“Dear PoP,

I walked by the new turf field yesterday and was wondering if the facility will ever be open to the public. I took a jaunt around the perimeter and all the entrances were padlocked. There were some neighborhood guys, playing touch football. While most of the fence is pointed, the fence could certainly be hopped pretty easily right by the turnstiles. Do you have any information on this? I would love to partake in some pickup soccer there.”

Thanks to Joeon11th for sharing the rules. The field is located off 11th Street between Irving and Kenyon.

Back in June it was leaked to me that the Bike Musician sculpture had been selected for the Adams Morgan plaza at Columbia Road and 18th. At that time the Deirdre Thayer Ehlen, DC Creates Public Art Coordinator, denied that a sculpture had been selected. Well, now Greater Greater Washington confirms that the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities has indeed selected the Bike Musician. You can see what the other options were here. It’s funny, at the time, I disliked the Bike Musician. But to tell you the truth it has sorta grown on me. I guess it’s a bit hard to envision what it’ll look like life size. But I think a bit of quirkiness may turn out alright.

UPDATE:  Allright, lemons into lemonade as they say.  So what the hell is the purpose of the DC Commission on the Arts?  I mean if they vote on a project and then table it (see comments), what’s the point?  If the Vietnam Memorial selection operated this way, I doubt it ever would’ve been built.  Obviously this doesn’t hold the gravitas of the Vietnam Memorial, but tell me what is the point of the Arts Commission?  Should it still exist as is?  Should it be an elected position?  What should the public/community role be in selecting a neighborhood art project like this?

Back in the end of August, we had a lengthy discussion as to whether someone should testify in front of a grand jury. Here’s the update:

“Well, I decided to testify for the Grand Jury. Wasn’t so bad and best of all, they probably won’t indict for 2-3 months and then not go to trial for another 2-3 months after that (barring a plea deal). While I think some of the responses were cavalier, it helped me think the whole thing through.

By the way, there is a new Neighborhood Watch program I joined that’s starting up in Columbia Heights in need of Block Captains if people want to help take a bite out of crime (and cavalier posters want to put their $ where their mouth is).

The program is expanding throughout the city and if there’s interest it can spread to any neighborhood!”

There were a bunch of random barrels inside the old O Street Market off 7th Street, NW. God knows why they’re there. Any ideas?

This is from Jess, 25, who got it done at Jinx Proof in Georgetown. It’s a peacock feather and I think it came out very cool looking.

This headless/torso-less child just creeped the hell out of me. I don’t even know if something was planted in here if it would be any less creepy…

I liked the eye on the metal slab here. Not sure if you can tell but the inside is a shell and drops straight down, you can sorta see at the bottom of the photo.

I’ll give you three guesses to guess which neighborhood this house is from. It also has a best spot for a morning cup of coffee or mojito. And oddly/happily it had tons of bull sculptures. You can see one peeking out in the above photo. Close ups after the jump. (more…)
