We learned a couple of weeks ago that Ward 4 received a new acting police commander. I had the great pleasure of sitting down with the acting commander, Inspector Linda Brown.

About Inspector Brown

Inspector Brown is 42 years old but could easily pass for 24 years old. But make no mistake she is no nonsense and receives the utmost respect from her officers. I was pleasantly surprised to see how down to earth she was. She did not spin any of her answers. I admired her direct responses to all of my questions. Originally from Memphis, TN Inspector Brown currently lives in Clinton, MD. She has been on the force for 19 years and has had previous experience in the 4th District where she served as a Patrol Sergeant for 2 years. She describes those years as the best years of her 19 year career. She does not know how long her tenure will be as acting commander of the 4th district but while she is serving in this capacity she will serve the residents of Ward 4 and aims to “keep them as safe as they possibly can be.” (more…)

“what does it mean to live in a city (country, world-pick one) which televises -or chooses to televise the funeral of a football player? a man whose tragic ( and, alas, most american of deaths) demise is-yes-tragic-but somehow more important than-oh-the metaphorical sean taylors around us (the delontes and rashawns who die at the hand of the
gun every day… ) we got more cold cases than the corner liquor store…. few four day closure rates when someone who didn’t entertain us dies…don’t get me wrong… full disclosure time. i love football. (not the dc team with the nasty name-but i do). and as a black man, i am so tired of the self inflicted mayhem we put on each other (sorry, juan
williams-but i don’t think black people have become different races) so yeah-im sorry that the earth opens again and swallows another young person… but something is troubling me-and it isn’t just the sight of those suburban fans(-many of whom distinguish between the “good ones”and “bad ones”-you know, black people) cheering for no 21 before
heading back to woodbridge or somewhere like that… why do we (consciously or not) value those people deemed “somebody” (versace, princess di-jfk junior-oh my) more than we cherish theheartbeat next door?  something is wrong with us-and i don’t think a double skim latte will fix it .. but you know me.. im that weird kid who sat in the back of
the class and contributed “odd” facts to discussions about, say, the history of Pennsylvania… im just saying…”

Located on 13th Street just south of U Street. And this one’s for sale. I wonder how much they are asking, it looks awesome from the outside…

I was wondering what this place was. I was most taken by the sign that says “eat responsibly”. That seems like a funny selling point to me. But anyway I was glad to see a post in Counter Intelligence describing the new restaurant in detail. She explains that Chix is “an organic, environmentally conscious rotisserie chicken eat-in and take out place owned by Lukas Umana and Victoria Garcia. Stock is made on site daily, the rice is organic, the chicken comes from their rotisserie, and it’s garnished with onions and cilantro.”

So has anyone checked it out yet?

I’m afraid I have to report that the much hyped sold out M.I.A. show at the 9:30 club last Thursday was a serious disappointment. Her new album is absolutely fantastic. But I can tell you that the opening act, Cool Kids, were far superior to M.I.A. Cool Kids were set up just like Run DMC with two rappers and a DJ on the turn tables in the back. They sang a song called We are the Black Beastie Boys (or something like that) that was unbelievable. They rapped over old school Beastie Boys songs spun by the DJ. There was a real electricity. But M.I.A. seemed like a parody of herself. There was a huge screen in the background which was rather distracting rather than inspiring. Now, I’ve been to some ferocious 9:30 club shows where the artist feeds off the energy of the audience. I’m thinking of some Drive By Truckers, Thievery Corporation and Wilco shows I went to at 9:30. Do you know what tips you off to a good show? It is when not only is the floor dancing and singing like crazy but also when those on the balcony are equally as enthusiastic. I can tell you at the M.I.A. show there was a very tepid response from the balcony (I was on the floor looking up at those up top). There were a few enthusiastic souls but for the most part those up top seemed to be politely listening. And that my friends does not make for a ferocious concert. So in sum, M.I.A. on an ipod or stereo is fantastic but no need to spend 100 bucks on craigs list to go to a show. Additionally, if you like the Beastie Boys go out immediately and purchase a Cool Kids album!

I know we’ve sort of covered this before but I’m wondering what the threshold is for deciding on installing bars on your windows? (Ed. note: I’m not talking about basement window bars I’m talking about first floor window bars and God forbid second floor window bars.) I figure if all the houses on the block have bars then you should probably get bars too? But what if only a few houses have bars, then do you get them also? I mean many of the homes in Dupont Circle used to have bars but they don’t have them anymore? So what is the threshold for taking the bars off? You get what I’m saying right?

Check out the flower sculptures on the roofs of these homes? Is it purely decorative or is it functional like a lightning rod?
