fund. The 11 million in HPAP funding is frozen per the action the Council the other week.  We exploring ways to restore the funding but nothing concrete has come about yet. The best bet for now is to direct residents to DHCD’s website via dc.gov, updates on the situation will posted there.”

I found this one very striking. It’s located at the construction project on the old Bi-Rite building at 11th and Park.

Also nice stone work plus I’m a huge fan of the condo name – The Mendota. I neither know what it means nor what it is referencing but I know one thing – it’s classy.
