Here is another cool example from Brookland (Kearny Street, NE). I took a few shots but it was somewhat obscured by a tree. It certainly is a very different style from the other homes I saw in that area. The windows are wild. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

A few more photos after the jump (including a surprise for ‘not telling’). (more…)

This condo is located at 1502 13th Street, NW:

The flier says:

“This boutique 8-unit property was recently renovated just 4 years ago. Bright 2BR, 1.5BA condo residence, featuring wood-burning fireplace, bamboo floors, kitchen has Gran Counters & SS, recessed lighting t/o, private patio, w/ d in unit, & extra storage. Close to Whole Foods Corridor & 2(Red & Green) Metros”

More info here and a virtual tour here.

I’ve always loved this house/building so I’m glad to get to see what one of the condos looks like. I’d be more interested in one on a higher floor but this one looks pretty good too. Hard to get a feel of the size from these photos though. What do you think of the condo itself? Does $434,900 sound reasonable?

OjO Latino is a new feature by Néstor Sánchez Cordero. You have seen his photos featured in “Photos from PoPville”. I was so taken by his images that I asked if he’d mind doing a weekly feature. And OjO Latino (Latin Eye) is born. This week’s theme captures some dope DC skies and statues. Néstor says, “Images are around, the secret is to catch them at the right moment and with the right light…”

Wow. Holy cow. This place was unbelievable. I can’t believe I’ve lived in DC for 12 years and have just learned about it. This of course is the Franciscan Monastery located at 1400 Quincy Street, NE. Their brochure says:

“On a wooded hillside in Northeast Washington, The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land rises in solitary grandeur. The Monastery and its shrines, constructed over a century ago, are religious centers for tourists and pilgrims of all faiths. Offering a chance to see replicas of the famous Holy Land Shrines… The Gardens and Shrines. An oasis of serenity…the acres of gardens change with every season…” You can read more about the architecture here.

So as you can tell already I was stunned by the beauty of this place. The gardens and the Monastery itself were sensational. There are daily tours at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and on Sunday at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Personally I was most happy in the amazing gardens where you can’t even hear a car go by. Amazing. But of course the photos will do more justice than anything I can write.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I would love to see what ideas your readers generate on how these funds could be well-used to help our community.

David Tumblin

Commissioner, Single Member District 4C06″

District Receives $16.4 Million in Community Services Block Grant Funds From Recovery Act

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced April 10, 2009 plans to make $1 billion available for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the new resources will be allocated to states across the country. The District will receive $16,427,550 that will be distributed to community groups that help Americans through tough economic times.

Under the Recovery Act, organizations receiving CSBG funding must use the resources to help get our economy back on track. Funds must be used to reduce poverty, revitalize low-income communities, and assist low-income families to become self-sufficient. Eligible entities use funds to provide services and activities addressing employment, education, housing, nutrition, and emergency services to combat the central causes of poverty.

Services currently provided by community organizations that receive CSBG funds include:

  • Job training and placement assistance.
  • Financial literacy programs such as credit counseling.
  • Housing assistance programs that help keep Americans in their homes.
  • Nutrition programs that provide meals for vulnerable families.
  • Community agencies that bring public and private resources together to assist families in need.

The United Planning Organization, which is the District’s federally-recognized community action agency, is responsible for determining how these funds are distributed. Interested parties should contact Harvey Johnson, III, UPO’s Director of Public Awareness, for more information. He can be reached at (202) 238-4696 or by email at [email protected] or [email protected].

Any ideas?

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any idea what was going on at the U St. metro station Sunday afternoon? My wife and I walked by at about… I’m guessing… 7:00. And both entrances of the station were closed off with police tape, numerous officers, etc. As we were walking the block btwn. 12th and 13th, a police canine unit showed up and the dog and handler jumped out and the dog started sniffing around for who knows what. It was quite a scene. Any ideas?”

I hadn’t heard anything. Did anyone else see/hear what happened?

Also a reader writes about some action in North Country:

“At 7:20 this morning (Thursday), ten FBI agents in bulletproof vests entered a house on 5th St between Gallatin and Hamilton. I watched them approach the house, where they fanned out and took up positions. When I drove by, they were talking with someone standing outside in a suit. Not sure if it’s connected to the events of the past week on 7th St (which is only one block away, btw)”
