Behold the gargoyle gecko. I wish I could take credit for that name but my friend’s girlfriend came up with it. It is super freaky though. Kind of looks like a cat bred with lizard of some sort with some demon ancestry mixed in there as well. So who knows their mythology? What is this? Whatever it is, it has haunted me since mid day Saturday…

So I walked by this tree with some odd hanging fruits that I realized upon closer inspection were pomegranates! Wild. Isn’t that like a Mediterranean fruit? I guess maybe DC is just far south enough for trees like this. Has anyone seen a lemon tree in DC? Or an orange tree? Wait, do oranges grow on trees or bushes? Holy cow, I don’t know where oranges come from…

And some pretty nice stonework as well. Do yo call that stonework? Does that craftsmanship have a proper name I’m not familiar with? Whatever it’s called, it’s pretty sweet.

It is always so great to meet the folks behind the names. It was truly a pleasure to meet you. Enjoy your shirts! And thanks to the folks at Red Derby for being such gracious hosts. For those who missed this one the next one will be in the Spring when we can enjoy the warm weather.

Following is a phenomenal email I received:

Hi PoP,

I have a funny story to share. I live in a row house in northern Columbia Heights. Today as I was coming home, I noticed a package on my doorstep, the usual place for UPS or the mail delivery people to leave packages. It was a standard 10″ x 14″ padded manila envelope, the kind with a red pull tab for ease of opening. When I picked it up, I noticed that the tab had already been pulled & the package was wide open. Upon further inspection, it was a pair of books I had ordered, entitled “Thief in the Night.” The package was correctly addressed to my name and street address. Someone had opened my mail! I can just picture a would-be thief opening the package, seeing the book title, thinking it was a sign from God, returning the package to my doorstep, and proceeding directly to the nearest confessional, swearing to never steal again!

Thanks to Lindsay for alerting me to the new 911 policy mandating all police calls go to 911 instead of non emergency calls to 311. Now, as I’ve mentioned before I’ve been hit in the head on more than one occasion and I’ve killed many a brain cell through my own behavior, but why on earth would you combine non emergency calls with emergency calls? I’m sure there is a proper answer here, I just can’t imagine it. I mean will they double they amount of operators answering 911 calls now? Also, before when I called 911 I knew my call would be taken with the utmost seriousness but now if we have dozens of people calling 911 because there neighbor is playing the stereo too loud – won’t 911 be cheapened. Do you know what I’m saying? Someone explain the merits to me, please. Anyway, here is the email from the listserv Lindsay found:

POLICE RELATED CALLS MUST BE CALLED INTO 911…311 will now be used for
the Mayors Customer Service Requests

911 – all police related matters – emergency and non emergency, need of
ambulance, fires

311- all other governmental agency requests/city services – cars towed,
streetlights replaced, streets repaired, animal issues, abandoned
vehicles, trees trimmed, trash pick ups, etc..

I know you have probably walked by this storefront dozens of times just north of the Reeves Center on 14th Street, but have you ever stopped to look at the posters/pictures? They are phenomenal. Check out my favorite one after the jump. (more…)

This is Lincoln Congregational located at 11th and R St, NW. Nice architecture, nice details, this one has it all. If I wouldn’t burn upon entry I’d love to check out the inside.
