“This isn’t the best shot — it’s from the world music fest last summer in the park near the Iwo Jima memorial (sax player from the Skatalites) — but it’s one of my favorite views of the Mall from this side of the river.”

So I don’t know how I got on this topic with my cab driver, considering the condition I was in, but he had some interesting thoughts on the crime cameras around town. He described the situation like this to me: “It is like going to the doctor before you are sick for advice, and all the doctor says is – Don’t worry I have plenty of medicine, come back when you are sick and I’ll give you medicine.” Or something along those lines. It is an interesting point. I do believe the cameras are good but I wish we’d hear a little more about some of the preventative measures that are being taken to compliment the camera usage. To me it seems like they can’t be considered a panacea but should only be one part of a greater preventative plan. What do you guys think about these cameras? Are they useful or a simply a psychological salve?
According to commenter Alaaro over at the Columbia Heights News Forum a Papa John’s is coming to 1417 Otis. Obviously no replacement for our great eating out options but for take out, man I love that garlic dipping sauce!
And according to the Express a Beer Paradise is Coming to Logan Circle in April. Apparently the unnamed place will be located on 14th St. near Rhode Island Ave.
And according to some folks who attended the Safeway meeting last night, the Georgia Ave. Safeway in Petworth will become a 60,000 sf “lifestyle” store with approx 200 residential units on top, designed by Torti Gallas.

Knights are cool in certain circles, I can respect that, if not necessarily for myself. But pigs? I guess it is kind of beautiful thing. Screw all this damn conformity. If folks want to put pig sculptures in front of their house, then God bless ’em. Like the Knights though, I also would’ve loved to have heard this conversation between the husband and wife…oh never mind. Check out a closeup of the pig in full glory after the jump. (more…)

This house/mansion is truly amazing. You can easily imagine what it looked like in its former glory. And I’m sure with a million bucks or so it could be restored to its previous glory. It is located on the corner of 18th and Monroe, NW. So for my real estate sleuths – what is the asking price of this mansion. Check out a close up of a sweet window after the jump. (more…)

By John Deere of course. Reminds me of my summers in the Quad Cities…

And a sweet bonus wall sculpture to boot.

I always marvel at the fact that there are grand houses like this in the heart of DC. This is from the Eckington LeDroit Park neighborhood I believe, or maybe it’s Shaw I don’t know the boundaries that well down there. Killer house though, that I know.
