More info and photos found here.

I think the pictures are looking pretty sweet. Also these pine floors rock. I have no idea how much this should go for so I’m curious what those in the know think. There was a decent price reduction from $445,000 to $399,900. Is that reasonable for this 2 bed/2 bath?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I

“Dear PoP,

My husband noticed that there was a crew doing work inside the Ellwood Thompsons space at DCUSA this morning. Do you have any inside info? Is the project back on for them?”

I’ve been getting lots of emails about this. Consider the following strictly scuttlebutt. So, the official line is that nothing has changed. The unofficial line is that there is definitely progress. I’m sorry I can’t give details and this certainly isn’t a done deal but know that negotiations are definitely moving forward. I’ll be sure to update with an official word as soon as that becomes possible.

And how the heck did I not hear about this new bar on H Street, NE until now!?!? 1104 H Street, NE is home to H Street’s newest bar. There is no sign out front but you can’t miss it. It is very close to Taylor’s Deli. I’m told it has a sweet patio and is owned by the same folks behind the nearby Jimmy Valentine’s. It is called Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar. Anyone check it out yet?

Ed. Note: As one man operation here at PoP I wear many hats. In addition to intern coordinator I also act as the ombudsman. From time to time I find it necessary to respond to a reader’s complaint. You can see previous ombudsman responses here.

The last few weeks I have received the following type of comment:

“Thanks again for posting who are your sponsors. It helps us understand your blog so much more.”

To be honest I’m not exactly sure what are the implication of these comments. But I suspect they imply that the advertisers influence the content on this blog. Well, I just want to clear up that misunderstanding right away. After lengthy negotiations, I have been given permission to reveal the true power brokers behind this blog. And they are, of course, the Pentavirate.

For those that are not familiar with the Pentavirate, there was a great documentary done on this subject which explains the group:

“There’s a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate (The Queen, The Vatican, The Gettys, The Rothschilds, *and* Colonel Sanders) who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.”

It turns out that my many postings about flowers and gardens did not go unnoticed by the Pentavirate. I’m not going to get into the details of how they contacted me but suffice it say I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse. It seems the group was interested in recouping their losses from “Tulip Mania”. Many folks may remember this lucrative market from the 1630s.

Wikipedia explains:

“Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. At the peak of tulip mania in February 1637, tulip contracts sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.”

So if you want to support this blog please plant tulips in your garden next year!

Back in March, the scuttlebutt for this location included a Dunkin Donuts or sushi restaurant. I spoke with a worker who said the spot will become a bike rental shop opening late this week or next week. I have to admit I’m a little surprised. Given the city’s smartbike program renting bikes I’d think that’d be a tough business to compete against. (Particularly because there is a smartbike rack a few streets down at 14th and U.)

Do you think a bike rental shop in this location will thrive?

Ed. Note: At the time I posted about Mid City Caffe’s opening this past weekend, I also mentioned that the YES! Organic Market will be opening Monday with a ribbon cutting. Council Member Bowser’s office says that YES will now open still open on Monday Wed. at 10am but the ribbon cutting has been pushed to the 24th.

“Dear PoP,

I stopped by Mid City Caffe (1626 14th Street, NW) this morning for a latte on my way to U Street for brunch. It’s a very cute, very low key little place and the traffic was steady but not overwhelming. The espresso was quality and I’m looking forward to the chocolate croissant I took to go. There are plenty of seats inside, but folks who want to park at a table and quietly take in the Internets on their MacBooks should have their iPods charged; it’s just the tiniest bit noisy when as people come and go.

All in all, though, it’s a comfort to have this little gem around the corner.”

I too stopped by this weekend and the place really does look great. See some more photos of the inside after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

As I was walking to the CH metro this morning along 14th Street, I noticed that a huge construction effort had begun on the road in front of Target…I’m not talking about the plaza/fountain that they’ve been building, but it looks like new work. Didn’t they just tear up that road recently? What on earth could they be doing now? It’s SO annoying to be honest. Traffic is just going to get worse, and the area is just AWFUL looking and LOUD. They should have fixed the roads (or whatever is within), BEFORE putting in this shopping district. As a resident of the area, all the construction simply sucks. ughhh.”

The plans for 14th Street reconstruction has been in the works for quite a while. It probably wouldn’t have been possible to fix them before the shopping center went in because all the construction trucks would’ve torn up the road. I forget what the time frame is for this section of 14th Street but at least Park Road is nearly finished…

You can see more about the Columbia Heights Streetscape plans here.

This one on 12th Street, NW was absolutely mesmerizing.

Holy peach tree. This had dozens of peaches. The owners are so lucky.

I’ve walked by this shell in Shaw dozens of times and I never noticed the painting on this door. This is the famous shell that has the fake cafe.
