Thanks to Paul from the Arts & Real Estate blog for the heads up.

He writes:

“The Fire House on North Cap that was scheduled to be turned into a restaurant (and XM radio sound stage) is for sale. It looks like it was bought for $600K back in March and is now listing it at $1.5M.”

More info can be found here. The Bloomingdale blog has tons more info.

Wow. I’d say this is pretty bad news. I thought this spot had the making for a great restaurant. But the price of $1.5 million seems insane to me. What are the chances another investor will purchase this spot for a restaurant or an art space?

This home is located at 4600 13th Street, NW:

A reader writes:

“6 bedrooms, three full baths at the corner of 13th and Buchanan St, N.W. in 16th Street Heights for $349,900. This place is gigantic. Looks like lots of work to be done. Maybe too much. The link has lots of pictures and info. Apparently the renovation has already begun.”

The original asking price was $565,250. So for a house this size do you think $349,900 sounds reasonable given the state it’s in?

I hope I’m not overloading you guys with Middle Eastern food options! Skewers is located at 1633 P Street, NW. You can see the menu in pdf format on their Web site. It also says Saturday is Belly Dancing Night. Sweet! So first off – how’s the food and atmosphere? Secondly – how’s the belly dancing?

When it comes to restaurants – how much kitsch is too much? When the inside looks like a cruise ship art gallery? When there’s enough miscellaneous stuff on the walls to rival TGIFridays? At Old Europe in Glover Park (2434 Wisconsin Ave NW), you’re just as saturated with their German theme as the restaurant’s brats are with sauces. Flags of Deutschland’s 16 states, old paintings of the German countryside, and European china hang on the walls; the wait staff is decked out in authentic Bavarian costumes, and – no lie – a little old lady plays traditional music on the piano throughout the week. Old Europe restaurant has been around for 60 years, and serves every German staple imaginable: bratwurst, weisswurst (white hot dog), even zwiebelrostbraten (er, rib steak hot dog).

While the menu is pretty much meat and dumplings, it’s an appetizing assortment. Sausages are cooked through—hearty and not grease-laden. Their Schweineschnitzel, the German version of chicken-fried steak, is pork pounded thin, breaded, fried, and topped with savory sauce. What’s not to like? Imported beer and wines are a must though, if anything to act as a buffer to the carnival of all things Deutsch going on within the dining room. The restaurant’s enjoyably tacky appearance should be experienced at least once by any DC dweller (and Germans are known for being enjoyably tacky). And having consumed a lot of Kassler Rippchen and Rheinischer Sauerbraten and Schwarzwälder Hühnerbrüstchen while I lived in Berlin a while back, I think the food is quite legit. Very hard to pronounce, but legit regardless.

Any fans out there?

So says a reader (in the comments section of yesterday’s rant or revel) who is going to potentially make a lot of folks very, very happy.

“I was just there and the cashier asked me what my zip code was — when I said 20010, she said “Yeah, that’s mine too. It would be nice if we had one of these in our neighborhood, wouldn’t it? That’s what the survey is for.” Which I took to mean that they are thinking about opening up a TJ’s in another part of DC and looking to see where their customer base lives. I don’t know how long they will be surveying customers, but if you want a TJ’s somewhere in POPville, it couldn’t hurt to head on down to Foggy Bottom and tell them where you live! (Sorry if I’m overly excited, but my cats like their cat food and the trek down to Foggy Bottom every other week kind of sucks. Ah, a girl can dream…)”

Would you be stoked to get a Trader Joe’s or will you be sated by an Ellwood Thompson’s coming to the DC USA project on 14th Street?

“Hi There, I was standing in line at Ben’s yesterday and looked across the street to see a new restaurant (next the Ulah Bistro). I can’t remember the name, but I remember thinking it sounded like Indian food. It seemed to have gone up over night. Do you know anything about it?”

I think you’re referring to Indulj which is located at 1208 U St, NW. According to a review on Yelp:

“This place used to be Duke City and has been remodeled. It’s more modern looking now. The food and drinks are good and they have a great live jazz band a few nights week. It’s a few steps from all the rest of the nightlife on U street, so it’s worth checking out.”

Has anyone checked it out?

This is from Noah who “styled a PoP t-shirt in sunny Guatemala City this past week”. Nice.  If anyone is going on an international trip shoot me an email and I’ll hook you up with a t-shirt to be photographed.

This is a good example of the men’s t-shirt for those who haven’t seen the new one’s yet. And here’s a shot of the new women’s t-shirts.
