“We are closing our store. Thank you for your support over the years.”
Very sad news as the owners were super nice folks.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the property that has been forever boarded up at 13th and W was finally under contract. Well, now it has sold and there’s lots of work going on inside. I asked the workers if it was going to become a bodega or some other retail. Nope, it’s going to become a single family home. I’m just glad it’s not going to be a boarded up eyesore any longer.

“Dear PoP,
A question for you – if i were playing sports in Rock Creek after sunset, would someone actually kick me out? I grew up in NY where, post-Guiliani, they go around and actually make you leave Central Park after dark. Rock Creek is technically only open during daylight hours but if there’s a big group of us running around at night, do you think anyone would actually do something about it?”
Hmm, that’s a good question. I know there is a contingent of Park police that patrols the grounds but my guess is they’re probably not too likely to kick you out. Anyone know from experience?

“Manuel is one of the many soccer (football) players who meet each weekend at Clark School. He is also part of the clean-up crew picking up the trash after games, or like today, early in the morning. Here’s a big thanks to Manuel and his friends – for making Clark School lively and also keeping it clean.”
Very cool.

This home is located at 4508 15th Street, NW:
Sadly, there is no flier summary but it is a 3 bed 3.5 bath row house renovated in 2004. It says it has two decks and a master suite with 22ft cathedral ceilings.
You can find more info and photos here. It’s in a slightly different format here on Zillow.
The photos do look quite nice. The flier I picked up says it is for sale for $649,000. Interestingly the “Zestimate” is $614,500. I’m not sure if it sold or they took it off the market (I picked up the flier just this past weekend) but let’s assume it’s for sale for $649,000. Does that sound reasonable?

Fogo de Chao is located at 1101 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Here’s another place that I hear people raving about it. I know it’s a Brazilian steakhouse, with many locations, and that you can do an all you can eat deal. So is the steak that good or is it the all you can eat deal that people love so much?
This post was written by PoP contributor Hipchickindc and is the fifth installment in a slowly moving saga of a full house renovation aka “The Adventures of Mark and Charles”. Previous posts can be found by clicking: Episode 1 and Episode 2 and Episode 3 and Episode 4.
I have to admit that I’ve been totally lame in keeping up with Mark and Charles’ adventures in house renovation. As I mentioned in the last post, once the permits were in place, much progress was made in a short period of time.
One of the selling points of the house, despite its completely raw state when we first saw it, was the view from the attic. The attic of the original house was toward the front of the house, with standing room mostly under the turret. In addition to the turret being opened up (see pic), the back of the room will be glass to reveal the amazing city and monument views. There will even be (what I can’t help but call the Cialis) bathtub, that allows one to soak and take in the U.S. Capitol at the same time.

Years ago, back in DC after living in London for a period of time, I was heading downtown late one morning by Metro. Already a little unnerved by the sterile quiet, compared to the slightly seamy vitality of the London Underground, I overheard two young suit-and-tie guys talking. About their commute. Something like, “Yeah, after morning rush hour I can take this or that road and shave X minutes off the drive, plus the parking garage is cheaper after 10am…”, with the other guy nodding intently and sharing his own strategies.
I thought – as any self-respecting early 20s aspiring rock musician would – could anything be more boring, more indicative of a decline into numbing soulessness than having nothing else to talk about than your commute?
But especially in Washington, where work life and home life are so neatly segregated, the morning and evening commute becomes a third ‘place’, a sizable chunk of the week for most people. Why sacrifice such time, simply passing from point A to B? Many turn inward, swathed in an iPod cocoon for the duration. But what about the life and landscape and backstories that surround us as we trundle along in our stoic self-containment? Continues after the jump. (more…)

We will be partnering with NCHCA to clean parts of Columbia Heights this month (Mt. Pleasant in June). Meet at Columbia Heights Coffee (11th between Park and Monroe) at 10am. Let’s represent!

“Dear PoP,
I noticed on my way home from work last night that Mar De Plata on 14th street (a restaurant you recently featured on your site.) appears to be gone. Any idea if it’s permanently closed, under renovation, moved to a new location?”
Yes, the location at 1410 14th Street, NW has closed but they are now open at 1827 Jefferson Place, NW. (Very close to Trattu) The new spot looks pretty good – see photo below.
