Street Closures for AIDS Walk, Howard University’s Yard fest and Homecoming Parade, and the Marine Corps Marathon

The Metropolitan Police Department wishes to advise the media and public of several scheduled events occurring this weekend including the 2013 AIDS Walk, the Howard University Homecoming Parade, and the Marine Corps Marathon. In conjunction with these events, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration

AIDS WALK

This event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013. The staging area will be on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 13th Street to 14th Street, NW. The following streets will be closed from 7:00 pm on Friday, October 25th until 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 26th 2013:

14th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
13th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
13-1/2th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Ave, NW

Race Route

The race start time will be from 8:30 am to 11:00 am at which time the roadways mentioned below will be closed to traffic:

Route will begin and end at 12th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
East on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW towards 3rd Street, NW
South on 3rd Street, NW to D Street, SW
West on D Street, SW to 4th Street, SW
North on 4th Street, SW to Independence Avenue, SW
West on Independence Avenue, SW to 7th Street, SW (turn around)
East on Independence Avenue, SW to 3rd Street, SW
North on 3rd Street, SW to Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
West on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW to the finish line

HOWARD UNIVERSITY HOMECOMING PARADE

This event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013. The staging area time will be at 7:00 am in front of the Johnson Administration Building (2400 6th Street, NW) on the Howard University campus.

The parade start time will be at 10:00 am until approximately 12:30 pm at which time the roadways mentioned below will re-open to traffic:

North on 6th Street, NW to Fairmont Street, NW
West on Fairmont Street, NW to Georgia Avenue, NW
South on Georgia Avenue, NW to Florida Avenue, NW
Southeast on Florida Avenue, NW to 5th Street, NW
North on 5th Street, NW to T Street, NW
East on T Street, NW to Anna Cooper Circle, NW
Southeast around the circle to 3rd Street, NW
North on 3rd Street, NW to Elm Street, NW
East on Elm Street, NW to 2nd Street, NW
North on 2nd Street, NW to Bryant Street, NW
West on Bryant Street, NW to 4th Street, NW
North on 4th Street, NW to the Valley (between College Street, NW and Howard Place, NW where parade will disband)

MARINE CORPS MARATHON

This event is scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2013. The race begins at 8:00 am in Arlington, Virginia, and then crosses the Potomac River into the District of Columbia. The following streets along the race route will be closed beginning at 6:50 am and are expected to reopen by 1:30 pm:

HOV lanes – from 14th Street, SW to HOV ramp at South Eads Street, NW

**West bound M Street will remain open up to Wisconsin Ave NW. Motorists will be forced to turn north on Wisconsin Avenue NW from M Street NW or east from Wisconsin Avenue NW to M Street NW. West bound M Street NW will remain open unless otherwise determined.

A course map as well as additional information regarding street closures in Arlington County is posted at www.marinemarathon.com. Police will reopen the roadways as soon as possible, provided doing so does not interfere with the race. Metrorail will begin service at 5:00 am on Sunday, October 27, 2013. Due to traffic delays, race participants and spectators are encouraged to use public transportation.
