I think it’s interesting to look at some of the historical pop ups (?) when we judge modern pop ups. I think this row looks super cool. Would the home in the middle be considered a pop up? What do you think of the look of this row? Dang, I can’t remember what street this is but I think it’s in Shaw or Bloomingdale – anyone recognize it?

This home is located at 515 Q Street, NW:

The flier says:

“THIS IS NOT A SHORT SALE! Sets between million dollar properties. 2,666 Sq Ft. This HM has 2 front drs, 2 kitchens & has been separated into 2 units by the owner. Will make for a great liv in invest. property or revert bk to original flr plan & enjoy lots of liv space by simply removing 1 door way. Also has a a sep. liv. quarter that needs renovation. Bk yd is big enough to add on or 4 pking.”

More info and photos found here.

This is a really interesting home as the title suggests, it is basically one home divided into two. I suppose you could combine it back into one home or rent out half. I guess it makes more sense to rent out half, yeah? What do you think of the home itself? Does $449,900 sound reasonable?

Now that the insanity of inauguration is over, I think it’s time for a proper assessment of Ben’s Next Door. I’ll go on the record as saying it is fantastic, both as a bar and a restaurant. They even serve the super cold Heineken drafts (which I think is mostly psychological but I dig the frozen taps). As far as the restaurant is concerned I’ve had a terrific fried chicken entree. You can see all the entrees here. Of course they also serve the classic fare that you can get at the original Ben’s. I refuse to write the address of Ben’s next door, you know where it is! So now that that lines have died down a bit, what do you think of Ben’s Next Door? Notice they painted the building as well. Looking good!

Ed. Note: Ben’s Next Door is located at 1211 U Street, NW. Damn…

“Dear PoP,

I’ve been living in the city for 5 years and have yet to find a place to get decent tomato pie (i’m not talking vegan here, just sans the cheese!)

Maybe this phenomenon only exists in the greater Philadelphia area (i’m a native)…. but I’m hoping not. Please help!”

Well we’ve definitely spoken about pizza a lot here at PoP. We’ve even spoken about the the worst pizza in town. And of course people have voiced their pizza preferences here, here, here, here, here, here and even here among other places, yikes we talk about pizza a lot! Well, I can’t recall anyone mentioning a cheesless tomato pie. Does it exist in DC? I’m betting you could probably order one special but is anyone familiar with this Philly style pizza?

Thanks to a reader for telling me about a new Italian Pizza place opening up at 1110 U Street, NW. Has anyone heard of the Italian Pizza Kitchen? Is it a chain? You think it’s a good addition to that section of U Street?

While I was in the neighborhood I also noticed that the restaurant above Bohemian Caverns (11th and U) got a paint job and might even be a new restaurant. (Sorry for the cell phone pics – see I don’t always have my camera on me!)

It’s called Hominy Restaurant & Lounge:

Their Web site says:

Hominy Restaurant & Lounge is a unique Southern Casual Restaurant in an 1800 Historic building of the Bohemian Caverns in the Heart of the “U” Street Corridor. Chef Howsoon H.O. Cham is at his best at Hominy Restaurant and delivers an impressive new Southern inspired masterpieces. The recently remodeled Space is cozy yet elegant with splashes of bright colors against sophisticated velvet walls with Faux finishes, large glass windows and dark oakwood flooring.

Our atmosphere is casual yet elegant. Enjoy our warm dining room by daylight or candlelight. Only one block from the “U” Street Cardoza Metro Stop, you will find Hominy Restaurant along the vibrant “U” Street Corridor. Whether in the mood for awesome drinks or a wonderful dinner, Chef Chams’ versatile menu of delightful menu items will satisfy.

The name Hominy refers to kernels of corn that have been soaked in a caustic solution and washed to remove the hulls. Our mission is to provide a friendly and professional service of exquisite food, wine, and cocktails to the satisfaction of every guest. Let hominy Restaurant be your favorite neighborhood Restaurant.

Sound good?

And finally Solly’s (Southwest corner of 11th and U) got a new fence for it’s outdoor patio so you can only access it from inside:

I was stunned to learn of its purpose. So free PoP t-shirt to the first person who names the street this is on and the function of the building.

As we’ve seen in the past, sadly car fires (intentional or not) happen from time to time. The reader who sent me the photos writes:

“Found this waiting for me when I arrived at home this evening in the parking lot behind the Safeway in the 3800 block of Georgia Ave. I have no idea what happened, but whatever it was, it happened either today or yesterday. You’d certainly like to think this was some kind of accident, but you have to think someone was getting rid of a stolen car.”

What do you guys think – was the car stolen? Perhaps I am a bit naive but why do people torch stolen cars, to get rid of any evidence?

More photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

My dog Peat snuck under my fence this evening and escaped. I haven’t received a call about him. His name is Peat. If he is not wearing a collar people can email me at [email protected]. I’ve attached his picture (he normally looks much happier). Oh yeah, and he is shaved, so the only long hair is on his head and tail.

He was last seen at 13th and Taylor NW. He is a bit of a wanderer – prone to climbing fences. This time it looks like he dug himself out. He has been found as far north as Military several years ago. I called animal control and he no one has called in no him.”

Please email [email protected] if anyone spots Peat.

I found this flag to be very odd. It was great, after I was staring at it for like 5 minutes, some other folks on the block also started staring at it.  They were super nice and told me “it’s Nashville, it’s Nashville”.
